Rearticulations of Enmity and Belonging in Postwar Sri Lanka
BUDDHIST NATIONALISM AND CHRISTIAN EVANGELISM: REARTICULATIONS OF ENMITY AND BELONGING IN POSTWAR SRI LANKA by Neena Mahadev A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland October, 2013 © 2013 Neena Mahadev All Rights Reserved Abstract: Based on two years of fieldwork in Sri Lanka, this dissertation systematically examines the mutual skepticism that Buddhist nationalists and Christian evangelists express towards one another in the context of disputes over religious conversion. Focusing on the period from the mid-1990s until present, this ethnography elucidates the shifting politics of nationalist perception in Sri Lanka, and illustrates how Sinhala Buddhist populists have increasingly come to view conversion to Christianity as generating anti-national and anti-Buddhist subjects within the Sri Lankan citizenry. The author shows how the shift in the politics of identitarian perception has been contingent upon several critical events over the last decade: First, the death of a Buddhist monk, which Sinhala Buddhist populists have widely attributed to a broader Christian conspiracy to destroy Buddhism. Second, following the 2004 tsunami, massive influxes of humanitarian aid—most of which was secular, but some of which was connected to opportunistic efforts to evangelize—unsettled the lines between the interested religious charity and the disinterested secular giving. Third, the closure of 25 years of a brutal war between the Sri Lankan government forces and the ethnic minority insurgent group, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), has opened up a slew of humanitarian criticism from the international community, which Sinhala Buddhist populist activists surmise to be a product of Western, Christian, neo-colonial influences. -
Guardians of Childhood
Guardians of Childhood: State, Class and Morality in a Sri Lankan Bureaucracy Harini Amarasuriya PhD. The University of Edinburgh and Queen Margaret University 2010 Declaration I declare that this thesis has been entirely composed by me and is my own original work with acknowledgement of other sources, and that the work has not been submitted for any other degree or professional qualification Signed: Date: Dedication For my parents: for their love, support and for allowing Pippin to take over their home (and lives) during my long absences Abstract This thesis explores the everyday practices, relationships and interactions in a Probation Unit of the Department of Probation and Child Care Services in the Central Province in Sri Lanka. Using multi-sited ethnography and the ethnographer’s own experiences in this sector it examines how frontline workers at the Probation Unit engage and draw upon international and national development discourse, ideas and theories of children and childhood to engage with colleagues and clients. This thesis takes as its analytical starting point that state agencies are sites where global development discourse meets local practices. Simultaneously, they are sites where ideas and practices of nationalism, class, morality and professional identity are produced and reproduced. State sector employment is an important source of social mobility, gaining respectability and constructing a middle class identity. Thus, maintaining the ‘in-between’ position in relation to the upper and lower classes is an especially anxiety-ridden and challenging process for state bureaucrats. This shapes the particular characteristics of their nationalism, morality and professional identity and influences the way in which they translate policies and engage with institutional and bureaucratic procedures. -
Prevalence of Mycoplasma Pneumoniae Infection in Patients
Relativism based on Buddhist epistemology J. A.D.F.M. Jayatilleke Department of Philosophy, University of Kelaniya. ABSTRACT The resurgence of relativism in Western philosophy occurred in the 1960’s through the works of the American philosopher of science Thomas Kuhn. Two important concepts introduced by Kuhn, namely ‘Paradigm’ and ‘Incommensurability’ led to the logical conclusion that theories have only relative validity. But Kuhn hesitated to be branded as a relativist. Kuhn was severely criticised by the contemporary scientists and philosophers for leading science, thereby knowledge, towards relativism. Very few contemporary philosophers of Kuhn, namely, Paul Feyerabend, Nelson Goodman, Joseph Margolis, Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela openly defended relativism of knowledge. Most of the western philosophers and scientists could not accept relativism of knowledge because of their deep rooted belief that there is a world out there independent of us. In other words the majority of western philosophers and scientists believe in a reality independent of human beings. According to them, cognition is the representation of the world ‘out there’. Even some of the philosophers who reject this representational view of the world ‘out there’ do not accept relativism. They prefer to call them pragmatists. There are few philosophers and scientists who openly embrace relativism. Philosophers like Feyerabend, Goodman, Margolis and scientists like Maturana,Varela belong to this category. According to the two scientists (as well as philosophers ) Maturana and Varela, cognition is not a representation of the world ‘out there’ but rather an ongoing bringing forth of a world through the process of living itself. Both of them were colleagues at the University of Chile. -

Pluralism: Research Methodology for Social Sciences
International Journal of Science and Research (IJSR) ISSN: 2319-7064 Index Copernicus Value (2016): 79.57 | Impact Factor (2017): 7.296 Pluralism: Research Methodology for Social Sciences MM Jayawardena1, WAAK Amaratunga2 PhD (Colombo), MA (Peradeniya), BA Hons in Economics (Peradeniya), Dip in Psychology and Counseling (SLNIPC) and MPhil (Kelaniya),MA in Linguistics (Kelaniya), BA Hons in English (Peradeniya), Faculty of Management, Social Sciences and Humanities, General Sir John Kotelawala Defense University, Sri Lanka Abstract: Social sciences include a variety of important subjects related to human behavior, and the knowledge in social sciences matter in day to day human activities both at micro and macro levels, though it is not as precise as that of natural sciences. Partly as a result of this, knowledge construction in social sciences needs to link up with philosophical roots while addressing on appropriate methodology. Generally, the subject matter investigated in social sciences is multidisciplinary in nature because of the multiple linkages of factors of a selected social issue. In order to carry out a research on a selected topic, there is a need to address on different methodologies and methods to analyze and assess identified dimensions of the issue. Without a holistic understanding of many facets of the evolving process related to the issue and their interaction with one another, selecting an appropriate methodology and dealing with different dimensions of the problem is difficult. Therefore, a model to bridge knowledge gaps in the evolving process and their retrospective and prospective linkages with objectivism and subjectivism in relation to different paradigms, i.e. positivism, interpritivism, radical humanism and radical structuralism with a focus on pluralism, is important in identifying the scope of a social science research. -

Buddhism, Conflict and Violence in Modern Sri Lanka
BUDDHISM, CONFLICT AND VIOLENCE IN MODERN SRI LANKA Buddhism, Conflict and Violence in Modern Sri Lanka explores dilemmas that Theravada Buddhism faces in relation to the continuing ethnic conflict and violence in recent decades. In this book, prominent scholars in the fields of anthropology, history, Buddhist Studies and Pali examine multiple dimensions of the problem. It discusses in detail various Buddhist responses to the crisis and suggests ways how resources found within Buddhism and Buddhist institutions can help create peace in Sri Lanka. Evaluating the role of Buddhists and their institutions in bringing about an end to war and violence, this collection puts forward a critical analysis of the religious conditions contributing to continuing hostilities. Mahinda Deegalle is Senior Lecturer in the Study of Religions at Bath Spa University. His research interests are Buddhist Preaching, Mahayana Buddhism in Sri Lanka and Violence and Peacebuilding. He is the co-editor of Pali Buddhism (Curzon, 1996), and is currently researching on Buddhist monks’ involvement in Parliamentary Politics. ROUTLEDGE CRITICAL STUDIES IN BUDDHISM General Editors: Charles S. Prebish and Damien Keown Routledge Critical Studies in Buddhism is a comprehensive study of the Buddhist tradition. The series explores this complex and extensive tradition from a variety of perspectives, using a range of different methodologies. The series is diverse in its focus, including historical studies, textual transla- tions and commentaries, sociological investigations, bibliographic studies, and considerations of religious practice as an expression of Buddhism’s integral religiosity. It also presents materials on modern intellectual historical studies, including the role of Buddhist thought and scholarship in a contemporary, critical context and in the light of current social issues. -

R. Jathika Chinthanaya: History and Political University of Colombo Significance [email protected] [email protected] Abstract This essay reviews the history of the intellectual discourse known as Jathika Chinthanaya in Sri Lanka. This discourse emerged in the Sinhala-Buddhist south of Sri Lanka as a left-oriented intellectual movement and soon transformed into the intellectual front of extreme Sinhala-Buddhist ethno-nationalism. The central problem addressed in this essay is how the movement shifted away from its initial promise to overcome the limits of Marxism and propose an alternative vision to the existing capitalist economic and social order to become instead the intellectual front of Sinhala- Buddhist nationalism. This problem is investigated through a historical analysis of the evolution of the Jathika Chinthanaya discourse in its first two decades. The essay argues that the key to understanding the history of the movement, particularly the deviation from its left leanings towards an extreme form of ethno-nationalism, is to look at the problem in terms of the way in which it responded to the broader political and ideological circumstances in the Sinhala-Buddhist south in the period under review. -
