AThe organization’s mission: to welcome and house people living in difficult circumstances.. Marie-Ève Barbeau, one of the farm’s team members, received me with the joy and passion that were already apparent when we spoke on the phone. Although the farm is nondenominational, it is in fact part of the network of Jesuit works in Canada. Firmly rooted in the Ignatian value of contemplation in action, it offers residents an opportunity to step back from their day-to-day routine and gain a new perspective on reality, a perspective that is perhaps more focused on the positive aspects of their lives. “We are women and men who value life above all,” says Michel Corbeil, SJ, one of the founders. “This includes all of us and implies an awareness of what is happening within and around us.” The Ignatian dimension of justice and ecology is also being lived on the farm.

The Jesuits were not surprised at this orientation since it resonates intimately with our current mission and the invitations for the future that we hear in our world. These preferences are the fruit of a patient discernment. We feel this resonance deep within us, touching what is already at the heart of our commitments, but also challenging what this mission is called to become. One can hear in them a certain tone, a way of listening to and embodying the Good News that Jesus proclaims. The specific Jesuit tone unfolds in the Church, and re- verberates in the midst of the world. It emanates from consecrated men, working in collaboration with many women and men of good will animated by the same rhythm. This music is made in solidarity with those to whom we are sent and with whom we join the dance. The dance calls forth exemplary witnesses, such as Father Pedro Arrupe, whose process of beatification has just begun, older companions from here and elsewhere, the young Jesuits, in formation or soon to be priests. The voice that guides us is that of Jesus, the Christ, on whom our eyes are fixed.

Also for decades, our Church has been living with painful cases of abuse within its ranks that erode the message of Jesus. Certainly, we cannot ignore anything that happens around us, but neither can we remain paralyzed. Our effort must continue to examine and detect sources of courage and consolation, beyond the dissonances we encounter, and to follow the call to be renewed. As I look at this magazine, I see the fruits of men and women, religious and lay, young and old, all united in one mission of reconciliation. They are the fruits of a Jesuit province that covers 9.98 million square kilometres, many languages and different cultures — Francophone, Anglophone, Indigenous — but also nourished by that of those who have and continue to arrive from dozens of countries around the world. This renewing spirit and energy toward our common mission can be felt throughout the pages. In this issue, we touch on several examples. From the testimonies of Mer et Monde interns working for international solidarity to the retreatants from Manresa in Ontario who experience various forms of personal growth (or simply rest!) to the faithful and long service of Jesuits like Julien Harvey or Jim Lefe- vbre, who have remained deeply committed to others, whether personally, communally or socially.

The thesis draws on the works of Gustavo Gutierrez and Aloysius Pieris, and argues that their soteriologies have a relevance that transcends the borders of Peru and Sri Lanka respectively. Their works inform a contemporary theological response by challenging the option for privilege, reconfiguring epistemic justice at the centre of social justice struggles, and confronting Eurocentric linear understandings of history as progress. The dissertation traces several expressions of the neoliberal project as these emerged in North America beginning in the 1980s, gives some examples of increasing popular resistance, and demonstrates ways in which the neoliberal project is theologically unacceptable. It brings Gutierrez and Pieris into conversation to show where their soteriologies provide direction for the development of theologies and movements for church renewal which challenge neoliberal globalization.
