glendowie news Friday, 14th October 2016 Kia Ora Welcome back to term four … a very busy term both as students focus on their academic studies Upcoming Events: and we celebrate students' achievements through 2016. October On Wednesday we enjoyed the annual Arts 14 Film Festival (Awards Evening) (7.30pm, Hall) Awards. The evening was a celebration of our students' talent and creativity. Congratulations to 15 GDC Rowing Ceilidh (Kay-lee) Fundraising Night (7pm, Hall) all of the students who won awards and/or who 19 Board of Trustees Meeting performed in the evening. A very big thank you (6pm) to the students and staff who put this evening together. It was a 20 Sports Awards Evening wonderful night. 24 Labour Day At assembly this week, my message was clear and simple. Students' 26 2017 Year 9 Testing Day primary focus this term is academic success. It's all about excellence. (8.15am) Olympic gold medallist, Mahé Drysdale, said that he had learned over his 27 Service Awards Assembly various regattas that the most important thing in achieving success is focussing on the process, not the outcome. On his technique, not the 27 Parents’ Association Meeting (7pm) medal. The same is true for our senior students. By now they should be into a November planned programme of study. All year 11, 12 and 13 students should 2 Senior Prizegiving know: (7pm, Hall) what … internal standards they have left to complete 9 NCEA Exams Start … external standards they will be sitting 15 Pacific Whānau Hui (6.30pm) … is the content of each external standard 22 Taurere Whānau (6.30pm) … she or he must do to get excellence or merit when … their exams are 23 Board of Trustees Meeting, (6pm) … they are going to study – each week and each night who … they will study with (friends and classmates) 23 Teacher Only Day … they can talk to (e.g. teachers) to help prepare a study 24 – 29 Junior Exams plan At this stage of the year, it's easy for senior students to worry about having too much to study and too little time to do it. That's worrying about the outcome. If that is your child, help him or her to work out how much time she or he has to study … and how much he or she will study each night through to the last exam. Help your child to focus on using their time effectively, and let the exam results take care of themselves. That's focussing on the process. The same is also true for junior students. All year 9 and 10 students will sit exams later this term. These are important to gauge how well students are learning this year, and to develop good study skills for year 11-13 and later at university. Our staff are here to help you and your child, so please contact your child's teachers or Dean if you would like information or assistance about studying effectively. Alice's team won the New Zealand National Waka Ama Championships in the Under-16 grade. This qualified the team for the World Competition at Lake Kawana on the Sunshine Coast in Australia in May of this year where Alice's team came third, taking a Bronze medal away for their effort. Alice is also involved in Athletics, especially field events including the discus, shot put and javelin. She was also Captain of the Year 9A Netball team this year. Gryffen and Tate King - Gryffen and Tate entertained the school when they demonstrated their Cup Stacking skills. Cup Stacking is a rather unique sport, that involves students stacking … and unstacking … empty upside down cups. It sounds simple, but is anything but. It requires a lot of agility and concentration. Gryffen and Tate are both part of the National Speed Stacking team – the Black Stacks. Both boys will travel to Taiwan next year to compete for New Zealand in an international competition. Gryffen and Tate also play a number of other sports including tennis, football and basketball. Jacqueline Cox - Jacqueline is a talented artist in year 12 who recently had her work accepted for the National Youth Art Awards. This national competition is prestigious, and being accepted to have your work presented there is an honour in itself. Jacqueline submitted some of her own painting for this award. Jacqueline is also involved in the wider life of the school, through her passion for German and helping with the costumes in this year's musical – ‘Blood Brothers’. The Glendowie College Big Band - On behalf of the Band, the two year 13 leaders of the group Emile Vreeburg and Alden Khoo received recognition.
