Our university’s rich heritage and diverse scholarly pursuits include a commitment to supporting the intellectual activities of academically talented students. We are especially proud of achievements in making a profound impact within the energy industry and its related fields, with outstanding input by minority and women students. Each year, we pause to celebrate the successes realized through this trailblazing academic and mentoring program that provides opportunities for some of the nation’s best and brightest science, technology, engineering, and mathematics scholars. I am grateful to CDEP faculty and staff and their supporters, who continue to enable students to realize their dreams, which is at the heart of what we Dream and Do daily at Fort Valley State University. Special plaudits are extended to CDEP’s founder, Dr. Isaac Crumbly, who in 1983 recognized the need to introduce the nation’s energy leaders to the intellectual vitality of FVSU’s student scholars and provide opportunities for student engagement and internship opportunities. This program has grown and expanded over the years to include other universities seeking to realize similar goals. These include the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Texas-Austin, University of Arkansas, Pennsylvania State University, and the University of Texas-Pan American. Now, through these partnerships, our students are able to enjoy a dual-degree component, which enables them to earn two bachelor’s degrees: one from a science-related field at FVSU, and one from an energy-related field from a partner school. Finally, let me thank and congratulate the individuals, companies, agencies, and foundations for providing ongoing support to

Georgia Department of Community Affairs 2017 Funding Application Housing Finance and Development Division Project Narrative Vallihi Apartments Fort Valley, Peach County Fort Valley Historic High School is a contributing building in the Everett Square Historic District in Fort Valley, Georgia. This proposed project is a historic preservation/adaptive reuse project to convert the historic high school to apartments for seniors. The tenancy of Vallihi Apartments will be Housing For Older Persons. The project design will include 56 one and two bedroom adaptive reuse units to be located entirely in the two- story school. Elevators will be provided. Fifty units will be reserved for residents at 50% and 60% AMI with the remaining six units available as market rate units. The market study supports a need for senior, affordable housing in Fort Valley. The last DCA project funded in Fort Valley was a family project in 2013. This 2013 project currently has a waiting list. A partnership has been formed with a Community Quarterback to implement a Community Transformation Plan to benefit the residents of Vallihi Apartments as well as the surrounding neighborhoods. The local government has expressed considerable support for the adaptive reuse of the historic school as well as the transformation plan. Healthy Housing Initiatives will be employed at the development to encourage better health outcomes for our senior residents. The school has been vacant 45 years with the exception of a small portion of an annex addition currently housing some Peach County Board of Education offices. The Peach County Board of Education, as owner of the annex, will vacant the offices upon sale of the property.
