    MICHEL TREMBLAY AUTEUR NOTES BIOGRAPHIQUES Figure dominante du théâtre québécois depuis la fin des années 1960, Michel Tremblay s'est aussi imposé comme romancier, traducteur, adaptateur et scénariste. Né dans un quartier populaire de l'est de Montréal, il découvre très tôt sa vocation d'écrivain. Dès ses études secondaires, il écrit des poèmes, des pièces de théâtre, des romans. À l’adolescence, il entreprend la rédaction de contes fantastiques qu'il réunit plus tard en un recueil : Contes pour buveurs attardés. À 18 ans, il s'inscrit à l'Institut des Arts graphiques, où il apprend le métier de linotypiste, qu’il exerce de 1963 à 1966. En 1964, Michel Tremblay soumet une pièce, Le train, au concours des Jeunes auteurs de Radio-Canada : il y remporte le premier prix. La même année, il rencontre André Brassard qui deviendra le metteur en scène de presque toutes ses pièces, jusqu’en 2003. En 1965, André Brassard utilise quelques-uns des Contes pour buveurs attardés dans un spectacle consacré à la littérature fantastique : Messe noire. La même année, Michel Tremblay écrit Les belles-sœurs. Après la lecture publique des Belles-sœurs le 4 mars 1968 au Centre d’essai des auteurs dramatiques, la pièce est créée au Théâtre du Rideau Vert, le 28 août 1968. Elle connaît alors un succès retentissant, au point d’avoir fait l’objet de près de 600 productions au Québec et à l'étranger. Écrites en joual, un registre de langue propre à Montréal, Les belles-sœurs donnent une vision renouvelée du quartier ouvrier où est né Tremblay.

    MICHEL TREMBLAY WRITER BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES Michel Tremblay emerged as a dominant figure of Quebec’s theatre world in the late 1960s. Since then, his considerable impact on French Canada’s thriving culture has broadened to include successful novels, translations, adaptations and screenplays. Born into an East Montreal working class neighbourhood, it soon became clear that Michel was also born to write. As a schoolboy, he was already composing poems, plays, and novels. The adolescent Michel wrote a series of fantasy stories that he later brought together in a collection entitled Contes pour buveurs attardés (Stories for Late Night Drinkers). At the age of 18, he enrolled at the Institut des Arts graphiques from which he qualified as a linotypist, a career that he pursued from 1963 to 1966. In 1964, Michel submitted a play, Le train, to a competition for young writers, Jeunes auteurs de Radio-Canada. He walked away with the First Prize. In that same year, he met André Brassard who would direct all Michel’s plays for the next 39 years. In 1965, André Brassard used some of the Contes pour buveurs attardés in a show, Messe noire, which drew on the fantasy genre for inspiration. It was also in 1965 that Michel wrote Les belles-sœurs. After a public reading of Les belles-sœurs, on March 4, 1968, at a venue for young playwrights, the Centre d’essai des auteurs dramatiques, Michel’s play was produced at the Théâtre du Rideau Vert on August 28, 1968. It was an instant and stunning success: so much so that there has been more than 600 productions both in Quebec since, and abroad.

    Introduction to Ecovenue Ecovenue is a signifi cant theatre-specifi c environmental project being run by The Theatres Trust. It aims to improve the environmental performance of forty-eight London theatres and raise awareness of how to make theatres greener. Ecovenue is promoting the sustainability of theatres and the reduction of carbon emissions through the provision of free theatre-specifi c, environmental advice. The project started in 2009 and runs until 2012. Forty-eight venues each undergo an Environmental Audit, and receive a Display Energy Certifi cate (DEC) and Advisory Report. They track their energy use through SMEasure. Each venue receives a second DEC a year after their fi rst to measure progress. Ecovenue includes a ‘DEC Pool’ of performing arts venues across the UK that have obtained DECs. The DEC Pool helps us to evaluate the project and share best practice and information, establish meaningful benchmarks, and provide a better understanding of energy use of theatres. Any theatre can join the DEC Pool. The Trust’s Theatres Magazine provides quarterly reports on the participants and the work of the Ecovenue project. The Theatres Trust Ecovenue project receives fi nancial support from the European Regional Development Fund. She works nationally in both the USA and the UK with a focus on developing new plays and installations for stage and public spaces. Her approach is collaborative, her aesthetic is light and flexible with a close attention to visual design and productions often incorporate original live music and rich choreography as narrative vehicles. Recent productions include Museum of Our Forgotten Selves (Cambridge/Coventry, UK), Throw Me on the Burnpile and Light Me Up and Be Here Now (Aurora Theatre, Atlanta), Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again (7Stages, Atlanta), Opera in the Shower (Works on Water, NYC and Art on the Beltline, Atlanta), The Drum Major Project (city- wide, Atlanta). Currently, Rachel is Artistic Director of the Little Five Arts Alive Creative Placemaking initiative, is Adjunct Faculty in the Center for the Study of Human Health at Emory University, serves on the Charting Board of the Little Five Points Alliance as well as on the Arts Advocacy Committee for C4 Atlanta. In the UK she is collaborating with arts and research partners to develop an interactive audio-adventure animating the inner life of infants for adult audiences. In NYC she is finalizing a multi-year project as Resident Artist at CUNY's Dispute Resolution Centre working with members of the New York Police Department’s Hostage Negotiation Team to develop an arts-based compassion-training course for police officers, with a book forthcoming in 2019.

Imogen Doel will lead the cast and has extensive experience in theatre, having previously performed in a number of West End productions, as well as multiple collaborations with Anthony Neilson. Muthy’s devastating exploration of patriotism and nativism in modern Britain follows young ex-soldier Grace as she struggles to reassimilate into society following a medical discharge from the army. Steiner’s first commission, and highly original new play will be the first major stage work around one of the most celebrated artists in popular music history, charting the second coming of global pop icon Kanye West.
