Ileana Citaristi Biografia ILEANA CITARISTI Ileana Citaristi vive in India nella regione dell’Orissa dal 1979, dedita allo studio e alla ricerca sui due stili di danza classica indiana, Odissi e Mayurbhanji Chhau . Per lo stile Odissi si è formata alla scuola del famoso maestro Kelucharan Mohapatra , raggiungendo un livello di professionalità tale da essere considerata, a detta di un critico di un prestigioso giornale indiano. “l’unica esponente straniera degna di essere citata in qualsiasi trattato sulla danza indiana del periodo moderno”. Nello stile Mayurbhanji Chhau ha ottenuto il titolo di Acharya dal Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalay di Bhubaneswar sotto la guida del maestro Sri Hari Nayak . Ileana viene regolarmente invitata a partecipare nei maggiori festival di danza in India, dove riscuote con ogni sua esibizione entusiasti consensi di pubblico e di critica; è inoltre impegnata in studi di ricerca su vari aspetti di cultura indiana e nell’insegnamento dei due stili di danza. Insieme al suo gruppo di musicisti ha dato spettacoli, oltre che in numerose città italiane, anche in Olanda, Germania, Francia, Argentina, Malesia, Giappone, Spagna, Israele , Stati Uniti, Canada, South Korea, Polonia e Indonesia . Tra le sue coreografie innovative sono da citare il mito greco ‘ Eco e Narciso’ in Mayurbhanji Chhau che riscosse un grande successo allo ‘East-West Dance Encounter’ tenutosi a Bombay nel 1986 e il balletto in stile Odissi ‘ Maya Darpana’ inaugurato a Bombay nel 1993. Altre sue coreografie in stile Odissi sono Ganga Yamuna (2005), Tantra (2006), Saraha (2007), Mahanadi (2008), Karuna (2010), Maana Bhanjan (2011), Kaala-Timebound (2012), Gaia -Mother Earth (2013), Siddhartha (2014) e in stile Mayurbhanj Chhau ‘Pancha Bhuta’ (1995), ‘ The journey’ (1998) ‘ Images of Change’ (2000), 'Surya Devata' (2001), 'Jarjara' (2003), Still I rise (2008) Nel 1982 Ileana ha ottenuto il titolo di Singar Mani a Bombay; nel 1992 le è stato conferito il premio Leonide Massine per l’arte della danza a Positano, nel 1994 il titolo di Rasa Ishwari da una prestigiosa istituzione di Bombay e nel 2009 Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity dal Presidente della Republica. Nel 1996 ha ricevuto dal Governo Indiano il National Award per la migliore coreografia cinematografica e nello stesso anno le è stata assegnata dal Ministero della Cultura Indiano una ‘fellowship’ per svolgere ulteriori ricerche nel campo della danza. Oltre ad aver contribuito molti articoli su diversi aspetti della cultura Odia, Ileana ha anche scritto tre libri: The making of a guru sulla vita del maestro Kelucharan Mohapatra (New Delhi, 2001), Traditional martial practices in Odisha (New Delhi, 2013) e la sua auotbiografia My journey, a tale of two births (New Delhi, 2015). Ileana ha fondato la sua Accademia di Danza, Art Vision , a Bhubaneswar nel 1994, dove insegna i due stili di danza Odissi e Chhau ad allievi sia locali che stranieri. Nel 2006 le e stata conferita il prestigioso titolo di Padmashree dal Presidente Indiano per il suo contributo alla diffusione della danza Odissi.     THE DEBAPRASAD DAS TRADITION: RECONSIDERING THE NARRATIVE OF CLASSICAL INDIAN ODISSI DANCE HISTORY PAROMITA KAR A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN DANCE STUDIES YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO DECEMBER 2013 @PAROMITA KAR, 2013 ii Abstract This dissertation is dedicated to theorizing the Debaprasad Das stylistic lineage of Indian classical Odissi dance. Odissi is one of the seven classical Indian dance forms recognized by the Indian government. Each of these dance forms underwent a twentieth century “revival” whereby it was codified and recontextualized from pre-existing ritualistic and popular movement practices to a performance art form suitable for the proscenium stage. The 1950s revival of Odissi dance in India ultimately led to four stylistic lineage branches of Odissi, each named after the corresponding founding pioneer of the tradition. I argue that the theorization of a dance lineage should be inclusive of the history of the lineage, its stylistic vestiges and philosophies as embodied through its aesthetic characteristics, as well as its interpretation, and transmission by present-day practitioners. In my theorization of the Debaprasad Das lineage of Odissi, I draw upon Pierre Bourdieu's theory of the habitus, and argue that Guru Debaprasad Das's vision of Odissi dance was informed by the socio-political backdrop of Oriya nationalism, in the context of which he choreographed, but also resisted the heavy emphasis on coastal Oriya culture of the Oriya nationalist movement. My methodology for the project has been ethnographic, supported by original archival research.
