    CHAPTER 1: Introduction ROBERT AUNGER A number of prominent academics have recently argued that we are entering a period in which evolutionary theory is being applied to every conceivable domain of inquiry. Witness the development of fields such as evolutionary ecology (Krebs and Davies 1997), evolutionary economics (Nelson and Winter 1982), evolutionary psychology (Barkow et al. 1992), evolutionary linguistics (Pinker 1994) and literary theory (Carroll 1995), evolutionary epistemology (Callebaut and Pinxten 1987), evolutionary computational science (Koza 1992), evolutionary medicine (Nesse and Williams 1994) and psychiatry (McGuire and Troisi 1998) -- even evolutionary chemistry (Wilson and Czarnik 1997) and evolutionary physics (Smolin 1997). Such developments certainly suggest that Darwin’s legacy continues to grow. The new millennium can therefore be called the Age of Universal Darwinism (Dennett 1995; Cziko 1995). What unifies these approaches? Dan Dennett (1995) has argued that Darwin’s “dangerous idea” is an abstract algorithm, often called the “replicator dynamic.” This dynamic consists of repeated iterations of selection from among randomly mutating replicators. Replicators, in turn, are units of information with the ability to reproduce themselves using resources from some material substrate. Couched in these terms, the evolutionary process is obviously quite general. for example, the replicator dynamic, when played out on biological material such as DNA, is called natural selection. But Dennett suggests there are essentially no limits to the phenomena which can be treated using this algorithm, although there will be variation in the degree to which such treatment leads to productive insights. The primary hold-out from “evolutionarization,” it seems, is the social sciences. Twenty-five years have now passed since the biologist Richard Dawkins introduced the notion of a meme, or an idea that becomes commonly shared through social transmission, into the scholastic lexicon.

    CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE Together “Since we are all one body in Christ, we belong to each other and each of us needs all the others” (Romans 12:5) British Isles – – – SUMMER 2010 ASSEMBLY REPORTS District Assemblies were held over the weekend 12th-15th March in Morley and Paisley. South District Superintendent, Rev David Montgomery, brought his first report to the Assembly with the challenge to “…remain in Christ”. As Jesus said, “…if a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit…” (John 15:5). Special features of the assembly were the times of prayer for each pastor, and a question and answer session with members of the District Advisory Board. A weekend of Conventions and Rallies characterised the North Assembly, Times of Prayer at the South Assembly which followed the theme, The Church in Community, Evangelism, Worship, & Mission. Rev Colin H. Wood, brought his 18th report as District Superintendent and recognised the great need for God’s Spirit to move in the land and across the district, and that God’s Call would come to many to offer themselves for the pastoral ministry. Geertz Religion, Cognition and Culture Research Unit (RCC), Department of the Study of Religion, Aarhus University, Denmark [email protected] Abstract This essay sketches out a biocultural theory of religion which is based on an expanded view of cognition that is anchored in brain and body (embrained and embodied), deeply dependent on culture (enculturated) and extended and distributed beyond the borders of individual brains. Such an approach uniquely accommodates contemporary cultural and neurobiological sciences. Since the challenge that the study of religion faces, in my opinion, is at the interstices of these sciences, I have tried to develop a theory of religion which acknowledges the fact. My hope is that the theory can be of use to scholars of religion and be submitted to further hypotheses and tests by cognitive scientists. Keywords biocultural theory, embrainment, embodiment, enculturation, extended mind, distributed cog- nition, neuroscience, religion Introduction At the Religion, Cognition and Culture Research Unit (RCC) in Aarhus, our central axiom is that cognition is not just what goes on in the individual mind. Beginning on Monday, March 30, the public media WORLD Channel from WGBH will provide a daily, five-hour At-Home Learning Service, for students in grades 6-12, to PBS stations nationwide. From 12 noon – 5 pm EDT weekdays, WORLD will offer programs on science, history and English language arts, and include related learning resources from PBS LearningMedia, a free online service of thousands of educational resources. (Check local listings for channel information and times.) “With WORLD channel available free over the air, these educational programs can reach all families, including those who do not have internet access or computers at home,” said Liz Cheng, general manager of television at WGBH and WORLD Channel. “We are proud to work with PBS stations across the country to make this service widely available.” The new broadcast programming will be supplemented with additional resources from PBS LearningMedia, which is partnering with the WORLD Channel. The resources in PBS LearningMedia, which were developed based on feedback from educators, are aligned to curriculum standards in every state and contextualized for educational use. These resources include grab-and-go activities, lesson plans, interactive lessons, and media that illustrate specific topics or themes and support materials across subjects.
