ABSTRACT Work at Barāqish/Yathill in 2005-06 has produced sequences encompassing the Sabaean (13th-6th centuries BC) and Minaean/Arab (c. 550 BC-AD 1) occupa- tions. Abundant animal remains were retrieved and contexts of use and discard were obtained. Camels and donkeys are studied together as pack animals, the camel being the domestic dromedary. Their zooarchaeological and contextual study at Yathill is justified from this city’s location on the famous frankincense caravan route of the 1st millennium BC. An extramural stratigraphic sequence documenting the relationships between the city and the adjoining plain from c. 820 BC to the Islamic era was investigated to the northwest of the Minaean KEY WORDS wall. Domestic camels were present by 800 BC, the earliest well-documented Dromedary (Camelus occurrence in Yemen; wild dromedary herds were still in the area during the dromedarius), Camelus sp. wild, 7th century and perhaps later. The study of the archaeological context links donkey (Equus asinus), these Sabaean-age camels to campsites possibly formed by non-residents. This caravan trade, archaeological indicators pattern greatly developed during the Minaean period, with trade-jar handling of ‘caravan’ activity, posts outside the walled city and frequent stationing of camels and donkeys on ‘frankincense route’ in the upper talus. -

It’s a question that scientists have been asking for more than 100 years but now new research may nally have an answer. Most animal species have developed distinctive colours and patterns to help disguise them in their natural environment. Like a soldier’s camouage, the colouring and patterns look like the background, so it's hard to tell the dierence between the animal and its surroundings. But zebras live on brown grassy plains and their stripes make them stand out, not disappear. They may as well be holding signs for the lions saying, “come and eat me”. Now we may have the answer. By studying where most zebras live, scientists have found that the animals share their home with lots of nasty biting tsetse ies and horse ies. They also discovered that these ies don’t like striped patterns and will stay away from them. So, it’s likely that the zebras developed stripes to act as an insect repellent. That may sound crazy – to make yourself a target for lions just to keep away the ies. But these aren’t ordinary irritating ies. Tsetse ies carry diseases that can kill, while horse ies tear the animals’ skins leaving them at risk of infections. -

They are a reservoir of genetic variation 17 useful for properly responding to agriculture needs in light of ongoing climate changes. Evolutionary 18 processes that occur in response to extreme environmental conditions could also be better understood 19 using adapted local populations. Herein, different evolutionary histories for two of the world 20 northernmost native cattle breeds from Russia were investigated. They highlighted Kholmogory as a 21 typical taurine cattle, while Yakut cattle separated from European taurines ~5,000 years ago and 22 contain numerous ancestral and some novel genetic variants allowing their adaptation to harsh 23 conditions of living above the Polar Circle. -

In the summer of 1895 I noticed a peculiar variation in the leaves of a watermelon vine, growing in a patch in Clay county, Kansas. The plants were of the variety known as the " Georgia Rattlesnake," and, excepting the single plant mentioned, were of the usual type. nThe leaves of the watermelon seem to be quite constant in form. They are usually described as palmately five-lobed, the lobes being mostly sinuate-pinnatifid, with all the segments obtuse (Fig. ib). But in this plant the lobed condition of all the leaves was almost entirely absent, the border being only moderately undulate (Fig. ic). Some of the seed from this individual were planted in 1896, and the same leaf pe- culiarity was report- ed. The form has been successfully cul- t i v a t e d every year since that time, al- though it was usually planted in patches with the ordinary kind and much cross- pollination must have resulted. Such reversions -may perhaps be of frequent occurrence in the species. It is a well-known fact that the leaves of many fossil plants from the Cretaceons have entire borders, while the modern representatives of the same genera are often serrate, denticulate or lobed. -

Starting from the techniques which make the isolation of ancient DNA more effective, through the methods of its amplification and sequencing, to finally discovering the whole genomes, the plan of making de – extinction real is becoming gradually more possible. Successful sequencing of the mitochondrial genome of extinct quagga was a breakthrough, then the time for other species came. Great hopes are placed on restriction enzymes, especially those which work in CRISPR/Cas9 system, which enable us to edit the genomes of living relatives still more efficiently. Apart from genome editing, the methods of selective back - breeding or cell nuclear transfer are used. Each species requires an individual consideration in the terms of the DNA material available, choosing the optimal method and the likelihood of successful de – extinction. The idea, however, leaves still many questions unanswered on the aspects such as ethics, ecology, funds and society, therefore it is doubtful, if we are ever going to face the full restoration of population once gone extinct. -

However, due to human impacts fewer than 50 individuals remained by the 1950’s. Conservation efforts over the past 50 years have resulted in the population increasing to over 4700 individuals and having moved on the IUCN red list, from Critically Endangered to Least Concern. As there are still many isolated meta-populations, CapeNature established a Biodiversity Management Plan for the conservation of Cape mountain zebra in the Western Cape. In 2001, 15 (six males and nine females) Cape mountain zebra was reintroduced into Bakkrans Nature Reserve, situated in the Cederberg Wilderness Area of South Africa. -
