A Message from Tony

There can be no question that our country is quickly moving along the path to recovery and a return to “normalcy”. Per capita, Canada is ranked first in the G7 on the administration of first doses, and we are administering vaccines faster than any other G7 nation.

We continue to ensure Canadians are protected, and we continue to invest in a full economic recovery – which includes ongoing infrastructure investments. It is vital that all of our infrastructure investments do triple duty, keeping Canadians healthy and safe while creating jobs and making our communities greener and more resilient.

And while these investments include physical and facility type projects, we will also ensure that we are supporting much needed social infrastructure. As municipalities adapt to the changing needs of residents, as a result of the pandemic, this funding will have a positive impact on thousands of families, community programs, and services. Please stay tuned for virtual local announcements.

As we begin to enjoy the first steps of reopening, we need to remain vigilant, recognizing the journey still ahead. This week, we will receive 9.5 million vaccine doses, which should allow us to accelerate the rate of vaccination across the country. As of June 14, more than 29 million doses have been administered across Canada. Over 64% of eligible Canadians have now received at least one vaccine dose.

To date, more than 11.2 million vaccines have found their way into the arms of Ontarians. In York Region, 947,862 residents have received at least one dose.

I encourage you to get vaccinated to protect yourself and others as new variants continue to be identified. The Delta variant appears to be more transmissible than others and may also increase severe illness and possibly death. Please watch for updates from York Region Public Health to find out when you might be able to receive your second dose.

And as we move forward, let’s continue to stay safe, follow health guidelines, and do everything possible to get to the next stage of reopening.

Standing in solidarity with Our London Family

Last week, a horrific attack in London took the lives of 4 innocent Canadians, and left a 9-year-old as the only surviving member of his family.

In the words of our Prime Minister, "their lives were taken in a brutal, cowardly, and brazen act of violence. This killing was no accident. This was a terrorist attack, motivated by hatred, in the heart of one of our communities."

Islamophobia has serious consequences, and all of us play a part in confronting racism and violence driven by hate. Together, we must ensure our communities are safe and welcoming for everyone, regardless of their race or faith.

Last night, the Newmarket Islamic Centre held a vigil in honour of the victims of the London attack. It was an emotional evening as we gathered as a community to show support for our neighbours.

To the Muslim community in Newmarket-Aurora, and across Canada, we stand in solidarity with you as you grieve. My heartfelt condolences to those impacted.

If you are in need of support after learning about this attack, please know that there are resources available for you. Wellness Together Canada Kids Help Phone

Helping communities through the pandemic

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, our government has acted quickly to support Canadians and communities across Canada.

We invested over $4.3 billion through our Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program to help address the challenges faced by communities as a result of COVID-19, and we created the Canada Healthy Communities Initiative to help build safer spaces and adapt to the challenges brought on by the pandemic.

Through the COVID-19 Resilience Stream, the federal government has invested 80 cents of every dollar to better support communities through the pandemic, including funds for better ventilation in schools, long-term care homes, and community buildings.

As we emerge from this pandemic, we have the opportunity to build back a better Canada for both current and future generations.
