In one of those odd twists of fate, Dr. Rachel Christofides has been there from the beginning, from when I first embarked on a postgraduate course based at Rolle. Pregnancy with my second son would put paid to that attempt, but Rachel would join my supervisory team in the latter stages of this one, and her help last summer kept me afloat. I cannot thank the wonderful women of my supervisory team enough. It was Dr. Kathryn Gray who first heard my proposal, and who has steered me kindly, humorously but with rigour to the finishing line. Without Dr. Bonnie Latimer, I’m not sure I would ever have quite found my way to this extraordinary period and Montagu’s Turkish Embassy Letters. Thanks must go, too, to Professor Angela Smith, whose friendship I have enjoyed since our boys went to nursery together, and whose no-nonsense support has guaranteed that there’d be no turning back. Women and friendship are constants that have helped to see this project to fruition, and a big load of love goes to Chelvi and Vicki. During many a café visit, they have listened to my convoluted outpourings and convinced me that I have something to say. Without the support of my dear friend and Head of Faculty, Dee, who ensured that my timetable would accommodate the ResM, I could not practically have undertaken the degree. My lovely colleagues in ELB have listened and encouraged, even when I’m sure they would rather not have their busy brains assailed with tales from the Eighteenth Century! 3 The greatest thanks go, of course, to my two beautiful boys, Joe and Luke. During the time that I have been working on this thesis, Joe has graduated with a first-class degree and is now himself doing a Masters. He has been my study-buddy and an irrepressible retriever of obscure sources! Luke, too, has finished GCSEs and A’ Levels, and will soon leave for uni himself. Both have tolerated having a mother umbilically-attached to her laptop, and I’m looking forward to being back in their lives. Finally, in a ‘female spirit of contradiction’ of my own, I reject Adrian’s assertions that there is nothing to acknowledge him for. Him I thank for his unwavering love and support, for undertaking solo dog-walks and far more than his fair share of housework, and for enduring lonely weekends. While this dissertation maintains a primary engagement with gender, it evaluates the text’s participation in myriad discourses and genres of the Restoration and early Augustan period. The cultural conditions that saw a significant growth in female participation in the world of print and, thereby, in intellectual exchange with men - often in writings loosely operating within a ‘Republic of Letters’ - act as the shaping context for my analysis of her construction of agency and authority in her epistolary travel narrative. The dissertation begins with a rare consideration of the Letters’ emulation of popular ‘Grand Tour’ narratives and examines how Montagu self-fashions as a female Grand Tourist. I propose that Montagu’s ‘double-voiced’ strategy of conformity and repudiation, while characteristic of proto-feminist writing of the day, effects the innovation for which the text is often acclaimed. Attention to Montagu’s use of satire, imitation and translation gives rise to analyses of her letters to Alexander Pope and Antonio Conti which at least partially challenge conventional accounts of her friendship with each of these ‘Men of Letters’ and propose the subversive elements of her correspondence. I conclude with an examination of Montagu’s negotiation of the role of motherhood, rarely a focus of scholarship of a text nevertheless written by a 6 woman who travelled to Turkey with a young son and there gave birth to a daughter.     The country house in English women's poetry 1650-1750: genre, power and identity Sharon L. Young A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the University’s requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2015 University of Worcester Abstract The country house in English women’s poetry 1650-1750: power, identity and genre This thesis examines the depiction of the country estate in English women’s poetry, 1650-1750. The poems discussed belong to the country house genre, work with or adapt its conventions and tropes, or belong to what may be categorised as sub-genres of the country house poem. The country house estate was the power base of the early modern world, authorizing social status, validating political power and providing an economic dominance for the ruling elite. This thesis argues that the depiction of the country estate was especially pertinent for a range of female poets. Despite the suggestive scholarship on landscape and place and the emerging field of early modern women’s literary studies and an extensive body of critical work on the country house poem, there have been to date no substantial accounts of the role of the country estate in women’s verse of this period. In response, this thesis has three main aims. Firstly, to map out the contours of women’s country house poetry – taking full account of the chronological scope, thematic and formal diversity of the texts, and the social and geographic range of the poets using the genre. Secondly, to interrogate the formal and thematic characteristics of women’s country house poetry, looking at the appropriation and adaptation of the genre.

    The Grand Tour of Europe Transcript Date: Tuesday, 5 April 2005 - 11:00PM Location: Barnard's Inn Hall THE GRAND TOUR OF EUROPE Professor Kathleen Burk What, exactly, was the Grand Tour? How did it differ from common-or-garden tourism? First of all, it was a journey to the Continent, primarily to France and Italy, to improve the sartorial, social and cultural awareness of well-born young men, to enable them to make useful contacts, and generally to introduce them to foreign lands and cultures. This does not mean that older men, and even women, did not travel for these reasons, and certainly, by the nineteenth century, thousands of them did. But the Grand Tour was normally an episode in the early lives of the moneyed and upper classes of the eighteenth century. The idea of a Grand Tour developed out of growing awareness in the seventeenth century of other times and other places. During the first half of the eighteenth century, particularly after 1720, enough young men embarked on a journey to the Continent for it to become an accepted stage in a man’s growing maturity; scheduling could sometimes be tricky, of course, since the journeys had to fit into the periods of peace between Great Britain and France. During the second half of the century, taking the Grand Tour was not only accepted, it was expected, and during the long period of peace from the end of the Seven Years’ War in 1763, there was a flood of visitors to the Continent. But in 1796, Napoleon occupied Italy, and it all stopped.

In his general history of the Grand Tour, Christopher Hibbert provides an extensive list of the souvenirs that the average tourist would attempt to obtain in the major Italian cities: books of prints, medals, maps, paintings and copies of paintings at Rome, as well as scent, pomatums, bergamot, imperial oil, and acqua di millefiori; snuff-boxes and silk from Venice; glasses from Murano; swords, canes, soap and rock-crystal at University of Cambridge on June 2, 2015 from Milan; mosaics of dendrite, and amber, musk and myrrh from Florence; point lace, sweet-meats and velvet from Genoa; snuff and sausages from Bologna; fire- arms from Brescia; milled gloves from Turin; masks from Modena; spurs and toys from Reggio nell’Emilia.2 Hibbert points out that the acquisition of specific items in specific locations was often recommended by the eighteenth-century guidebooks, and slavishly followed by tourists as they made their way north en route for home.

At the center of this shakeup was the modern structure par excellence : the State. This dissertation analyzes the dissolution of the bond between architecture and the State through a double lens. First, this study is framed by the workings of an architect, Aldo Rossi, whose practice mirrored this transformation in a unique way, going from Mussolini’s Italy to Reagan’s America, from the Communist Party to Disneyland. The second lens is provided by a set of technological apparatuses ii that, in this pre-digital world, impacted the reach of the State and the boundaries of architecture. Abstract In the last fifty or so years, Grand Tour has become a very popular and extensively researched phe- nomenon. Although mainstream researchers have analyzed various aspects of the Grand Tour, they have tended to adopt a narrow definition limited to the experiences of young English gentlemen undertaking a study tour of Italy and France. This article poses a somewhat provocative question: was the Grand Tour feasible as a study tour of an English gentleman visiting Poland­‑Lithuania? Based on contemporary travel writing, the author reveals the challenges and the difficult logistics of such an undertaking. Introduction English travelers on the Grand Tour undoubtedly hoped to visit as many European countries as possible, but if they could not see them all, they would certainly not leave out either France or Italy. Italy was one of the privileged destinations for the Grand Tour and the expression itself became a synonym of “Italienische Reise” well before Goethe used it in 1813 (Brilli 1998: 101). The reasons why the English upper and middle classes undertook such journeys may be manifold, but one seems to prevail: the Grand Tour was considered a very important educational experience, especially for the younger members of ranking society. Young people could acquire the skills of observation and analysis on such travels, building up the intrepidity and initiative essential for a successful future career. It was the best way for them to learn foreign languages, as well as to acquaint themselves with the customs, laws, economic interests, and governmental ways of other countries, enabling them to gain confidence and security when back on English soil. In sum, traveling offered the uninterrupted learning of lessons needed to build the “honnête homme” (Monga 1996:19). According to the Oxford English Dictionary (s.v. tour 3a), the expression Grand Tour appears in English literature from the mid-seventeenth century onwards, and shows that, even though English travel to Italy reached its height in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it was already important in the seventeenth century. This is indicated by the number of English travelogues issued in the 1600s that describe Italy.

However, given that the field is now dominated by studies which focus so much on travel writing (that is, narratives, their style and their conventions) rather than what is actually being written about (though Sweet, to her considerable credit, manages to avoid this besetting tendency in her excellent book), this is no bad thing, particularly given the fact that the authors clearly know so much. Readers of this book will undoubtedly come away with a much better sense of how British interest in classical art and more recent Italian painting came about, although ideally they will have at hand the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography in order to keep track of the countless names of often closely- related aristocrats which sometimes make the text difficult to follow.
