A very great deal has been accomplished as a private expedition, during spare time and on my own expences. I spent many lunchbreaks, nights, weekends, holidays and savings. Why is that, you ask? I am not quite sure. Was it because I wanted to stand up next to a mountain and chop it down with the edge of my hand? Or was it because I wanted to give something back to the world since that very world is giving so much to me? I don’t know. I forgot. I guess it’s not important anymore. What’s important is that the work is done… But I’ll be back, not to worry }:-) Don’t think that I would have accomplished this journey on my own. Not a chance! Yes, we survived the millennium bug. Actually, none of the predicted catastrophes occurred. As a matter of fact, we will probably never be able to prove what happened to us. Was it a giant hoax, or did a giant taskforce lead us into the new millennium? Anyway, as I walk into the dawn of this new era, I have to admit that it looks as if nothing has really changed in the first place. The birds are still singing, children are still playing outside and if I am lucky, my car won't give up on me today and my computer operating system will only crash four instead of six times within the next 24 hours. Nothing has really changed, huh? Who am I kidding? It seems to me that my natural habitat has changed completely! Why haven't I noticed! It is only five years ago that I logged onto the web for the first time! When I was a child, the only computer-like communication device around was my broken transistor radio which could easily pass for Spock's communicator at the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701! Nowadays, however, we are surrounded by computers and fat server-thin client components. We can go downtown and stick a telephone card into an Internet console at the post office to check our e-mail. We can even use our cellular phones for the same purpose. We communicate, socialise, co-work, learn and even make a profit via the Internet and the technology that surrounds it. However, as soon as there is a network-crash at the office, our work suddenly comes to a standstill. When virtual learning-spaces lack question- and-feedback features, we are no longer able to get a decent grip on our students’ learning results. And the moment the web site of our company crashes, its virtual front office no longer exists, and therefore the company doesn't exist - for a short period of time anyway. By inventing the Internet we created a Digital World that links individuals and groups such as companies together, no matter time or place. We not only created a new reality, but we changed the old reality as well. Almost no physical barrier, no national law or monetary system, no cultural set of values nor organisational rule or convention prohibits us from contacting a possible customer, competitor or fellow human being anywhere on this planet. However, it seems that the Digital World is now turning its back on us.

All Rights Reserved Abstract We believe that formal methods of all kinds are critical to mobile code security, as one route to gaining the assurance level necessary for running potentially hos- tile code on a routine basis. We begin by examining Java, and understanding the weaknesses in its architecture, on both design and implementation levels. Iden- tifying dynamic linking as a key problem, we produce a formal model of linking, and prove desirable properties about our model. This investigation leads to a deep understanding of the underlying problem. Finally, we turn our attention to crypto- graphic hash functions, and their analysis with binary decision diagrams (BDDs). We show that three commonly used hash functions (MD4, MD5, and SHA-1) do not offer ideal strength against second preimages. The ability of a cryptographic hash function to resist the finding of second preimages is critical for its use in digi- tal signature schemes: a second preimage enables the forgery of digital signatures, which would undermine confidence in digitally signed mobile code. Our results show that modern theorem provers and BDD-based reasoning tools are effective for reasoning about some of the key problems facing mobile code security today. iii Acknowledgments My advisor, Andrew Appel, offered sure guidance through what turned out to be an exceptionally smooth journey through graduate school.

Pierwotny zamysł systemu internetowych pomiarów obrazów fotogrametrycznych (SIPOF) zrodził się w projekcie badawczym prowadzonym w zespole dra hab. Zygmunta Paszotty, prof. UWM, na Uniwersytecie Warmińsko-Mazurskim w Olsztynie. Zasadnicze badania były realizowane w ramach studiów nad rozprawami doktorskimi autorów. Efekty badań zostały wdrożone w formie funkcjonującego systemu umożliwiającego realizację internetowych pomiarów na zdjęciach fotogrametrycznych nazwanego SIPOF. Referat jest skróconym przewodnikiem po systemie; prezentuje jego funkcjonalność oraz przedstawia możliwości wykorzystania w edukacji, nauce i gospodarce. SIPOF był prezentowany w ośrodkach edukacyjno-badawczych w Polsce oraz zagranicą i spotkał się z zainteresowaniem podmiotów gospodarczych. Komercjalizacja pracy naukowej zaowocowała dalszą koncepcją udostępniania fotogrametrycznych opracowań rastrowych jako nośników informacji kartometrycznej dla użytkownika specjalistycznego i masowego.
