The London School of Economics and Political Science Mediated tensions: Italian newspapers and the legal recognition of de facto unions Marina Franchi A thesis submitted to the Gender Institute of the London School of Economics for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, London, May 2015 1 Declaration I certify that the thesis I have presented for examination for the MPhil/PhD degree of the London School of Economics and Political Science is solely my own work. The copyright of this thesis rests with the author. Quotation from it is permitted, provided that full acknowledgement is made. This thesis may not be reproduced without my prior written consent. I warrant that this authorisation does not, to the best of my belief, infringe the rights of any third party. I declare that my thesis consists of 88924 words. Statement of use of third party for editorial help (if applicable) I can confirm that my thesis was copy edited for conventions of language, spelling and grammar by Hilary Wright 2 Abstract The recognition of rights to couples outside the institution of marriage has been, and still is, a contentious issue in Italian Politics. Normative notions of family and kinship perpetuate the exclusion of those who do not conform to the heterosexual norm. At the same time the increased visibility of kinship arrangements that evade the heterosexual script and their claims for legal recognition, expose the fragility and the constructedness of heteronorms. During the Prodi II Government (2006-2008) the possibility of a law recognising legal status to de facto unions stirred a major controversy in which the conservative political forces and the Catholic hierarchies opposed any form of recognition, with particular acrimony shown toward same sex couples.

After all, if so much that has been cherished for 2,000 years is now open to radical change, even disposal, then why not change even more, why not dispose of troubling dogmas like the Trinity and Divinity of Christ to accommodate pagan beliefs and rituals? Forum Internacional International Forum Forum Internazionale de Acción Católica of Catholic Action di Azione Cattolica NOTICIAS NEWSLETTER NOTIZIE 2006/1 “A year has already passed since the death of the Servant of God John Paul II. (…). He continues to be present in our minds and hearts; he continues to communcate us his love for God and his love for man; he continues to inspire in one and all, especially in the young people, the enthusiasm for good and the courage to follow Jesus and his teachings. How can we sum up the life and evangelical witness of this great Pontiff? I will attend to do so by using two words: “fidelity” and “dedication”, total fidelity to God and unreserved dedication to his mission as Pastor of the universal Church. (…) In the first anniversary of his return to the Father's House, we are invited to accept anew the spiritual legacy he has bequeathed to us; we are urged, among other things, to live by seeking tirelessly the Truth that alone brings relief to our hearts. We are encou- raged not to be afraid to follow Christ in order to bring everyone the Gospel proclama- tion which is the leaven of a more fraternal and supportive humanity. May John Paul II help us from Heaven to continue on our way, remaining docile disciples of Jesus in order to be, as he himself loved to repeat to young people, “dawn watchmen” at the beginning of this third Christian millennium”. (Benedict XVI 2nd April 2006) With these words addressed to us by the Pope, we look back on this past year as an important and significant lap in the life of the Church, of the world and also of CA and look forward to the future.

  • The Holy See
The Holy See ADDRESS OF HIS HOLINESS OF POPE JOHN PAUL II AT A READING OF DANTE'S DIVINE COMEDY Sunday, 31 August 1997 Ladies and Gentlemen, 1. I am pleased to extend a cordial welcome to each of you who have gathered in this courtyard of the Apostolic Palace in Castel Gandolfo to pay homage to the art and faith of the greatest Italian poet. In particular I greet Cardinal Ersilio Tonini and Archbishop Luigi Amaducci of Ravenna. I also greet the Deputy Prime Minister, the President of the Dante Alighieri Association and all who have wanted to participate in this particular moment of the "Dante Project", which, thanks to the rigorous and original reading of Prof. Vittorio Sermonti, has allowed us to hear again the marvellous stages of Dante’s spiritual and artistic journey. With the reading of the last canto of the "Paradiso", we too have been invited this evening to become pilgrims of the spirit and to be led by Dante’s sublime poetry to contemplate "the Love that moves the sun and the other stars", the ultimate end of history and of every human life. In these verses the divine Poet points to the definitive goal of existence, where the passions subside and where man discovers his end-point and his extraordinary vocation as one called to contemplate the divine Mystery. 2. In the grand scene presenting man’s search for salvation, the Poet assigns a central place to Mary, "humble and higher than creation", the familiar and sublime image of the woman who sheds light on the parable of the final ascent, after having supported the traveler’s tiring journey.

  • Bioethics in Italy Since 1997 10 Maurizio Mori
Bioethics in Italy since 1997 10 Maurizio Mori I. Introduction The watershed year for Italian bioethics was 1997. The birth of Dolly the sheep in Scotland at the end of February 1997 caused such cultural turmoil that bioethics was given a new social status. Before Dolly’s birth, bioethics was already a growing discipline that increasingly attracted attention from educated people, but it was still a field restricted to a few specialists.1 Dolly’s birth radically changed the level and magnitude of the inter- est in these topics: bioethics became a matter of public debate and a source of political concern. The media has been so deeply involved in this issue, for such a length of time, that the word “bioethics” itself has become popular and has gained a place in common usage. The “Dolly affair” likely would have been sufficient to start this new “bioethics blooming”, because cloning has a deep symbolic meaning in Western culture and incites strong feelings. However, in Italy several factors contributed to such a new atmosphere and, in one sense, prepared it. On Saturday, February 1, 1997, just before the annual “Pro-life Day” celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church, four well-known Italian intel- lectuals supported a new bill, presented by the Italian Pro-Life Movement and signed by over a million citizens, that would modify article one of the civil code. According to the present law, a human being acquires “legal capacity” – i.e., full acquisition of a person’s rights – at birth: according to the proposal, “legal capacity” would be acquired immedi- ately “at conception”.2 Since two of these intellectuals were Professor Francesco D’Agostino, the president of the National Committee for Bioethics, and Professor Giuliano Amato, the Minister of Treasury, their public Pro-Life declaration started a great deal of polemical discussion.

  • The Strange Papacy of Pope Francis
The strange papacy of Pope Francis. It has been one year to the day since Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected to the supreme pontificate. An unusual year in all respects, that seems to have lasted an eternity, given that Francis has not ceased to utter countless words and make countless gestures at a revolutionary pace since his unprecedented “buona sera” delivered Wednesday, 13 March 2013 in St. Peter’s loggia. A profane greeting, and highly symbolic, since which the course of time has scarcely been able to resist the Bergoglian frenzy and fury. Continuous action and incontinent words, noisy and confused, flow forth like a mountain stream that gushes into a waterfall, attracted by the force of the void that inevitably pulls it into a vortex where nothing can be seen clearly and where nothing can escape the deadly flood that destroys everything in its passage. His dubious enterprises should initiate long theological studies, steered by the talented and erudite pen of some major apologist, whom perhaps, in His infinite mercy, Divine Providence will deign to send to us in order to enlighten our sleepy minds with his luminous teachings. Pending this salutary event, I dare to publish this small article in which I have tried to compensate for my lack of talent with a serious and painstaking work and to balance a narrow science with unconditional and unreserved love for outraged truth. 03/13/14. Note dated 04/27/14: Since the publication of this article, my position towards Francis has changed. The reason is that Our Lord prayed for Peter’s faith and gave him the mission to confirm the faith of his brothers: « Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat.
