Holy Week is the most sacred time of the year for Christians. During this week, our focus is on the most important events in the earthly life of Jesus: His suffering, death and resurrection; the Paschal Mystery. Palm Sunday begins the solemn remembrance of Jesus’ last days on earth and the events that lead up to his death and resurrection. The liturgy of Palm Sunday begins with the blessing of palm branches and the reading of the Gospel narrative of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Palm Sunday is also known as Passion Sunday. Because it’s the Sunday before Easter, we remember the crucifixion. Today, the Gospel narrative of the passion and death of Jesus according to St. Mark is read. Lent actually comes to an end this week on Holy Thursday. On the evening of Holy Thursday, the short, three-day liturgical season, called the Easter Triduum, begins. The Easter Triduum encompasses the events of the Last Supper on Holy Thursday, the crucifixion and death of Jesus on Good Friday, the burial of Jesus, and finally the resurrection on Easter Sunday. The Holy Thursday evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper remembers the last meal Jesus shared with his Apostles. It recalls the institution of the Sacraments of the Eucharist and Holy Orders. The holy oils, consecrated by the bishop at the Chrism Mass, are presented for sacramental use in the parish throughout the year. Normally, the washing of feet occurs to remember how Jesus washed the feet of His Apostles and prepared them for priestly service. At the end of Mass the Eucharist is taken to the Altar of Repose and all the ornaments and furnishings in the sanctuary are taken away so it is left bare as a reminder that Jesus was taken away and will be sentenced to death by crucifixion the next day. Good Friday is the somber remembrance of Jesus’ horrific crucifixion and death on the cross. It is a day of fasting, prayer and personal reflection. Mass is not celebrated this day. Instead, the Liturgy of Good Friday is celebrated, which includes the reading of the Passion of Jesus according to St. John, the solemn General Intercessions of the Church, the veneration of the cross by all the faithful, and the reception of Holy Communion using the Eucharist that was consecrated at the evening mass of Holy Thursday. Holy Saturday is the day that the Church waits at the tomb of the Lord. The Easter Vigil begins at dusk this day. It is the powerful celebration of the resurrection of Jesus. The liturgy begins with the blessing of new fire and the lighting of the Easter Candle, reminding us that Christ is the Light of the World. Several selected passages from the Old Testament are read reminding us of God’s ever faithful covenant with His people throughout history. Water is blessed and new Christians are baptized and brought into full communion in the Catholic faith. Easter Sunday, of course, is the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus from the tomb. It is the day that lets us Christians celebrate God’s victory for us over sin and death. Let us allow the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts and minds with the profound solemnity and glory that these days of Holy Week bring to us. We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You, because by Your Holy Cross and Resurrection, You have redeemed the World! On Good Friday we begin the novena of the Divine Mercy. We will pray the chaplet and offer it each of the nine days for the for the intentions that Jesus himself has given us through St. Sister Faustina Kowalska. On Sunday, April 11, we will celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday with a service beginning at 3:00pm, the Hour of Mercy. Please see page 7 for the Divine Mercy schedule, and page 12 for the Holy Week schedule. 2 — Oඎඋ Lൺൽඒ ඈൿ Lൺඌ Vൾൺඌ Cൺඍඁඈඅංർ Cඁඎඋർඁ Mൺඋർඁ 28, 2021 MASS INTENTIONS TODAY’S READINGS Saturday, March 27 - Lenten Weekday Gospel at the Procession with Palms — Jesus’ entry 4:00pm: †Gloria Luglio into Jerusalem (Mark 11:1-10 or John 12:12-16).
