Greetings National Dental Association Family.

s your Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the National Dental Association and President of the Robert T. Freeman Dental Society, I want to thank each one of you who attended the 106th ANational Convention here in Washington, D.C. We are extremely blessed here in Washington, D.C. because we have the most committed, dedicated NDA members in the Robert T. Freeman Dental Society. Our Co-chairs Drs. St. Elmo Crawford, Hazel Harper Johns, and Edward Chappelle, Jr. led our team along with the national office to great heights to achieve the accolades received from many of you. We created an unforgettable memory when we welcomed the new President and CEO, Colgate-Palmolive, Mr. Noel Wallace, to meet and greet our NDA family. As I stated during the opening session, I would love to see a visual image to show what reaching one billion children looks like because that is what our collective NDA family helped to achieve through the Bright Smiles, Bright Futures® program. With the continued partnership, we are now beginning the second phase to reach the next one billion children, “One Smile at A Time”. What an exciting time to be a part of this National Dental Association Family. These last seven months have been quite enlightening. For those of you who have held the torch high and mighty, to whom we refer as our Past Presidents, I salute each one of you. It was truly an honor to be in your presence this year. I want to thank the members of the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee who take time out of their busy work week during the year to stop and get on the late-night calls, monthly calls and emergency calls on short notice to handle the business of your organization. To the House of Delegates under the leadership of Drs. Wayne Walker and Roderick Adams, thank you for your dedication and long hours of deliberating during this convention. Your time spent did not go unnoticed. NDAF, NDHA, NDAA and ANDA, thank you for allowing me a few minutes of your precious time to address each of you. I not only saw you, I heard you. Let's create that committee to have a special session with all family leaders present to have that discussion, hopefully at the next convention. None of us should feel like we are invisible because we are all invaluable to the progression of this organization. To our Student National Dental Association, my heart and soul was filled with your energy and presence at the convention. I tried to touch, hug and speak to as many of you as I could during the week trying to transfer some of your energy my way. I am anticipating with excitement as we observe your development and maturation as you prepare for leadership roles in the National Dental Association. Student Dr. Akeadra Bell, I hope we can plan impactful events over the next year. From the looks of things, Our Future looks quite Bright! To our corporate partners, foundations and supporters, we can not thank you enough for your continued dedication to the mission and education of the NDA members and communities. Together we continue to touch and enhance the importance of oral health, especially for those who cannot speak for themselves. Dr. John Daniels, II you are absolutely bridging the generations during your tenure. It is an honor and privilege to work with you this year. It is an amazing journey. I could go on and on about the 106th Convention of the National Dental Association but I will not. I will, however, leave you with these points. Keep them at the forefront of your minds: 1. Remember our mission. a. We promote oral health equity among people of color by harnessing the collective power of its members b. We advocate for the needs of and mentor dental students of color. c. We continue to raise the profile of our profession in our communities. 2. Remember Gratitude a. Be grateful for where you have been. b. Be grateful for where you are now. c. Be grateful for where you are going. If you could see yourselves through my eyes, then, and only then, would every one of you know how special you are to me. Let's finish the year off strong. Let's endear our new dentists and welcome them into our local chapters. Let's listen to their ideas to help make our mission better. For those of you who came to the convention and have been away a while, come on back and get busy with us. We could use an extra pair of hands here and there. For those of you who missed our fabulous Civil Rights Luncheon Speaker, Dr. Wilmer J. Leon, III, the Robert T. Freeman Dental Society has invited him to speak at our September meeting. Until we see each other again, Be Blessed.

Cheryl Y. Lee, D.D.S. Chairman of the Board of Trustees, NDA

It was made even more fun with the multi-colored sparkly composite material donated by VOCO. There was tons of fun to be had inside the hotel, but there was more fun waiting on the outside as well. Colgate’s mascot, Dr. Rabbit, was on hand to escort the children to the Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures® van located on the sidewalk of the hotel. On the van, the children received oral screenings and even more information on how to keep their mouths healthy. The children enjoyed going on the van and getting the goody bags with dental products and fun educational activities inside. Colgate is long-time partner of the NDA and the major sponsor of NDA-HN. Professionals shared information on trends in oral and overall health, ultimately providing members with projected solutions to bridging the health gap. The event was supported by AARP, Henry Schein, Inc. and an educational grant from GlaxoSmithKline. Leading the conversation was Mr. Stanley Bergman, CEO and Board Chairman of Henry Schein, Inc. Mr. Bergman’s presentation titled “The Power of Us” shed light on current trends affecting dentistry, some of which were sluggish economic growth, digital disruption, consumerism, ongoing demographic changes, reimbursement, retain orthodontic providers and the rise of Dental Support Organizations (DSO's). He spoke about an even larger issue in public health, Non Communicable diseases (NCD’s). Bergman reported in the U.S., where healthcare accounts for about 18% of the gross domestic product or GPD, NCD’s account for well over half of such. He also stated that data confirms a greater reduction in health care expenditures when is removed from patients suffering from NCD’s. Schein has partnered with the FDI, WHO, UNDP, NYU, and Tanzanian, Australian and Swedish governments, launched a program that helps grow culturally-specific professional organizations, in attempt to promote an understanding of the importance of oral health as a part of overall health access. Mr. Bergman highlighted demographic changes as an industry shifting trend. He says we need to be sure we are delivering healthcare that matches the needs of the community. Bergman also says the dental community should reflect the population. By 2045, Bergman says the U.S. is projected to be a “majority minority” country. Success of organizations will depend primarily on the reflection of the constant increase in diversity. Bergman says "diversity and cultural competency in the health care professions are essential to advancing care." Additionally, they have partnered with various NDA members who support Medicare coverage for medically-necessary oral/dental health therapies. One method of strengthening Medicare is expanding coverage, says Dr. Catherine Alicia Georges, AARP National Volunteer President. Furthermore, a key part of this expanded coverage is making dental benefits a basic part of Medicare, she says. As almost 2/3 of everyone on Medicaid has no dental coverage. Dr. Georges states, “the absence of a policy is essentially a contradiction of good science.” She adds “It ignores a host of studies that show a direct link between oral health and overall health.” As more and more disabled and elderly individuals choose to stay in their homes, versus retirement and/or nursing homes, government policy should reflect such. Georges reported that very few places serve individuals needing dental coverage through Medicare; however, over 58 million Americans use Medicare as the bedrock of their healthcare security. She advised that AARP is playing a lead role in a very visible and high stakes effort to bring down the high prices of prescription drugs. The price of prescription drugs has increased significantly and it is not fair, nor sustainable, says Dr. Georges. She informs members that there is a strong and growing movement to reduce drug prices - the “Stop RX Greed” campaign that about 14 states thus have taken action in, some even on the national level. What is it that we want as a FLOSSLINE - Post-Convention Edition 2019 17 result of this action? “Choices”, Dr. Georges expresses. Some of dentistry (as we learned at our previous symposium), because those choices include Medicare having the authority to negotiate, dentists are responsible for a great deal of opioid prescriptions. legalizing safe importation of drugs that are sold at lower prices Dr. Ricks suggests action steps should be taken prior to writing in other countries that can bring prices down, putting a cap on prescriptions. A few of these steps are: conducting medical and out of pocket costs for patients, stopping manufacturers from dental history checks to determine medicine and possible misuse, freezing out competition, greater transparency in drug pricing in review CDC and state board suggestions for safe prescribing, advertisements and more. registering with prescription drug monitoring programs, etc. AARP was instrumental in implementing notable acts in Dr. Ricks lectured on deaths related to tobacco use, as it affects terms of its health agenda and contribution to the ACA, such as both physical and oral health. Dr. Ricks advised that populations the RAISE Family Caregivers Act, which is leading to the creation with poor health result in workforce shortages and injuries, of a national strategy to support family caregivers, Credit For decreased school performance and absence, delayed dental care, Caring Act in which new tax credit up to $3,000 is available to etc. It is important to change perceptions regarding oral health eligible working family caregivers, the Dementia Discovery Fund, and disease so that oral health becomes an accepted component the Global Council and more. of health.
