52 ...... Financial Statements 1 I am proud to present the Presidents Report for the 2009/2010 season. I must start off by thanking the previous Executive Committee, in particular Neil Hough, for establishing a sound base both structu- ally and fi nancially for me to continue to develop and expand. The clubs Executive Committee, General Committee and Club members have all worked together extremely well to provide a posi- tive environment. Our Juniors area has continued to grow and improve. Naomi has done a fantastic job in her fi rst year as Junior’s Representative with the Nipper Surf Education Program. She has brought order into an area which can appear to the outside observer to be complete chaos. She implemented our Sun Smart Policy by ensuring every nipper received a long sleeved rashie, broad brimmed hat and sunscreen, as well as providing shelter and water on the beach during sessions. I must say, our Nippers looked like a unifi ed group at carnivals in their rashies. Terence has kept the Juniors outside Nippers interested by keeping our Youth Leadership Program going. With Juniors running our Nipper Surf Education age groups and becoming trainers for our SRC and Bronze courses, Jan Juc’s youth retention and future look to be in good shape. Luke and his posse have kept the Life Saving Services area in tip top shape. Life Saving Services is the most important role of our Club and, although at the time of writing this report the results of the district patrol competition have not been published, I know that both State Centre inspections performed this season were of an extremely high standard with both patrols experiencing a full point score. Our competition results in both State and National Patrol and First Aid competitions is proof of our high patrolling standards and I know this is an area we can continue to encourage and improve. This year Neil Hough has established the Jan Juc SLSC Foundation, which is an account specifally designed to hold funds for Lifesaving Services. It has been established to accept benelovent president donations from deceased estates or philanthropic organisations and is designed to fund our Lifesaving Steve Jewson Services area in the event the Club experiences times of fi nancial diffi culty and it presently holds $150,000. I thank Neil on behalf of the Jan Juc SLSC members for all his efforts on this important contri- bution to ensure the Club’s fi nancial future. Our competition area is still building. We have a strong group of competitors who are willing to expand competition into other areas such as fi rst aid/patrol competitions and pool competitions. I must congratulate Dean Sibun and Dave Ulbrick for encouraging our young competitors to take on lifesaver competition. This area of competition is growing in numbers at Juc and the standard of our beach patrols is a direct benefi ciary of such competition. We have also continued to make inroads into pool lifesaving. George Quine and Daryl Moss have been working hard to get our younger competitors interested and with State team selection criteria changing, pool competition will be an integral part of the selection process. We are lucky to have a team of dedicated coaches led by Naantali Marshall guiding our competitors and it is hoped that a more diversifi ed training program can be offered next season. Fundraising has been very successful this season. It is the one area of the club which unifi es all sections - Juniors, patrolling members, competitors, parents and associate members. We started off with Bondo’s Golf Day, which is a great day with many members being involved in playing as well as running the event. Bondo always does a fantastic job with this fundraiser and we thank him for his efforts. Four intersection collections were run this season with excellent results. All up, $34,886 was raised, mainly by competitors. The Annual Door Knock is a fundraising event in which the Nippers and their families can get involved and is a great opportunity for the Club to distribute its Know Your Beach brochure, which is an education document on surf knowledge and safety. We still need to get more members involved in the Door Knock because little legs get very tired. Despite the lack of a major sponsor, the Danger 1000 Ocean Swim remains steady in numbers, but we took a bit of a hit on the Danger Young Guns Ocean Swim due to LSV’s scheduling of the Junior Regional Championships on the same day, which is a qualifying carnival for teams at State Titles. However, numbers were up again for the Bells Bash Cliff Run and the introduction of the Junior Juc Bash proved extremely suc- cessful. Many thanks to all our members who are involved in running these events. We have Nippers, Nipper parents, competitors, patrolling members, associate members and even friends of members helping out with this major fundraiser and it’s great to see that sort of cooperation in action. Particular thanks to Peter Smith and Ian Blanchonette who put in months of preparation and organisation and who are preparing for next years events as we speak. This year has also seen an increase in the amount of funds we have received in the form of grants 2 - around $35,700 in total. Many of our members apply for grants from their place of employment, which has always assisted with equipment for the Club, however, this year saw Naomi Madigan suc- cessfully apply for grants which paid for two marquees, two fi bre glass nipper boards and team uni- forms for the Junior Vics. Glenn Voss successfully won a grant from SLSA for our water tank, Jaci won a grant from GORCC to fi nish off our beach access track, Wes McDonald won a grant from RACV for a defi brilator and Judy Sedger won the CSESP grant for two IRB motors and six rescue tubes. Along with administration and patrol uniform grants from LSV, every Life Saving Club also gained $5,000 from the Victorian Government. Due to the economic climate, sponsors have been hard to come by this season, so a very big thank you to those businesses and companies who were on board this season supporting the Jan Juc SLSC both fi nancially and in kind. In particular, sponsors Westpac, RSMI Bird Cameron and New Zealand Steel. At the conclusion of last season the LSV Awards of Excellence saw three successful Jan Juc members. Christina Ruiz was named the Junior Athlete of the Year, Scott Tannahill was named Coach of the Year and Daryl Moss was named Nipper Parent of the Year. Congratulations, they have all put in a great deal of work in their respective areas and have continued to do so this season. This year Jan Juc has put in a nomination for Club of the Year based on our Junior Leadership Program, so fi ngers crossed that our nomination is looked upon favourabley. I have been fortunate to have the support of a strong Executive Committee who have had to go above and beyond this season and I must also thank Neil Hough and Dave Ulbrick for valuable ad- vice. Adminstrative and IT support are much appreciated from Jaci Chin-Jewson and Dean Sibun. Judy Sedger has put in many of years of precise bookkeeping and it is partly due to her diligence to her role that the Club is in such good shape fi nancially. Judy will be standing down as Finance Manager, so I would like to take this opportunity to thank her for the past four years of service and committee support. The people running our Club are reliable and passionate and it is because of their input that the Club is friendly, positive and successful. president Steve Jewson

The Jan Juc juniors have again excelled both on and off the beach in the 2009/10 season. The club continues to benefi t from the direction and investment in its junior ranks with record numbers volun- teering to participate as leaders in our Nipper program, completing Bronze and SRC awards and of course active and vigilant on Patrol. The Nipper Surf Ed program was again a major feature of the Summer and was a raging success thanks to Naomi Madigan and her band of willing helpers. Similarly the club had the benefi t of a highly successful and fully subscribed Bronze camp led by our Training and Instruction Manager Bec Schot-Guppy and Aaron Tannahill. Similarly, the opportunities provided through the coaching and surf skills development provided by our coaches and led by Naantali Marshall enhanced not only the skills of the clubs up and coming members, but also enabled them to be exposed to some fan- tastic role models. Evidence of the quality of Jan Juc Surf Lifesaving Club juniors program and the juniors themselves was provided by them reaching the fi nals of the Regional Victoria Young Achievers Awards for the second year running. In addition, members were selected in State and National teams and provided fantastic competition at regional State and Australian titles. A key element of any day at a carnival is the support and camaraderie and the junior team have demonstrated again their closeness and care for each other. Away from the beach the Jan Juc teamwork was also on display with the club having two Junior teams and an individual competitor in the Anaconda multi discipline event at Lorne, and a winning team in the Run Geelong 12km event to name just a couple. Finally, the club again welcomed the opportunity to acknowledge and showcase the qualities of selfl essness, team work and community service through the Outstanding Male and Female Junior awards. This season’s deserving winners with outstanding records of service – particularly in the area of completing signifi cant additional Patrol hours together with an unswerving preparedness to sup- port fundraising, teams and general club activities were Billie Rosewall and James Quine. In closing this report my thanks to fellow Executive members and particular thanks to Naomi Madigan for her tireless and dedicated work in delivering a terrifi c Nippers program and strong foundation for our Juniors.

When Steve Jewson was trying to convince me to take on the role as Nipper Manager, I think his line was “It’s not that much work.....”. I have had no experience in Surf Lifesaving, apart from my kids in Nippers, so it was one steep learning curve. Luckily, the volunteers around the club have been amazing. I spent the 1st few months calling people constantly, especially Steve, who was very patient in explaining how it all worked. Surf Education This year we had 224 Nippers in our program with large numbers especially in the under 9s and under 11s (see table below). We tried to have all kids enrolled before the program to help with the large administration workload, but as in previous years we had a number of families trying to enrol at the 1st session. The dilemma being, not wanting to turn members away, but trying to also educate families to get in early. 09/10 Nipper Numbers Age group Male Female Total Under 8s 8 18 26 Under 9s 23 22 45 Under 10s 17 14 31 Under 11s 19 18 37 Under 12s 21 8 29 Under 13s 12 16 28 Under 14s 14 14 28 Total 114 109 224 With Nipper numbers continuing to grow, the question is raised as to how to effectively manage the increasing numbers and still provide the welcoming, family and individualised program that we cur- rently provide. As numbers increase, pressure is placed on volunteers and equipment. As Nippers is the avenue to recruit future Lifesavers for our beaches, the club needs to carefully consider how to manage this growth most effectively, to ensure we can maintain the level of quality as well as cater to the growing numbers. This season, the program was condensed into 2 ½ weeks. This was a controversial decision with pros and cons to how it worked. Many people commented that for volunteers it was quite rushed and people were quite tired at the end of the program. There were others however, who preferred the shorter program, giving those parents who work more opportunity to become involved and a chance for volunteers to have a holiday or break before their kids went back to school. Keeping both those comments in mind, we hope to have a few more down days in between sessions next season but still not spreading it over the whole January break. As usual, the junior members who stepped up as “Surf Ed” Managers and assistants for the program were fantastic. It is so wonderful to see the number of young people who give up their spare time to volunteer for the club. Without this man power the program would not be so successful. 8 09/10 Surf Ed Managers and Assistants (Blair Morton, Thomas Reed, Darion Kendall all fi lled in gaps when they could) Age group Managers Assistants Under 8 Chloe Leigh-Smith & Cal Sedger Ashleigh Smith, Dayna Bentley,Lucy Coates, Natalie Kloosterman & Dana Crameri Under 9 Cassie Mahony, Brod Jewson, Elli Grace Robertson, Tanner Redden, Maddy Dunlop & James Darke McDonald, & Allie Kendall Under 10 James Quine, Rhi Williams-Demmon, Cassie Moss, Jacqui Humphries, Georgia Emily Waters & Henry Leigh-Smith Cogan & Sophie Radalj Under 11 Billie Rosewall, Harriett Smith, Jacob Ellie Banks, Darcy Rawson-Curry Reed & Cassidy Redden Under 12 Molly Blanchonette, Nick Agius, Zak Steven Russell, Ruby Campbell, Maia Durand & Ash Rawson-Currie Chabrier-Pope & Mitchell Williams-Demmon Under 13 Mich Payne, Aaron Tannahill & Ash Taylor Bett, Rachelle Macfi e & Sophie Masek Prosser Presentation Night We had record numbers at our presentation night showing how our rooms are nearly out growing the number of families in the club! Training this year started the last weekend of the September school holidays. We have had an incredible increase in volunteer water safety and coaches which makes the training sessions much more successful. The biggest challenge for our coaches has been catering for all abilities. One of the many reasons Jan Juc SLSC is such a great club is that all Nippers of all abilities and interest levels are welcome at training. Nippers who would just like to improve their skill level and fi tness are welcome as well as those who are focused on competition and succeeding. The coaches have a tricky job of offering a challenging program for the more skilled competitors as well as offering a sim- pler program for those who are just starting out. With an increase in coaches and water safety this issue has been partly met by breaking up into smaller groups to run more individualised programs. I must make special mention of Wes McDonald who took on the position of Head Coach. Wes did an incredible job of running the training sessions with such large numbers and varied abilities. I have had many parents feed back to me that Wes’s calm and engaging personality has been amazing in raising their child’s confi dence. Thankyou Wes. Thank you to the following people for their help with the Surf Sport program: Head Coach Wes McDonald Under 14 Coach Daryl Moss Regular Coaches Steve Jewson, Sean O’brien, Mick Russell, Ben Bowen, Bram Mcleod, Nichol Wylie, George Quine, Ian Blanchonette, Jeff Smith, Stu Humphries 9 Regular Water Safety Steve Thompson, Shane Madigan, Aaron Green, Tony Paatsch, Stu Higgins, Les Norman, Jason Moran, Deb Russell, Glenn Flexman, Stu Higgins, Julian Sweeney nippers Club Champs Naomi Madigan The Junior Club Champs was scheduled for a day which was planning on being over 40C. We all watched the forecasts wondering whether we would be able to go ahead. Luckily the temperature forecast did come down, and we went ahead having it at Jan Juc. These people have been so helpful at Carnivals and throughout the Surf Ed and Surf Sports Program. They all showed great sportsmanship, determination and guts in some really chal- lenging conditions. Our Nippers really do our club proud. The only challenge with Carnivals from a club point of view is trying to provide the right number of volunteers for each carnival. Each club who competes are expected to provide 1 Offi cial and 1 Water Safety for every 10 competitors as well as IRB drivers and rescue boards. Sometimes this has created huge problems with LSV expecting every volunteer to have the appropriate qualifi cation as well as a Working with Children Check. Currently we have some parents who are not members and therefore are not expected to provide a WWCC. This reduces our volunteer pool considerably. Sponsorship We have been very fortunate to have a number of great donations and grants this season for which I am very grateful. GMHBA (through Torquay Community Bank) – Sun tent ($1,500) Sports & Rec Victoria – Sun Tent & State Team Uniform ($3,500) Woolworths – Nipper Boards ($1,000) Jan Juc Caravan Park – Nipper Boards ($1,000) New Zealand Steel – Nipper Boards ($5,600) Rip Curl, Quiksilver, Strapper – donations of prizes 10 Next season I am expecting to go round again – if it’s ok with everybody else. After doing it once and knowing what it’s all about, I am assuming it will be easier. The team, who have been so successful this season, will hopefully all step up again as well as some new faces. We will learn from what worked and what didn’t this season, and aim to keep improving to ensure the ultimate success of our nipper program. Finally………… I would not be able to fi nish this report without acknowledging the efforts of all the wonderful volunteers who have helped out with the juniors this season. Every amount of help has all been so appreciated. It can be a real challenge when parents have young children, jobs and other family demands and the time people give up to help is really inspiring. Below are a few of the key people who I have yet to mention in the report above…. Thanks to: Steve Jewson & Jaci Jewson – for the amazing support Wendy Breer – for coordinating the Surf Ed Managers and Assistants Shaun Kinna – for coordinating the Beach during Surf Ed Deb Russell & Robyn Voss– for all their behind the scenes work Kate Redden & Mandy O’brien – for coordinating the canteen Stu & Linda Humphries – for maintaining the boards and the board register and manning the shop Shane Madigan – for supporting me in allnippers aspects of this role Naomi Madigan

13 development camp Rachel Mather On the 13th - 15th of February, Life Saving Victoria held a development camp in Philip Island. We learnt about leadership, responsi- bility, and making decisions. We arrived at L.S.V Headquarters in Port Mel- bourne at 7:30 on Saturday morning, where we all got on the bus, and made our way to the camp. We then arrived at Philip Island, at 9:30 and walked to our accommodation. After putting our bags in our cabins, we got a tour of the camp, and then we were let loose for the fi rst activity of the day, a photo trail. For this activity we had to run around the property, in our teams, looking for the things in the photos. This made us work together with a group of new people using leadership and under 13 communication skills. After lunch, we were given a short amount of free time, which was ended abruptly, when Kate, one of the leaders, hurried us out onto the oval, the place we’d been told to go to if there was an emer- gency! Not quite knowing what was going on, and a little worried, we all ran out onto the oval, where a Life Saving Helicopter landed! We ran over to the helicopter, excited and somewhat relieved that there was no emergency, as the crew climbed out. They talked to us about the sorts of things they did while on patrol, and told us a bit about the brand new helicopter, which was only on its second day of patrol! Then enough with the talking, we were ready for some action! The helicopter took off, and some of the leaders swam out, where we watched them get rescued and then carried back to shore. This event was without a doubt, the highlight of the camp! After that we played some team building games. For the fi rst one, we had to stand in a tight circle with the rest of our team, put our hands in the middle, and hold onto a random hand, not our own or the person next to us, then tried to untangle ourselves. This required leadership skills, and great com- munication between team mates. Another one we played was where the team sat in a circle, and the captain was told a scene they had to create, for example Television, so the team had to make a lounge room with a family watching T.V. within a short period of time. This activity involved clear com- munication skills, the ability to consider other people’s ideas, changing your own if theirs is better, creativity, and fast thinking. That night, we watched a movie about taking responsibility for your own actions, making decisions, and moving on, before going to bed, to get a good night’s sleep before Sunday’s activities. In the morning, after a good healthy breakfast, we had six activities to do. They involved fi rst aid, signals between water craft and the shore, working together to get the board around the marker and back in with the team holding on at all times, and tube rescues! This was lots of fun and we learned about what to do if someone was silly enough to play soccer with a lawn mower (one of the fi rst aid scenarios). This was a great camp, and it taught us about the skills you need to be a good leader, about taking responsibility for things, valuable skills for the future, that we will use for the rest of our lives, and an opportunity that defi nitely should not be missed!

14 handicap swim Jan Juc Beach Over the course of three weeks John Prosser held his handicap swim, which has been missing from Jan Juc’s calendar for the last two years. The original concept was to encourage nippers and juniors to take part in surf swimming in a handicap format. There was one category for Under 12’s down and one for Under 13’s to Under 15’s. This season John encouraged all members to take part in three handicap swims. The fi rst race was very well attended with all SRC’s and most new Bronzies taking part, along with older members such as Ken Isaac and Bruce Harvey. Andrew Isaac put in an exceptional performance starting with the highest handicap and still managing to win by a considerable margin. Special mention must go to the youngest swimmer, David Mather, who did a sterling job completing the race. Numbers dropped off considerably for the next two swims with one particular race providing a bit of drama. With big surf conditions and a massive sweep, swimmers entered the water up past the creek mouth in order to use the sweep to their advantage to the buoy. Edison Jewson was the fi rst swimmer to enter the water. By the time he was halfway out, he had been swept past the tower. John Prosser became so concerned he stripped down and went in after him. Tanner Redden was sent out on a board to tell Edison and Hugh Neerhut to return to shore. Hugh was a little annoyed ‘cos he’d “al- most made it out!”. Reports from lifeguards in the tower were that both swimmers were still swimming strongly and they hadn’t been too worried about them. Still, we thank John for being ever diligent, otherwise Edison might have ended up at Torquay. Congratulations to Steve Jewson (2nd), Jenny Moss (3rd) who, although didn’t qualify for the trophy, competed in every race successfully. Edison also competed in every race with one DNF. Male winners – 1st Alex Neerhut Female winners - 1st Amy McNamara 2nd Jacob Reed 2nd Ally Kendall 3rd Brod Jewson 3rd Cassie Moss

Left to right: The swimmers are off to a fl ying start; some of our younger competitors get ready to hit the water; Mossy and Brod battle it out for a placing.

16 Another season over and what a learning curve it has been. Firstly I would like to thank all those people who assisted me throughout the season. I would also like to congratulate and offer a huge thank you to the Life Saving Services Commit- tee Rebecca Schot-Guppy, Aaron Tannahill, Pat White and Rebecca Johnson. We have learned a lot this season and look forward to using this next season. It was a new look Lifesaving Services Sub-Com- mittee this year. However, the lack of experience was more than made up for in hard work and dedication with the end result being a success- ful season. There are undoubtedly a number of challenges remaining for the Sub-Committee but I feel the new look committee is best placed to continue to work hard to complete these chal- lenges. Season 2009/2010, saw many improvements with two of our patrols doing exceptionally well in the patrol effi ciency. Ricky Payne’s patrol gained an almost perfect score, only losing points on a count back, and Paul Iannazzo’s patrol gaining bonus points in the second state centre inspec- tion. We were also able to get a handle on all the IRB equipment that we have and plans are currently being carried out to ensure that past problems that have affected our IRB section are eliminated. Looking forward there is still much work to be done. The Sub-Committee has a big winter planned with plenty of training sessions. Indeed, we are primed for a huge 10/11 season. If you have an idea about how to improve the Lifesaving Services delivered by the Club get in contact with your Sub-Committee and be heard.

18 Instruction and Examination is an area which Jan Juc Surf Club continues to develop through increased participation in awards and increasing and main- taining standards within our training. This year was my fi rst year in the position of Instruction and Examination Manager and I would like to thank Luke Van Meel, Geoff Thompson and Aaron Tannahill for the extra- ordinary amount of help and advice they have given me throughout the season. In September I set out many goals for Jan Juc training and assessment. Most were achieved and I will continue to work hard to achieve the rest over the winter months and hopefully building upon these next season. The 09 Bronze Camp was Jan Juc’s biggest ever with 39 enthusiastic candidates. I would like thank every- one who was involved in helping make the Bronze camp a success. A special thank-you to Greg Touzel for opening up his house and hosting all the Bronzies to a pizza night. Also Bronze Camp would not go ahead without the work of our dedicated training team who give up a week of work to volunteer their time to train and supervise the candidates. This year’s helpers include Ash Prosser, Blair Morton, Aaron Tannahill, Harriet Smith, Amy Stekelenburg, Billie Rosewall, Christina Ruiz, Nick Aguis, Callum Sedger, Andrew Van Meel and Jake Van Meel. SRC Camp again grew this season to 32 candidates. This week is an excellent opportunity for our under 14’s to create strong friendships and experience a range of new activities. SRC camps success was shown this year as we had 90% of our original SRC’s return and undertake their Bronze. Again I would like to thank everyone who helped throughout the week espe- cially Jenny Moss who generously gave up her time to feed us. Congratulations to all our new SRC’s on successfully becoming our youngest enthusiastic patrolling members. Both our Bronze Camp and SRC camp are increasingly recognised around the state as being among the best. Our candidates are some of the best adapted and knowledgeable in all areas of the awards. I am very proud of this and as a Surf Club we aim to maintain and improve this over the upcoming seasons. However, it is the friendships that are built over these weeks through our range of activities that shows the true success of our camps. I would not continue to do this role if it wasn’t for the fun and friendships that are created as result of running such high intensity camps. This season we put through 26 new IRB crews. Thank-you so much to Brian and Lisa Happ and Andrew Hough who helped train our crews to such a high standard. Congratulations to everyone that achieved any new award this season. I could not do this job without the help of everyone I have mentioned above. I would also like to thank Davina Jackson, Bec Johnson, Deb Johnson, Pat White, Andrew Mather, Jaci Chin-Jewson and Steve Jewson for their help and advice. Thank-you to anyone else that I may have accidentally left-out that has helped me through-out the season.

20 Well another season has wrapped up and it was a fantastic one at that. There have been some great results on patrol’s, two medals at the Australian Titles (pretty good strike rate considering the amount of events run) and promising activity in other areas of the surf club. This season I took on the challenge to jump onto the committee and be the IRB Manager and al- though it took some time to get into a routine due to schooling, it was a good learning curve. There is no chance I could have done the job without the assistance I had from Luke Van Meel, who did water safety representing the surf club at the Point Lonsdale swim along with Mick Ryan. To add to that, Luke assisted with the maintenance of the IRB’s and motors. Also, a big thank you to Patrick White and Scott Tannahill for picking up motors when I wasn’t available. The club ran an IRB crew course in December/January and 15 club members took on the challenge, all passing with fl ying colours ... literally, fl ying! The assessment was in a solid three foot swell and the candidates had a ball crashing through the surf. A big thank you goes out to Scott Tannahill for driv- ing for the assessment and to Bec Schot-Guppy for putting the paperwork together. With 15 new IRB crewies in the water, this means that not only will there be more experience on patrols, but also a chance for more IRB drivers next season when these 15 superstars are eligible to have a crack at driving the little red boats. A huge thank you goes out to Brian and Lisa Happ. The experience and knowledge that this fantastic duo have in this area is exceptional and with the assistance from these two during the crew course and with maintenance, all is appreciated at the highest level. Thank you! The plan for the off season is still being debated, but the off season for most members is the pre sea- son for some. The club has many tasks for me and the lifesaving committee to undertake during the winter months including: Repairing two IRB’s that need a bit of work done to pass inspection for the 2010/2011 season. These IRB’s can be used for water safety for the Danger 1000 and training. The club has ordered two new Tohatsu motors for the 2010/2011 season. These motors need to be prepared over the winter so they are ready to use for when they are needed. The possibility of conducting training for an IRB racing team. This is my last season as a ‘junior’ and there won’t be any more chances for me to claim a cheap pennant in U/19 Rescue Tube Rescue at carnivals, but I will hopefully continue to row boats and have an involvement with the competition side. The up and coming crop of youngsters is a passionate group and there seems to be more and more every year. Well done Juc! Go The Tigers! (Yes, I haven’t given up on them yet). 21 awards Season 2009/2020

Bruce was the driving force behind the implementation of Administrative support for the Club. Congratulations to Pete and Bruce on all Club acheivements during long surf lifesaving careers and on being well deserved inductees as Jan Juc SLSC Life Members. 23 competition John Prosser

24 competition John Prosser On reviewing the 2009/10 season, our club can be justly proud of a number of positive results. The season opening training camp at Lorne was an overwhelming success being well attended by over 30 com- petitors assisted greatly in building team morale. The success of our First Aid , Patrol Competitors and Champion Lifesaver Competitors have positioned Jan Juc as No. 1 club in this section of com- petition in Victoria and have established Jan Juc as the best represented club at the Australian Titles in 2009/10. Well done to the following competitors: U15 Cassie Moss, Nicole Quinne, Maddie McDonald, Sophie Masek, Jay Moss, Karl Voss, Tanner Redden, Steven Russell U17 Christina Ruiz, Billie Rosewall, Harriet Smith, James Quinne, Cassidy Redden U19 Leigh Ryan, Blair Morton Open Dominik White, Jodie Finn, David Ulbrick, Dean Sibun, Steve Iannazzo, Will McCance, Adam Touzell, Luke Van Meel, Brian Lim The experience gained and under the ongoing guidance of David “The Professor” Ulbrick, the elusive Gold Medal at the Australian Titles is obtainable. The most important aspect of this discipline of com- petition is that Juc members provide the public with extremely competent beach patrol members. Congratulations to Maddie McDonald, Christine Ruiz and Brian Lim who were selected to represent Victoria at the Interstate Championships held in over the long weekend in January. Following these championships, Maddie was selected in the Australian Pool Lifesaving Team whilst Christina is off to Egypt to complete at the World Titles. It was pleasing to see a large number of U14 competitors ‘having a go’ during the season at senior carnivals, hopefully they enjoyed the experience of competing and will progress through the age groups. Thanks to Daryl Moss and his brigade of helpers for looking after the U15’s. The Victorian Titles were held at Lakes Entrance on 6th and 7th March, combining both the Nipper competitors and Senior competitors. Whilst our Senior competitors results did not reach the heights of previous years, team morale and participation was excellent. Congratulations must go to Lakes Entrance Surf Lifesaving Club for putting on two great days of competition. Australian Titles moved back to Kurrawa Beach, Queensland after a three year period in Perth. Un- fortunately the championship was cancelled on the Friday after the tragic death of a Queenscliff competitor. Prior to the cancellation, our champion patrol competitors won bronze for the second year in a row, whilst Dominick White fi nished a very creditable 5th in the Open Champion Lifesaver. Both well deserved results. Team members David Ulbrick, Dean Sibun, Steve Iannazzio, Dominick White, Luke Van Meel and Leigh Ryan. In conclusion, I would like to thank Jack Redden for looking after the U17’s; Terence Reed and Jeff Smith for their assistance on packing/unpacking the gear trailer during the season; Ian Blanchonette, George Quinn, Daryl Moss and Jeff Smith for their offi cial duties on carnival days. To Naantali Marshall, Daryl Moss, Rick Payne and Steve Jewson for their coaching input and establish- ing a positive training philosophy for the competitors. Thanks to ‘The Ghost’ Michael Keys who is responsible for preparing the competion area at every carnival – No Ghost, No Carnival. Finally over my last seven reports, I have expressed my thanks to Deano, so by now I hope he knows we appreciate his efforts.

Cameron Prosscongratulationser Following Cameron’s success at the 2010 Australian Swimming Championships held in Sydney, he has been selected to represent at the Pan Pacifi c Games in Irvine USA in August 2010, followed by the in New , India in October 2010. At the Pan Pacs Cam will swim in the 50 metres and 100 metres Freestyle individual events and the 4 x 100 Freestyle Relay. In India he will compete in the 50 metres freestyle individual swim and is hoping for the 100 metres freestyle and the relay swims. Following his success at the recent Telstra Grand Prix meet in Sydney, with wins in both 50 & 100 Freestyle, the individual 100 Freestyle and Relay swims are a strong possibility. Cameron, we wish you the best of luck representing Australia at these two major international events. 26 coach Naantali Marshall Well done to everyone on a fantastic 2009/10 season. A very young group braved the Jan Juc conditions training week in and week out and were rewarded with great results at carnivals. Firstly, a massive thanks to our coaches. Daryl Moss, in particular, put in countless hours at the beach. Our dedicated President, Steve Jewson, demonstrated what a fantastic all rounder he is in managing the club as well as taking a couple of sessions a week. Pete Currie was a real asset again and there are a couple of Victorian ski medals to prove what a help he’s been, along with Bruce Dunlop’s ex- pertise. Ian Blanchonette guided the runners and taught some of the water-based competitors how to get to and from the water’s edge more effi ciently while George Quine was invaluable in the pool competition and anything to do with belt and reel. Our trusty Competition Manager, John Prosser continued to nurture the swimmers and I can’t talk the Patrol Compitition and Champion Lifesaver leaders up enough as they have really excelled in every area, as demonstrated by Juc winning almost every category – well done, Dean Sibun, Dave Ulbrick and Luke Van Meel. Jan Juc is really unique in the depth, experience and dedication of the coaches and on behalf of all the competitors, thank you! This year has seen the entry of a whole new breed of cadets who braved the sometimes unforgiving Juc conditions at nightly training. There was a lack of senior competitors this year but Brian Lim and Will McCance in particular were fantastic fi gureheads. And lastly, thanks to everyone for being so wonderful and understanding of my transition into mother- hood. To Marianne Smith, Kate Redden and Cindy Reed, I can’t thank you enough for all your help looking after Jasmine while I coached. I really wouldn’t have been able to participate as much as I did without your help – and Jas loves you all! So, the coaching staff will be back to the drawing board to work out a strategy for the 2010/11 season. Stay fi t over winter and I look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and enthusiastic on the other side.

29 fundraising Peter Smith As our season winds to a close for season 2010 l would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your invaluable assistance during this season. The role of this position is to ensure the club has the fi nancial capacity to fund the various sections of the club. This season we set a wish list of raising $100,000 net after expenses. A big task but the aim is to build the reserves of the Jan Juc SLSC foundation - ensuring our core operation of beach patrol is adequately funded - and make provision for capital works on the clubhouse. While we did not achieve this goal we did raise $98,729 net! This has grown from $57,587 last year or 42%. A fantastic effort by all concerned and is testimony to the fantastic helpers and supporters our club has. From the nippers and SRC’s that help with the Door Knock to the tireless efforts of those who work on our major events, the hours spent shaking collection cans at the intersections of Torquay & Geelong to the individual’s that take it upon themselves to contribute in their own way, a MASSIVE thank you from myself, the Executive of JJSLSC and the Jan Juc Beach bathing public who you assist in keeping safe through serviceable equipment. Danger 1000 Ocean Swim & Bells Bash Cliff Run These events provide the club with a range of benefi ts - income and a wide sense of the whole club coming together...... an extremely hard but enjoyable weekend. Numbers were up again this year for the run with the swim numbers around the same as last year. The new Junior Juc Bash was deemed a success with close to 200 participants and we had some new sponsors join our existing loyal sponsors which was a good result. Flash & HT deserve a pat on the back for starting these events that make such a contribution to the club. Net income for the Danger 1000 increased 27% to $22,259 for 2009/2010 up from $16,149 for 2008/2009. Net income for the Bells Bash increased 40% to $17,391 for 2009/2010 up from $10,402 for 2008/2009. Bondo’s Golf Day What can be said about this Man or event only that it is Bondo. I do not have the fi gure that Bondo’s Golf Day has contributed to the club over the years it has been running but l am sure it is impressive. This year was again a great success and as always conducted with military precision by Bondo and his merry band of helpers. This raised 35% more than last year for 30 a Net income result of $11,579. Annual Door Knock Our Door Knock, geared toward our junior helpers as a path to assisting the club with fundraising, was participated in by all categories of members, it delivered $300 more than last year. Intersection Collections The Intersection Collections were identifi ed as a growth area for the club fundraising this year. They contributed 63% more than last year across the fi ve that were held. Season 2009/2010 Intersection Collections raised $34,886 as opposed to $12,962 for 2008/2009. A range of members assisted in raising in kind donations, and while these don’t contribute cash to the club they do save the club purchasing the donated items. The Jan Juc Surf Lifesaving Club is so fortunate to have a group of supporters & helpers that continu- ally contribute to the club’s progression in a positive way. Thanks to all those who have helped me in this role this year. sponsorship Peter Smith Sponsors RSMI Bird Cameron Westpac Banking Corporation New Zealand Steel Pty Ltd (Australia)

31 Firstly, congratulations to all those who received acknowledgement of years of patrol service medals. This year we had quite a few 15 years of service, two 25 years of service - Bruce Dunlop and Peter Smith, one 35 years of service - Ian Swan and, of course, 40 years of service from John Van Ooi. A separate article gives an insight into Ooi’s Club and Patrol History. Well done to all. This year we achieved 4,180 hours of patrolling and 595 hours of water safety, obviously a large com- mitment by members in protecting public beach users. We can all feel proud of our efforts in this regard. Unfortunately, for the fi rst time in over 35 years we were unable to award the Chris J Allen Trophy for the most effi cient patrol over the season, due to unforeseen circumstances. However, we were able to have two patrols tested by Life Saving Victoria in the State Competition and both received excellent inspections with no points deducted. We eagerly await the results of the State Competi- tion. To all Patrol Members who strive and train to be the best patrol, don’t be disheartened by this year. Next year, by hook or by crook, all Patrols will be inspected and the race for the “towels” will be on again. Judy Sedger has indicated that she will not be standing for the position of Finance Manager next season. We should be grateful to her in carrying out the position in such a magnifi cent manner. One again, Surf Life Saving Australia have updated and included new awards for the next season. I suggest that when the pre season courses are made available at the Club that you get in early. You are all aware of the dramas that exist at Requals when awards have to be updated when a large number of persons are present, so get in early. It is six months to the next season – enjoy the winter training. Hoo Roo for now. secretary Geoff Thompstone

32 As our club continues to develop its lifesaver training capabilities, administration continues to increase. One way to ease the burden of the administration of membership renewals or keep member details up to date is to encourage members to use the SLSA’s online facility, Lifesaving Online. Life- saving Online gives members instant access to all of their own personal club-related information. In the past, a club member would need to ask me to retrieve this information. As well as handling mem- bership requests and renewals, Lifesaving Online also gives access to all membership, award and patrol details associated with a member record. It can also connect with SLSA’s payment gateway

Jaci Chin-Jewson meaning you can apply for and pay to join a club completely electronically. If members need to know when they are next on patrol or simply change the mobile phone they have listed, they can log on at any time, access their data and make any changes required. This is extremely helpful in reducing the amount of administration required and also keeping all membership data up to date. Club hire continues to be in demand with school groups, social functions and weddings. During the off season we will be attempting to have some renovations completed, such as new carpet, a kitchen revamp and windows being repaired, to further enhance the appeal of our clubhouse to hirers. I must thank Deb Johnson for taking on the role of Bookings Offi cer for me. She communicates with the hirers and is excellent at giving wedding advice, which takes a bit of the load off me. Once again I have to thank Dean Sibun for being my emergency Mr Fix It and the Clubs website manager. He always knows the answers to my IT questions and basically keeps the Club online. Thanks Dean - I couldn’t do it without you. membership manager The Jan Juc SLSC membership numbers stayed fairly stable seeing a very slight rise from 657 in 2008/09 to 682 in 2009/10 and fees were made comparible with other clubs in our area. Over the past few years, Life Saving Victoria have been phasing in the Working With Children Check for all members over 18 years of age. Our club made a special application to LSV to make our Associate members exempt from this requirement, however I feel that they will enforce all members obtain- ing a WWCC next season. As the WWCC requirement creates many headaches processing mem- berships, the Club will be enforcing ALL members over the age of 18 have a WWCC and all nippers joining under a Family Membership so that we can have a record of parents and their WWCC. It is another piece of bureaucracy, however, the safety of our nippers and juniors is paramount. Most membership fees came in before the start of the season, however, we were still chasing memberships well into the season. It should be noted that our fi nancial year runs from 1st May to administration 30th April. Memberships next season will be due at the end of September to give the offi ce more processing time before the beginning of the patrol season. publication manager As Publication Manager, I produce all the Club’s publications, including the “Know Your Beach” brochures, the “Member Information” booklet, Bronze Camp and SRC information, etc. There is a lot of information there to get out to the membership which is continually changing and I will continue to try to keep everyone updated. I would like to thank Andrew Mather for, once again, taking on the role of Dune Editor and producing an excellent publication for the season. He has taken many thousands of photos of, not only nippers where his children are involved, but also other Club activities. It is great to have such a variety of photos to publish in our Annual Report.

dune editor - Andrew Mather This season, The Dune continued to provide valuable information to members, along with increased use of email and SMS. The club has actively encouraged members to receive their copy of The Dune electronically. As a result, printing and posting costs have halved compared with last year. Since every dollar spent has to be raised by members knocking on doors or shaking tins at intersec- tions, this is a signifi cant saving and one we hope continues into the future. The reduction in numbers has also been welcomed by the folding and labelling division (Rachel and David)! The other benefi t, of course, is that you get to see all those pictures in colour! I’d like to thank all those committee members who responded to my repeated nagging and pro- duced the content each month and those members who sent in photos and articles. I look forward to working with next year’s committee and all members to produce what I hope will continue to be an important source of information about what’s happening around the club. If you’re not already receiving your Dune electronically, I encourage you to do so and save a few trees, as well as some dollars.

It was a memorable homecoming sadly though for all the wrong reasons. In what can only be described as extremely challenging conditions a young lifesaver from NSW lost his life while competing in the U/19 Ironman heats on the morning of Friday, 19 March 2010. It was without doubt a tragedy and one that gave all the competitors, offi cials, coaches and sup- porters present cause to pause for a moment and refl ect on the raw and terrible power of the ocean. The remaining water events, almost the entire carnival, were swiftly postponed and ultimately can- celled. The beach and First Aid events continued. Until that time, Jan Juc had once again punched above its weight, particularly in the Lifesaving Events Area. On Tuesday, 16 March 2010, in very tough conditions, Jan Juc fi elded competitors in all bar two divisions of the Champion Lifesaver events. From Maddie McDonald in U/15 women’s event through to Steve Iannazzo in the open men’s race Jan Juc was well represented. A highlight being Dom White’s fi fth placing against strong competition. While the Champion Lifesavers were pitting themselves against the surf the Masters competitors were showing the young-uns that you’re never too old to have a go. In the boat section, the Fembots rowed into silver in the 140years women’s surf boat race. The following day was patrol competition day and Jan Juc fi elded and unprecedented two open teams and one U/17 team. It was the eighth outing in a row at Aussies for the open team and the second time Jan Juc has been represented by an U/17 team. The Open ‘A’ team were out to equal or better their third placing at Aussies 2009 while the ‘B’ team (which comprised the entire U/17 team plus two) were out to get the Aussies experience. The conditions were, again, trying. In the physi- cal events Christina Ruiz and Harriet Smith put in terrifi c board paddles and tube swims respectively. While Dean Sibun, swimming the fi ns, battled, ultimately successfully, against a seemingly relentless shorey. It was a day to be remembered. The entire U/17 team deserve special mention; they had barely fi nished the surf-teams component for the Open competition before the offi cials marched them to the start line for the U/17 surf teams race—less than 5mins rest between two very tough swims. In the end the Open teams placed 3rd and 6th and the U/17 team placed 6th. All in all it was a tremendously successful day out for the Patrol Teams, a big thanks to Wes McDonald who volun- teered to be a patient in the scenario and suffered heart attack after heart attack after heart attack, with varying degrees of treatment! Thanks Wes! Thursday dawned and the balance of the open carnival swung into action. The seas were still re- lentless, competitors facing big, messy and powerful surf. Jan Juc fi elded competitors in most age groups and most areas up and down the beach. At the beginning of the day the 2km runners found out just how hard soft sand can be to run on. James Quine and Cassidy Redden had a crack at a tough fi rst aid scenario before moving down the beach to compete in the U/17 taplin relay. However, the conditions were gradually worsening and in the junior areas the events fell far behind

38 aussies Kurrawa schedule as race after race struggled to get out through monster surf. The boat section was also struggling to complete races as the surf began to get thee upper hand. In the Open Men’s area the events were also taking longer to complete than the program had anticipated. However, amongst the carnage Will McCance put in a very good board paddle to progress through the fi rst round of the Open Men’s surf board race. By Friday morning the carnival offi cials had decided to move the juniors and boats to North Kirra where conditions were slightly less trying. Meanwhile back at Kurrawa the surf-belt races were post- poned due to conditions. Shortly before Saxon Bird’s disappearance Brian Lim fi nished 9th in his heat of the surf race which would have entitled him to race in the semi-fi nal. However, shortly after Limmy emerged from the surf tragedy struck and the carnival came to an abrupt and untimely halt. SLSA conducted a moving tribute to Saxon Bird on Saturday, 20 March 2010 before the land-based events resumed. In the beach area Molly Blanchonette progressed through to the fi nal of the U/17 sprint and to the second round in the Open women’s sprint. In the fi rst aid area Steve Iannazzo and Dave Ulbrick proved once again that they are dangerously underqualifi ed fi nishing ninth, narrowly ahead of Leigh Ryan and Luke Van Meel in tenth spot. Even though many events at the carnival weren’t run a huge effort was put in behind the scenes by our support team before anyone even left Victoria. So a huge thanks goes to Dean Sibun, Michael Keys, the Blanchonettes, the McDonalds, Scott Tannahill, the Reddens, George Quine and the Smiths. Without their efforts the competitors wouldn’t have even made it to the start line. Thanks guys! Counter Teas were well supported and the music and entertainment was a high- light. We enjoyed music by Tom Kline and Guthrie & Pastiche. Trivia Night - thanks to Andrew, Ann-Maree Sheridan and family for a great night. Thanks to the counter tea catering teams - The Legends Patrol and partners; Ex Presidents; Ian Ben- nett, Graham Kennedy, Rob Schofi eld, John Bleazby, Ray Edebone, Greg Touzel (Burger & Steak Nights; Ian Sedger and team for Danger Swim night; Terence Reed (Noodle Night) & Naomi Madigan (Pizza Night) Thanks also to the unnamed but much appreciated members who assisted with salads and espe- cially with the clean up in the kitchen following the counter teas. I would also like to thank the Bar Boys coordinated by Hawk who kept the bar stocked and served our needs. We may need to look at setting dates and opening times rather than checking to see if the fl ag is up. Next season I would like to see our competitors make more of a contribution to our counter teas. They could help by setting up tables, clearing plates and glasses from tables, washing dishes, and packing up tables and chairs at the end of the night. I also recommend that the club fund personnel to qualify in R.S.A. and S.F.H. to ensure consistency and to meet standards required. Two other social highlights run in conjunction with the local community were the bus trip to Minya Winery to see Spectrum and our Bare Foot Bowling night. We will plan to continue these activities next season. This year we decided to bring forward the date of the Presentation Night and I think the money used to assist in cost coverage was well spent. The new format of presentations, dinner and an excellent band helped fi nish the season on a high note. Finally I would like to thank the committee for their direction and support and I am prepared to stand as Social Functions Manager next year.

All divisions made a huge effort to keep their spending to a minimum. We also increased our membership fees and our entry fees for the Danger 1000 swim and Bells Bash Cliff Run. During the season we were successful in obtaining many new grants and some new sponsorship. Many members supported our intersec- tion collections, as well as all of our usual fundraising events. As a result, we fi nished the year with a very healthy bank balance. We have dedicated another $50,000 to the Jan Juc Foundation ac- count and set aside a further $50,000 for building improvements. The work on the clubhouse will be done over the winter period in time for next season. I would like to thank the many members who have helped make my role easier, and mostly a lot of fun. It is a privilege to work with such motivated and talented people. Thankyou all and see you finext season (onnance the beach!!). Judy Sedger

NOTES TO AND FORMING PART OF THE ACCOUNTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 APRIL 2010

NOTE 1 - STATEMENT OF ACCOUNTING POLICIES

These fi nancial statements are a special purpose fi nancial report prepared in order to satisfy the fi nancial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act Victoria. The committee has determined that the association is not a reporting entity.

The statements have been prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Associations In- corporation Act.

No other Australian Accounting Standards or other mandatory professional reporting requirements have been applied.

The statements are prepared on a modifi ed accrual basis of accounting. They are based on his- torical costs and do not take into account changing money values, or except where specifi cally stated, current valuations of non-current assets.

The following specifi c accounting policies, which are consistent with the previous period, have been adopted in the preparation of these fi nancial statements.

Fixed Assets Buildings are brought to account at cost or at independent valuation. As the building program has now been completed the building will be valued by an independent valuer.

Depreciation The depreciable amount of all fi xed assets are depreciated using the diminishing value method over the useful lives of the assets to the association commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use. The following table indicates the expected useful lives of non current assets on which the depreciation charges are based:

Buildings Up to 50 years Plant and equipment Up to 10 years Furniture and fi ttings Up to 10 years

Inventories

Inventories consist of clothing and bathers which are measured at the lower of cost and net realis- able value. Costs are assigned on a specifi c identifi cation basis and include direct costs and ap- propriate overheads, if any.
