Koch, 1841) (Theraphosidae, Aviculariinae) is a very rare, colorful and small tarantula found in the Atlantic Rainforest in Bahia and Sergipe. The original description of this species was based on a single female and no illustrations of reproductive organs were presented. After we collected several specimens identified as I. seladonium, we decided to redescribe this species and discovered that the male, previously described as belonging to this species, was misidentified by MELLO LEITÃO (1923). Thus, in this paper the male of I. seladonium is newly described and the reproductive organs of male and female are described and illustrated in detail. Notes on the behavior and natural history of I. seladonium are presented based on the observation of live specimens in the field and in captivity. An immature of I. seladonium was observed constructing a hinged retreat with silk and little pieces of bark, a behavior not previously seen for other Aviculariinae.

Highlights • We examined 363 published bites by theraphosid spiders on the incidence of skeletal muscle cramps in human bite victims • Muscle cramps were caused by Theraphosidae from Africa, Asia, Australia, North and South America • Highest incidence rates were recorded for theraphosid subfamilies Poecilotheriinae, Harpactirinae and Stromatopelminae • Subfamilies causing high muscle cramp incidence rates have a high likelihood of larger venom yields Abstract Despite the popularity of theraphosids, detailed reports on bite symptoms are still limited to few geographic regions and subfamilies. We therefore examined 363 published bite reports and noticed muscles cramps caused by theraphosids from nearly all continents and subfamilies. Symptoms are mostly locally restricted and mild, but 12.7% of victims experience pronounced cramps with highest incidence rates by Poecilotheriinae, Harpactirinae and Stromatopelminae subfamilies. Introdução A infraordem Mygalomorphae Pocock apresenta atualmente 16 famílias, 326 gêneros e 2709 espécies (Platnick, 2013), sendo constituída por aranhas caranguejeiras, aranhas-de- alçapão, aranhas-tecedoras-de-funil e outras sem designação popular (Coddington & Levi, 1991). O primeiro estudo filogenético para a infraordem foi realizado por Raven (1985), apresentando cladogramas de relacionamento entre todas as famílias, além de análise detalhada de cada família, com as relações obtidas entre subfamílias e gêneros. Esse trabalho é considerado bastante detalhado em bem elaborado, sendo o ponto de partida para a sistemática das aranhas migalomorfas (Coddington & Levi, 1991).

As 13 most spiders and all scorpions are venomous and due to their mostly negative image in the public 14 media, several governments are already considering introducing legislation to regulate the domestic 15 care of potentially dangerous captive animals. We aimed to investigate the circumstances and effects 16 of exposure to arachnids kept in captivity. Thus, we collected and analysed data from 354 self- 17 reported bites and stings attributed to pet arachnids. Our data revealed that on average there were 18 less than 20 recorded envenomations per year with ~90% preventable by due care. We also 19 categorized the severity of the resulting symptoms and found that the vast majority of symptoms 20 were either local (60.7%) or minor (32.8%), 5.4% were asymptomatic, only 1.1% were severe and no 21 fatalities were recorded. Based on our database of bite and sting reports, we performed a risk 22 assessment for arachnid pet ownership and concluded that, with the proper care, arachnids can be 23 safely kept as pets and pose a lower risk than many other recreational activities.

A new species of Tmesiphantes Simon, 1892 is described and illustrated, based on eight male specimens collected at the Una Biological Reserve, southern state of Bahia, Brazil. It is distinguished by the morphology of male palpal bulb and tibial apophysis. The new species is very small and is the smallest theraphosid described to date (body length 5.5 mm). It is distinguished from congeners by the size, which vary from 12 mm (T. riopretano) to 23.8 mm (T. nubilus) in other species of the genus, aspect of palpal bulb, sternal posterior sigillae close to sternal margin and by the aspect of tibial apophysis which lacks the prolateral branch. Tmesiphantes presently comprises nine species. Sixth have been described for the southern region of Bahia, a well known area of endemism in the Atlantic Forest. Identification keys for Tmesiphantes males and females are presented. KEY WORDS. Mygalomorphae; Neotropics; tarantula; taxonomy; Theraphosinae; Una Biological Reserve. Tmesiphantes comprises small to medium sized tarantula Tmesiphantes, emphasizing the morphology of the male palpal spiders, with labium and maxillae with few cuspules, rounded bulb and femur III incrassate as diagnostic features of the genus.

As most spiders and all scorpions are venomous and due to their mostly negative image in the public media, several governments are already considering introducing legislation to regulate the domestic care of potentially dangerous captive animals. We aimed to investigate the circumstances and effects of exposure to arachnids kept in captivity. Thus, we collected and analysed data from 335 reported bites and stings attributed to pet arachnids. Our data revealed that on average there were less than 20 recorded envenomations per year with ~90% preventable by due care. We also categorized the severity of the resulting symptoms and found that the vast majority of symptoms were either local (60.9%) or moderate (33.4%), 4.8% were asymptomatic, only 0.9% were severe and no fatalities were recorded. Based on our database of bite and sting reports, we performed a risk assessment for arachnid pet ownership and concluded that with the proper care arachnids can be safely kept as pets and pose a lower risk than many other recreational activities.
