Welcome back to term four … a very busy term both as students focus on their academic studies Upcoming Events:

and we celebrate students' achievements through 2016. October On Wednesday we enjoyed the annual Arts 14 Film Festival (Awards Evening) (7.30pm, Hall) Awards. The evening was a celebration of our students' talent and creativity. Congratulations to 15 GDC Rowing Ceilidh (Kay-lee) Fundraising Night (7pm, Hall) all of the students who won awards and/or who 19 Board of Trustees Meeting performed in the evening. A very big thank you (6pm) to the students and staff who put this evening together. It was a 20 Sports Awards Evening wonderful night. 24 Labour Day At assembly this week, my message was clear and simple. Students' 26 2017 Year 9 Testing Day primary focus this term is academic success. It's all about excellence. (8.15am) Olympic gold medallist, Mahé Drysdale, said that he had learned over his 27 Service Awards Assembly various regattas that the most important thing in achieving success is focussing on the process, not the outcome. On his technique, not the 27 Parents’ Association Meeting (7pm) medal.

The same is true for our senior students. By now they should be into a November planned programme of study. All year 11, 12 and 13 students should 2 Senior Prizegiving know: (7pm, Hall)  what … internal standards they have left to complete 9 NCEA Exams Start … external standards they will be sitting 15 Pacific Whānau Hui (6.30pm) … is the content of each external standard 22 Taurere Whānau (6.30pm) … she or he must do to get excellence or merit  when … their exams are 23 Board of Trustees Meeting, (6pm) … they are going to study – each week and each night  who … they will study with (friends and classmates) 23 Teacher Only Day … they can talk to (e.g. teachers) to help prepare a study 24 – 29 Junior Exams plan At this stage of the year, it's easy for senior students to worry about having too much to study and too little time to do it. That's worrying about the outcome. If that is your child, help him or her to work out how much time she or he has to study … and how much he or she will study each night through to the last exam. Help your child to focus on using their time effectively, and let the exam results take care of themselves. That's focussing on the process. The same is also true for junior students. All year 9 and 10 students will sit exams later this term. These are important to gauge how well students are learning this year, and to develop good study skills for year 11-13 and later at university. Our staff are here to help you and your child, so please contact your child's teachers or Dean if you would like

information or assistance about studying effectively. R Dykes Principal

Head Prefects’ Breakfast

On Tuesday, 20th September our Head Prefects hosted a breakfast to acknowledge the following achievers:

 Alice Webster-McNamee – Alice has excelled in the sport of Waka Ama, or Outrigger Canoe Racing. Alice's team won the New Zealand National Waka Ama Championships in the Under-16 grade. This qualified the team for the World Competition at Lake Kawana on the Sunshine Coast in Australia in May of this year where Alice's team came third, taking a Bronze medal away for their effort. Alice is also involved in Athletics, especially field events including the discus, shot put and javelin. She was also Captain of the Year 9A Netball team this year.  Gryffen and Tate King - Gryffen and Tate entertained the school when they demonstrated their Cup Stacking skills. Cup Stacking is a rather unique sport, that involves students stacking … and unstacking … empty upside down cups. It sounds simple, but is anything but. It requires a lot of agility and concentration. Gryffen and Tate are both part of the National Speed Stacking team – the Black Stacks. Both boys will travel to Taiwan next year to compete for New Zealand in an international competition. Gryffen and Tate also play a number of other sports including tennis, football and basketball.  Jacqueline Cox - Jacqueline is a talented artist in year 12 who recently had her work accepted for the National Youth Art Awards. This national competition is prestigious, and being accepted to have your work presented there is an honour in itself. Jacqueline submitted some of her own painting for this award. Jacqueline is also involved in the wider life of the school, through her passion for German and helping with the costumes in this year's musical – ‘Blood Brothers’.  The Glendowie College Big Band - On behalf of the Band, the two year 13 leaders of the group Emile Vreeburg and Alden Khoo received recognition. Music is a major and successful part of Glendowie College. This year our various groups have performed, and excelled, in a range of events and competitions. The Big Band performed at the Rhapsody in Rotorua earlier this year, picking up awards there. Most recently the Band won a gold medal at the Auckland KBB Festival. This is a very high distinction.  Scott McKenzie - Scott McKenzie is a year 12 student who is a very talented 29ers sailor. 29ers are two-person high performance yachts that often act as a development pathway to 49ers which are the yachts that New Zealanders and Blair Tuke won gold in at this year's Rio Olympics. Scott competed in the World Championships in the Netherlands this year. Competing against adults, Scott won one race and came seventh in another. Given the highly competitive standard in sailing around the world, these were outstanding results.

 Alyssa Bullot - Alyssa is an outstanding, talented year 13 student who has excelled in her sport of running. This year Alyssa won in the Senior Girls' 3000m and also in the Senior Girls' 1500m at the Auckland Secondary Schools Championship. Alyssa was also the Senior Girls' Overall Champion at the Glendowie College Athletics Day. Alyssa has also competed nationally, and last year was part of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Road Race Team. Alyssa has also excelled in areas such as public speaking and leadership. At school she is the Sports Prefect, a role that she has done with excellence this year.

Our annual Leavers Concert was held on Tuesday, 20th September 2016. The concert is held each year to farewell our year 13 music students.

This year’s year 13 music leavers are pictured left.

THANKS FROM THE SALVATION ARMY

‘Last week we had the pleasure of meeting three highly inspirational girls from Glendowie College.

The Food Bank at the Auckland City Corps Mount Wellington Centre was at a very low level due to high demand in our area. With school holidays just around the corner and Christmas fast approaching it was fantastic timing for us that we were able to receive over one hundred cans of non-perishable food from Sophia Bower, Andi Ross and Erica Moss students from Glendowie College.

It is inspiring to see three young local leaders seeing a need in their greater community and making a plan to address the issue while not being afraid to roll their sleeves up and collect the cans for us.

They were a delight to meet and have signed up to volunteer in the food bank over the School holidays.

It is great to see youth taking action and inspiring us all while filling us with hope for the future generations.’

Year 13 Fun Day

The Year 13 students, Dean and form teachers enjoyed a day of fun on the last day of Term 3.

Friday 23rd September, the last day of term 3, was an opportunity for the year 13s to have some fun after a huge term and their mock exams. The year group dressed up in form class themes, some of which were inspired by their form teachers; MCK - Scottish theme; HEN - chefs; PVN - builders; as well as other beach, hippie and gangster themes. After a delicious sausage sizzle it was form class versus form class in a battle of year 9 inspired games such as Tug of War, Gold Rush, Speed Ball and the ultimate Sponge game. It was an amazing afternoon, with a huge amount of comradery and team work shown. Thanks for a lovely end of term Year 13! Our team this year comprised of Erin Abernethy, Ellissa Hunter, Sean Gibbs and Jordan Wilson. Overall results were exceptional for the team with two silver medals in the 4x50m Freestyle Relay and the 4x50m Medley Relay. The Star of the Year was Sean Gibbs (Year 9) who took medals in a number of events.

 1st - 50 Butterfly  1st - 50 Freestyle  1st - 100 Freestyle  2nd - 100 Butterfly  3rd - 50 Backstroke Jordan was able to secure a bronze medal in the 100m Butterfly and was happy with this after a period of being unwell and little training. He also placed in the top 10 in each of his other 6 events. Ellissa and Erin swam beautifully and had some excellent races, both were valuable team members when it came to the relay and enjoyed their weekend of racing. Glendowie College placed 16th out of 66 schools in the boys section with only 2 swimmers as opposed to the winners, Westlake Boys High School with 19 swimmers! Fiona Wilson (Jordan Wilson’s Mum)

Auckland Secondary Schools Road Running Championships

The Auckland Secondary Schools Road Running Championships were held on Tuesday, 20th September 2016. Congratulations to the following students on their exceptional results:

29er Sailing Success – Scott McKenzie

Three days after arriving in Medemblik – Scott McKenzie competed in the German Nationals. This was a four day regatta with 90 boats. Scott and his sailing partner (Seb) finished 8th overall. The sailors had 2 days rest before continuing with training in preparation for the Open Worlds. One of the rest days, the team spent an enjoyable day in Amsterdam.

The Open 29er World Championship was a gruelling 6 day and a marathon 20 races event, sailed in a mixture of very testing conditions. They had a record number of boats this year – 230 boats (29 countries). We are so, so proud that Scott finished 7th overall – this is EPIC considering that he and Seb have only been in this class of boat for about 8 months. Now Scott and Seb can sail with a Number 7 on their sail, as they are ranked 7th in the world now – amazing!

You can check out the final results here: http://www.29erworlds.org/index.php/event/results/finals/. These are the results from the final 10 races. The first 10 races are the Qualifying series – if you get in the top 50 – you make it into the Gold Fleet. Scott and Seb were placed 11th after 10 races. This score is then added onto the scores from the next 10 races (Final Series). There were a total of 9 NZ teams there – 3 teams made the Gold Fleet and nearly the rest in the Silver Fleet. Overall New Zealand performed very well.

Badminton

In the recent Auckland Schools Competition held over Term Two and Term Three we had five teams entered. Once again we had success. In Term Two our Senior A reserve team came second in their division and third overall. Our team could have been placed higher but we were unable to play one of the games due to another event. This was the first year that any of our teams had played in the A grade, and hopefully we can continue in this grade next year. The A team members were Aldric Khoo, Alden Khoo, Chris Hsueh and Frank Leng. Last year our B1 team won their grade (this years A grade). This year our B1 team were placed third, and our B2 team won their overall grade and will be receiving their medals shortly. Our C1 and C2 teams were placed in the middle of their divisions.
