Harewood Speed Hillclimb TRAN-X BRITISH HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING Sunday 6th July 2003 BIG HITTERS The use of superlatives to describe this meeting is totally inadequate. We have a fantastic entry of Tran-X MSA British Hillclimb Championship contenders. At our last British Championship event, two drivers were under the existing Course Record. Exceedingly impressive, Adam Fleetwood is new to large single seaters this season but that was no banierto him undercutting the previous record by 0.62s. The Telford man driving his 3300cc Gould GR55 set a scintillating new record but the 2002 National Champion, Graeme Wight Junior, was also under the course record. These two look set for a season-long battle for the British Hillclimb Championship, but don't write off last year’s No 2 Tim Mason. At the May 11th Harewood round Adam's delight at the neW course record was damped by him hitting the scenery and damaging the Gould so the stage is set for a return match of these two highly skilled protagonists. Championship second place man Tim Mason should be among the podium men but not if the likes of past champion Roger Moran and Simon Durling, who will be leading the chase in the Impressive 26 car class, have any say. Many of the drivers will be driving cars with over 600 brake horse power under their right foot. To set a quick time on the narrow and twisting Harewood track requires great skill and determination. In the smaller capacity classes, 2000cc Dallara F394 driver Ben Butterfield holds a very impressive 5th place in the Championship while fellow Class K driver Trevor Willis in the QMS is presently 6th overall, showing the ability and commitment of the drivers. Heading the class related Leaders Championship after round 8. in the lead is Mark Budgett in the 1080cc Force, who has Graeme Wight Jnr close behind. In 3rd place is Mark Goodyear in the Vision V86 Hillclimb Supersports and joint 4th are Ben Butterfield (2000cc Dallara) and Adam Steel (600cc Martlet). Many of the country's top speed hillclimbers are present and given good weather could set new class records. The event is the 5th round of the keenly contested Harewood Hillclimb Championship. Local Harrogate man Mike Geen in his Class 1 1400cc Peugeot 205 heads the leader board fi-om his near neighbour James Blackmore in the 1370cc QMS. Dale Cordingley in the 1600cc Caterham is 3.68 points behind the championship leader.
