Washington Flora Checklist A checklist of the Vascular Plants of Washington State Hosted by the University of Washington Herbarium The Washington Flora Checklist aims to be a complete list of the native and naturalized vascular plants of Washington State, with current classifications, nomenclature and synonymy. The checklist currently contains 3,929 terminal taxa (species, subspecies, and varieties). Taxa included in the checklist: * Native taxa whether extant, extirpated, or extinct. * Exotic taxa that are naturalized, escaped from cultivation, or persisting wild. * Waifs (e.g., ballast plants, escaped crop plants) and other scarcely collected exotics. * Interspecific hybrids that are frequent or self-maintaining. * Some unnamed taxa in the process of being described. Family classifications follow APG IV for angiosperms, PPG I (J. Syst. Evol. 54:563?603. 2016.) for pteridophytes, and Christenhusz et al. (Phytotaxa 19:55?70. 2011.) for gymnosperms, with a few exceptions. Nomenclature and synonymy at the rank of genus and below follows the 2nd Edition of the Flora of the Pacific Northwest except where superceded by new information. Plants of Hot Springs Valley and Grover Hot Springs State Park Alpine County, California Compiled by Tim Messick and Ellen Dean This is a checklist of vascular plants that occur in Hot Springs Valley, including most of Grover Hot Springs State Park, in Alpine County, California. Approximately 310 taxa (distinct species, subspecies, and varieties) have been found in this area. How to Use this List Plants are listed alphabetically, by family, within major groups, according to their scientific names. This is standard practice for plant lists, but isn’t the most user-friendly for people who haven’t made a study of plant taxonomy. Identifying species in some of the larger families (e.g. the Sunflowers, Grasses, and Sedges) can become very technical, requiring examination of many plant characteristics under high magnification. But not to despair—many genera and even species of plants in this list become easy to recognize in the field with only a modest level of study or help from knowledgeable friends. Persistence will be rewarded with wonder at the diversity of plant life around us. Those wishing to pursue plant identification a bit further are encouraged to explore books on plants of the Sierra Nevada, and visit CalPhotos (calphotos.berkeley.edu), the Jepson eFlora (ucjeps.berkeley.edu/eflora), and CalFlora (www.calflora.org). The California Native Plant Society (www.cnps.org) promotes conservation of plants and their habitats throughout California and is a great resource for learning and for connecting with other native plant enthusiasts. Chaenactis Douglasii (Hook.) Other Insect Species
Plant Guide Douglas’ dustymaiden can be used as part of a native DOUGLAS’ forb component in wildland seedings to increase biodiversity, improve wildlife habitat, and provide DUSTYMAIDEN food for numerous birds and mammals. Douglas’ dustymaiden is readily visited by pollinators and Chaenactis douglasii (Hook.) other insect species. It is considered an important Hook. & Arn. species for sage grouse during brood rearing because Plant Symbol = CHDO of its insect associations. Contributed by: USDA NRCS Idaho Plant Materials Ethnobotanic: Program Douglas’ dustymaiden was commonly used by Native Americans to treat a variety of health problems. A poultice of Douglas’ dustymaiden was used by Native Americans to treat swelling, sores and aches (Foster and Hobbs, 2002; Moerman, 1998). A tea made from the plant was used to slow heart rates in children (Foster and Hobbs, 2002; Moerman, 1998) and for indigestion and headaches. Description General: Sunflower family (Asteraceae). Douglas’ dustymaiden is a biennial or short-lived perennial forb developing from a basal rosette of grayish multi- lobed to lacey leaves. Ott Individualistic and Phylogenetic Perspectives on Plant Community Patterns (Under the direction of Robert K. Peet) Plant communities have traditionally been viewed as spatially discrete units structured by dominant species, and methods for characterizing community patterns have reflected this perspective. In this dissertation, I adopt an an alternative, individualistic community characterization approach that does not assume discreteness or dominant species importance a priori (Chapter 2). This approach was used to characterize plant community patterns and their relationship with environmental variables at Zion National Park, Utah, providing details and insights that were missed or obscure in previous vegetation characterizations of the area. I also examined community patterns at Zion National Park from a phylogenetic perspective (Chapter 3), under the assumption that species sharing common ancestry should be ecologically similar and hence be co-distributed in predictable ways. I predicted that related species would be aggregated into similar habitats because of phylogenetically-conserved niche affinities, yet segregated into different plots because of competitive interactions. However, I also suspected that these patterns would vary between different lineages and at different levels of the phylogenetic hierarchy (phylogenetic scales). I examined aggregation and segregation in relation to null models for each pair of species within genera and each sister pair of a genus-level vascular plant iii supertree. -

Mesler, Graduate Coordinator Date Jená Burges, Vice Provost Date ABSTRACT Floristic studies are especially timely since habitat loss is increasing dramatically. From the conservation perspective, it is imperative to document the distribution of plant species in areas that are floristically rich. For this study, I conducted a floristic survey along a 20-mile transect in the Horse Mountain, Grouse Mountain and Board Camp Mountain areas of Humboldt County, California. I also determined the phytogeographical affinities of the taxa I found and made comparisons between my flora and 11 other northwest California floras. Additionally, I made a comparison between my flora and the historical collection of Joseph Prince Tracy, a botanist who collected extensively in the same area during the early 1900s. I used an informal stratified sampling regime to cover the different vegetation types within the study area. Five hundred and forty-eight species were identified from 77 vascular plant families, including 18 California Native Plant Society listed taxa and 28 taxa endemic to northwest California.
