Beth Gersh-Nesic, Ph. D First Thursday of the Art History Seminar and Director of The New ACS Month • 11:00 am York Arts Exchange May 3 - Picasso’s Blue and Rose Periods Continuing from our last lecture on Picasso’s formative years, we learn about Picasso’s two first major periods: The Blue Period and The Rose Period. Living in Barcelona and traveling to Paris, the young Spanish artist discovers the avant-garde art world. Finally he has to make a choice between building a reputation in his home country or moving to France to further his career. He moves to Paris and embraces the Post- Symbolism of his new friends, the poets.

June 7 – The Cubist Revolution When Picasso was in the midst of his Rose Period, he discovered African art. He and his artist friends admired Paul Cézanne’s art too. Together, Picasso and his close friend Georges Braque synthesized these two influences, adding the desire to show how they saw objects in space and time. The result was called “Cubism” by the critics. This slide lecture also discusses the other Cubists: Albert Gleizes, Fernand Léger, Juan Gris, etc.

July 5, 2018 – Early Modernism in America- From Ashcan to Georgia O’Keeffe While European artists were eager to invent new forms in art, American artists focused on American urban and rural scenes. They looked past the elegance of the late 19th-century Genteel Style that described opulence and splendor, choosing instead the mundane habits of the less well-to-do. We look at artworks by the Ashcan School, the Regionalists and the Stieglitz Circle, including Georgia O’Keeffe.

August 2, 2018 – Dada and Surrealism Dada emerged during World War I (1914-1918). It was an anti-art, eager to “break all the rules.” Surrealism followed in the 1920s, absorbing most of the Dada artists. They continued to explore the boundaries of art-making and subjects with the help of Freud’s theories.

Fashion Through the Second Thursday of the Chermeine Conteh AS Decades Month • 4:15 pm Think back to a special event that you attended years ago. Whether it be your senior prom, wedding, picnic or graduation, do you remember what you wore? How did you do your hair ? What shoes were you wearing? I think for most of us, especially the women, we can all agree that fashion certainly does change over time. For instance, in the 20's, women began flaunting their legs in short flapper dresses. In the 40's, men wore big, plaid, and loose suits. In the 60's, men grew their hair out and the women flaunted what was called the beehive hairstyle. The 80's went through a HUGE fashion alteration - big hair, lots of hairspray, tight spandex, bright patterns and mini skirts. Come to Chermeine's class every month to learn more about each decades fashion trends, and then reminisce about your favorite outfits throughout the years. If you are brave enough, feel free to bring pictures to show off your oh so fabulous wardrobe.

Proponents of the CDC believe that the shots will strengthen a child's immune system when faced with a life threatening illness such as small pox, polio or whopping cough. On the other hand, opponents see these injections as harmful and unknown substances that are disrupting the natural order of their child's immune system. Join Barbara this August for a discussion on immunization shots. We want to know what you think? Yes? No? Maybe so? (Vaccine.org) COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION

Crolius, Ross Opera in the AM

Ross recently retired from the Metropolitan Opera after spending twenty-five years with the company as a full-time chorister. During that time he performed an average of 180 performances each season in operas ranging from Handel to Philip Glass, singing in 6 different languages. He performed in nearly 50 “Live from the Met” telecasts as well as singing in a half dozen opera recordings under the direction of Maestro James Levine. During his career at the Met, Ross was chosen to perform a number of small solo roles in many operas including Rigoletto, IL Trovatore, I Pagliacci, La Boheme and Der Rosenkavalier. Despite the demands of his rigorous Met schedule, Mr. Crolius continued to remain active as a concert soloist and recitalist in the New York area. An avid enthusiast of small vocal ensemble singing, Ross founded and managed a male vocal quartet called Songfellows that was originally formed from the ranks of the Met chorus. The group has performed from Maine to Maryland singing a broad range of purposefully non operatic repertoire. Mr. Crolius’ prior musical background includes two seasons performing with the Gregg Smith Singers, a three year enlistment in the Soldiers Chorus of the U.S. Army Field Band, and degrees from the Peabody Conservatory of Music and the Eastman School of Music. Since his retirement from the Met, Ross has shifted his focus to teaching voice and lecturing about opera. As a teacher, he has recently been added to the voice faculty at the Mozartina Conservatory in Tarrytown, NY. As an opera lecturer, Ross keeps very busy presenting opera talks primarily at senior residences throughout the local region. Mr. Crolius resides in Westchester County with his wife Nancy, also a former Met Opera chorister.
