Learning today. Leading tomorrow. Notable Vanier Alumni Otis Grant takes swing at second chance By Herb Zurkowsky, Montreal Gazette April 3, 2006 It has been almost seven years since the night Otis Grant was nearly robbed of his life, and certainly lost the prime years of his professional boxing career. Time has helped erode, if not erase, the memory. "I try not to think about that," he said. "What's in the past should remain in the past." What might have been had he not been driving south on Highway 15, near St. Jerome, Que., on that warm, late spring night in June 1999, meeting another car travelling in the wrong direction? Grant swerved, taking the brunt of the impact on his side to spare his two passengers: daughter Alexandria and fellow boxer Herc Kyvelos. His passengers escaped unscathed, but Grant fractured five ribs, punctured a lung and shattered his shoulder blade. He remained in a coma for seven days. According to doctors, his excellent condition won Grant his life, but after awakening, he was told he'd never again fight. Grant had lost his World Boxing Organization middleweight title six months earlier to Roy Jones, but his prospects seemed bright. Grant's contract with promoter Art Pelullo was nearing an end. He had become a sparring partner for Jones and there was talk of him joining Jones' stable, which certainly would have boosted Grant's career. Learning today. Leading tomorrow. Notable Vanier Alumni "Things could have happened ... the possibilities were tremendous," Grant said. "But I also know there's a lot of BS in this business. -

Grant Wins Easy Unanimous Decision by Bill Beacon
Learning today. Leading tomorrow. Notable Vanier Alumni Grant Wins Easy Unanimous Decision By Bill Beacon November 23, 2003 MONTREAL (CP) – Going back into the boxing ring after a five-year absence turned out to be just another day on the job for former champion Otis Grant of Montreal. Grant came out firing speedy combinations to score an lopsided unanimous decision over South African Dingaan Thobela on Saturday afternoon at the Bell Centre. “People were nervous for me but I wasn’t nervous at all,” said Grant (32-2-1), who hopes to work his way back to a world title fight within two years. “As we were going out to the ring I told (promoter) Yvon Michel ‘I don’t feel anything. That’s not normal.’ “But I went out and did the job.” Grant, 35, had the crowd of 3,660 chanting his nickname Magic as he won all eight rounds against Thobela (40-11-2), an aging, three-time world champion who lost his fourth match in a row. Judge Richard de Carufel scored it 80-70, Jean Lapointe had it 80-71 and Sylvain Leblanc had it 80-71. The Canadian Press also scored the bout 80-71. Thobela, 37, was not as impressed with Grant as the judges, saying the quick but light-hitting Grant didn’t hurt him and never had him in trouble. “He threw a lot of punches, but they weren’t doing anything to me,” said Thobela, known as the Rose of Soweto. “If I was in 100 per cent condition, I would have stopped him. -
