1 Greetings from the President

February 24, 2014

Greetings, As the Ninth President of this celebrated institution, I want to personally welcome you to the 31st Annual Career and Energy Day Scholarship Awards Luncheon for our Cooperative Developmental Energy Program (CDEP).

Our university’s rich heritage and diverse scholarly pursuits include a commitment to supporting the intellectual activities of academically talented students. We are especially proud of achievements in making a profound impact within the energy industry and its related fields, with outstanding input by minority and women students.

Each year, we pause to celebrate the successes realized through this trailblazing academic and mentoring program that provides opportunities for some of the nation’s best and brightest science, technology, engineering, and mathematics scholars. I am grateful to CDEP faculty and staff and their supporters, who continue to enable students to realize their dreams, which is at the heart of what we Dream and Do daily at Fort Valley State University.

Special plaudits are extended to CDEP’s founder, Dr. Isaac Crumbly, who in 1983 recognized the need to introduce the nation’s energy leaders to the intellectual vitality of FVSU’s student scholars and provide opportunities for student engagement and internship opportunities.

This program has grown and expanded over the years to include other universities seeking to realize similar goals. These include the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Texas-Austin, University of Arkansas, Pennsylvania State University, and the University of Texas-Pan American.

Now, through these partnerships, our students are able to enjoy a dual-degree component, which enables them to earn two bachelor’s degrees: one from a science-related field at FVSU, and one from an energy-related field from a partner school.

Finally, let me thank and congratulate the individuals, companies, agencies, and foundations for providing ongoing support to this valuable program. Our educational enterprise is richer because of your involvement and commitment.

Keep on keeping on!

Sincerely,

Ivelaw Lloyd Griffith, Ph.D. President Fort Valley State University 478.825.6315 or 478.825.6316 • Fax 478.825.6266 An Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action Institution 2 The Cooperative Developmental Energy Program The Only One of Its Kind In the Nation

Greetings to Everyone!

I join President Ivelaw Lloyd Griffith in welcoming you to the campus of The Fort Valley State University and to the Cooperative Developmental Energy Program’s Annual Energy Career Day and Student Recruitment Conference. We are indeed Dr. Isaac J. Crumbly thankful and humble that you would take time out of your busy schedules to honor us Associate Vice President for Careers and with your presence. You are our guests; and if there is anything we can do to make your Collaborative Programs and CDEP stay more enjoyable, please let us know. Founder and Director

As we mark CDEP’s thirty one years of existence, I am grateful to so many individuals who have supported CDEP students and its staff. I am thankful to our partnering corporations and governmental agencies for providing funds to support student scholarships, internships, and research experiences. Also, I extend my sincere appreciation to our six partnering universities, namely, Georgia Institute of Technology, Pennsylvania State University, The University of Arkansas, The University of Nevada at Las Vegas, The University of Texas at Austin, and The University of Texas - Pan American. Our partnering universities not only award the engineering, geology, geophysics, and health physics degrees in CDEP’s dual degree programs, they also provide students with cutting-edge research experiences, including international research opportunities.

Congratulations to the many students who have completed CDEP’s dual degree programs and who are now successful engineers and scientists in the STEM workforce. CDEP is an accelerated and intense dual degree program that must be navigated in five years. Therefore, to the CDEP graduates, I commend you for your perseverance, commitment to excellence, and staying the course.

It is with pleasure and pride that I inform you that CDEP and its partnering universities have graduated 81 engineers, 31 geoscientists, and 8 health physicists. Also, I am delighted to report that dozens of CDEP’s graduates are now employed in the oil and gas industry and the electric and natural gas utility industries. Thanks to many partners and supporters, CDEP has become a national leader in providing access to underrepresented minorities and women to STEM careers in the energy industry.

Again, greetings to everyone and I extend my sincere thanks to each of you for your attendance.

Isaac J. Crumbly

3 The Cooperative Developmental Energy Program Dr. Isaac J. Crumbly, Founder and Director

Fort Valley State University has the distinction of having the nation’s only Cooperative Developmental Energy Program (CDEP). On July 1, 1983, Dr. Isaac J. Crumbly founded CDEP with start-up funds from the U.S. Department of Energy. CDEP is an innovative energy education program that focuses on increasing the number of minorities and women working in the private and governmental sectors of the energy industry. The objective of CDEP is to develop a long-term, mutually beneficial relationship between Fort Valley State University and the nation’s energy industry in creating a technology oriented labor base for minorities and women. This objective is accomplished through the following methods:

• Dual degree programs in engineering, geosciences, and health physics • University partners • Scholarships • Internships • Pre-College Programs • Corporate & Government Collaboration • Career/Job opportunities

Scholarship Application Requirements (Competitive) • 3.5 GPA or above • Official high school transcript (1st semester grades from 12th grade must be included in transcript) • Two letters of recommendation • Combined math and critical reading SAT score of 1100 (minimum 550 math) or a composite score of 26 on the ACT • Complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) - www.fafsa.ed.gov Note: FVSU’s Federal School Code, 001566, should be listed in section 8 • Complete the Fort Valley State University Application for Admission – www.fvsu.edu • Complete the HOPE Application (Georgia students only)

In addition to completing the FAFSA, applicants must apply and be accepted into FVSU to be considered for a CDEP scholarship.

12 Cooperative Developmental Energy Program Joseph Huffstetler Award

The Huffstetler Award is given in the memory of the late Joseph Huffstetler. Mr. Huffstetler was a recruiter in the 1980’s for Occidental Petroleum Company and was instrumental in introducing Dr. Isaac Crumbly to the University of Oklahoma’s College of Geosciences and several oil and gas corporations. As a result of Mr. Huffstetler’s introductions, Fort Valley State University and the University of Oklahoma subsequently offered dual degrees in geology and geophysics and CDEP formed partnerships with more than twelve major oil and gas companies. This award is given to an individual(s) whose support for CDEP emulates that of the late Joseph Huffstetler. This year, the Cooperative Developmental Energy Program salutes Dr. Misha Lesley for her outstanding leadership and support of CDEP.
