The thesis draws on the works of Gustavo Gutierrez and Aloysius Pieris, and argues that their soteriologies have a relevance that transcends the borders of Peru and Sri Lanka respectively. Their works inform a contemporary theological response by challenging the option for privilege, reconfiguring epistemic justice at the centre of social justice struggles, and confronting Eurocentric linear understandings of history as progress. The dissertation traces several expressions of the neoliberal project as these emerged in North America beginning in the 1980s, gives some examples of increasing popular resistance, and demonstrates ways in which the neoliberal project is theologically unacceptable. It brings Gutierrez and Pieris into conversation to show where their soteriologies provide direction for the development of theologies and movements for church renewal which challenge neoliberal globalization. The project concludes ii with a discussion of the implications of these conversations for the contemporary Canadian context. The soteriologies of Gutierrez and Pieris demand not only the reconnection of theology and history, but also economics and history. They offer theological resources to challenge the Harper government’s attack on the Canadian women’s movement and its re-writing of Canadian history. Their theologies provide direction for the renewal of Catholic Social Teaching. They help us challenge contemporary Islamophobia by situating interreligious dialogue at the centre of the struggle for justice. Lastly, their works inspire us see the presence of the frontierless Christ in those persons and movements struggling against the hegemony of the neoliberal ‘Babel’ and working towards a new Pentecost where the Spirit of hope, compassion and solidarity, is recreating an alternative harmonious world enriched by many voices. iii Acknowledgments I am deeply grateful to the following people: Colleen, my wife and life partner whose commitment to “acting justly, loving tenderly and walking humbly with God” has been an inspiration to me for almost half a century.     Saugata Bhaduri Polycolonial Angst: Representations of Spain in Early Modern English Drama One of the important questions that this conference1 requires us to explore is how Spain was represented in early modern English theatre, and to examine such representation especially against the backdrop of the emergence of these two nations as arguably the most important players in the unfolding game of global imperialism. This is precisely what this article proposes to do: to take up representative English plays of the period belonging to the Anglo-Spanish War (1585–1604) which do mention Spain, analyse what the nature of their treat- ment of Spain is and hypothesise as to what may have been the reasons behind such a treatment.2 Given that England and Spain were at bitter war during these twenty years, and given furthermore that these two nations were the most prominent rivals in the global carving of the colonial pie that had already begun during this period, the commonsensical expectation from such plays, about the way Spain would be represented in them, should be of unambiguous Hispanophobia. There were several contextual reasons to occasion widespread Hispanophobia in the period. The revelation of this spiritual reality has a long history in the spiritual traditions, which has been perhaps most prolifically advocated by Ken Wilber (1995, 2000a), and fully explicat- ed by David Loy (1998). Nonetheless, these scholarly accounts of nondual reality, and the spir- itual traditions upon which they are based, either do not include or else misrepresent the reve- lation of a contemporary spiritual master crucial to the understanding of nondualism. Following Michael Lowy’s analytical and historical distinction between Liberation Christianity (emerging in the 1950s) and Liberation Theology (emerging in the 1970s), this paper seeks to problematize the historical projects of democracy and human rights, particularly in relation to the praxis of Liberation Christianity and the reflection of Liberation Theology. Liberation Theology emerged across Latin America during a period of dictatorship and called for liberation. It had neither democracy nor human rights as its central historical project, but rather liberation. Furthermore, Liberation Christianity, which includes the legacy of Camilo Torres, now seeks to ‘defend democracy’ and ‘uphold human rights’ in its ongoing struggles despite the fact that the democratic project has clearly failed the majority of Latin Americans. Both redemocratization and ‘pink tide’ governments were not driven by liberation. At the beginning of the first Workers’ Party government in Brazil, Frei Betto – a leading liberation theologian – famously quipped ‘we have won an election, not made a revolution’.
