It is generally best to consider a variety of issues and perspectives. A planning process should reflect each community’s equity concerns and priorities so public involvement is important for transport equity planning. The objective of this study is to determine the Transit Equity in the City of Manila by income class and accessibility. Accessibility in this study refers to the ability of an individual to reach his desired services and activities. Accessibility is measured in terms of number of transfers made by the respondent, time travel and monetary value of the travel and then correlated to the income class. The desired services and activities can only be located in the city and they are the Hospital, Mall, Supermarket, City Hall, Park, Church, School and Work Place. The respondents are requested to answer a questionnaire to determine the transit equity in the city. There are no significant disparities in the affordability, transport network connectivity, geographic distribution of activities and ability to reach the desired services and activities of the Hospital, Mall, Supermarket, City Hall, Park and Church. A significant number of respondents, whose monthly income is less than P20000.00, take three to four kinds of public transportation system, travel longer and pay higher to reach their school and work place respectively.

For historian Ambeth Ocampo, old names of the streets of Manila , “in one way reaffirmed and enhanced our culture.” Former names of some streets in Binondo were mentioned by Jose Rizal in his novels. Calle Sacristia (now Ongpin street ) was the street where Rizal’s leading character Crisostomo Ibarra walked the old Tiniente back to his barracks. The house of rich Indio Don Capitan Tiago de los Santos was located in Calle Anloague (now Juan Luna). Only a century ago, the surrounding blocks of Malate and Ermita were traverse only by Calle Real (now M.H. del Pilar Street ) and Calle Nueva (now A Mabini Street ) that followed the curve of the Bay and led to Cavite ’s port. Today’s Roxas Boulevard was underwater then. Along the two main roads were houses and rice fields punctuated by the churches of Malate and Ermita and the military installations like Plaza Militar and Fort San Antonio Abad. After the Filipino­American War, new streets were laid out following the Burnham Plan. In Malate for instance, streets were named after the US states that sent volunteers to crush Aguinaldo’s army. Today, those streets were renamed after Filipinos patriots some became key players in Aguinaldo’s government. It is fascinating to learn that Manila ’s rich heritage is reflected in its streets. Below is a list of current street names and the little history behind it: Andres Soriano Avenue in Intramuros was formerly called theAduana, after the Spanish custom house whose ruins stand on the street.

    The Urbanization of Metropolitan Manila* Mary R. Holinsteiner The Development of Metropolitan Manila as Primate City Miguel Lopez de Legazpi had dreamt of a capital b pasting abundant resources and a setting worthy of the King. Panay had been kind to him, but its resources were limited. Besides, there were persistent glowing reports of a well-situated seaport to the north, a place called Maynila. When his second-in-command, Martin de Goiti, confirmed those reports, he made up his mind; he transferred north and on June 24, 1571, the charter of the City of Manila was signed. Cebu may enjoy the distinction of being the Philippines' first permanent Spanish settlement; but Manila was the first real Philippine city. And if Philippine urbanization began with Manila, even today its symbol remains this great metropolis. From a population of 000 in the indigenous baranga) settlement at Spanish contact, Manila and its environs now harbor an estimat- ed 3,600,000 people. My intention here is to focus on this huge clustering of mankind: its history, its contemporary characteristics and trends, its significance to Philippine society as a whole and to the people who dwellwithin its boundaries, and finally its needs in the years to come. For though urbanization in the Philippines encompasses more cities than just Manila, the dominant position occupied by this great city merits a closer look. Its being the city of my birth may also have something to do with my partiality. To paraphrase Kluckhohn and Murray (1957: 65), Metropolitan Manila is like all other cities, like some other cities, like no other city.
