My Dear Friends,

As well as being a busy time with the Olympics, last week and this week are perhaps the busiest times of the year for holidays. When I lived in Wolverhampton at a time when heavy industry still existed in the West Midlands, these two weeks were known as Factory Fortnight. As a child our family would spend these two weeks in a small caravan on Anglesey in North Wales as my Dad, who was a pattern maker, had to have these two weeks off. Even when I left school and worked in a tyre factory, I also had to have these two weeks as my main holiday.

All the heavy industry of the West Midlands has gone, along with the tyre factory I used to work at (the largest employer in Wolverhampton), but with school holidays and the supposedly better summer weather, August is still the main holiday month.

As I said in my homily last Sunday, even though we may be on holiday, there are some things that we cannot get away from, such as being married or as parents; another is our faith. It is always important that when we go on holiday, we find where the nearest is so that we can fulfil our Sunday obligation. It is also a chance to meet fellow Christians!

As we are in a prime holiday area, we welcome all our visitors to our Churches and pray that they may have an enjoyable holiday, a safe journey and an enjoyable time with us whilst they are on holiday. With love and prayers, Fr. John
