Presentation

The Ortega y Gasset University Research Institute is a centre of postgraduate education and research in the Social Sciences and the Humanities whose curriculum and methodology have been complied with the new European Higher Education Area (Bologna process). The IUIOG, which shares many similarities with the graduate schools in American Universities and is affiliated with the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, was founded in 1978 as part of the José Ortega y Gasset Foundation and officially recognized as a University Institute in 1986.

The Board of Directors of the University Institute is made up of representatives from the four founding institutions (the Spanish Ministry of Education, Social Politics and Sports; the ; the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and the José Ortega y Gasset Foundation) and by a select group of prestigious university professors.

The high quality of the IUIOG programs is confirmed, year in, year out, by the students´ success after their graduation. The Institute provides an outstanding education based on an internationally recognized and experienced teaching staff, a small number of students per class and a demanding workload and study progress. The joint effort of students, teachers and researchers has resulted in the defense of more than a hundred doctoral theses and the accomplishment of several research projects.

The integration of the Institute as part of the José Ortega y Gasset Foundation places its academic activity in a wider context. Conceived as a forum for study, debate, research and cultural dissemination, the Foundation is today one of the most prestigious Spanish academic institutes in its field, which gives a wider perspective to the Institute, both in the national and international sphere. programa actividades 2010 sinp ing 8/3/10 10:21 Página 4

José Ortega y Gasset

José Ortega y Gasset (1883-1955) is the most outstanding Spanish philosopher of the twentieth century and one of the foremost European intellectuals of his time, with an extraordinary reputation on the American continent. A master of the contemporary essay and creator of a brilliant style, his legacy covers a great variety of disciplines and it is today surprisingly contemporary.

Ortega predicted the formation of a future European Union when Europe was heading towards World War II, and on technology, education and the vertebration of society he wrote reflections which are fully valid today. As a philosopher, he declared the end of idealism and developed a system centered on the analysis of human life as a radical reality and on the elaboration of a new concept of reason. As a thinker, he fought for a process of pro-European reform in Spain, he used the press extensively as a means of communication and played an active part in the politics of his time.

Politics, philosophy, ethics, pedagogy and aesthetics merge in his works which had a strong influence throughout the Spanish-speaking world in the period between the two World Wars and which today are the object of constant analysis by a young generation of researchers.

The author of The Modern Theme (1923), The Dehumanization of Art (1925) and The Revolt of the Masses (1930), Ortega was considered by Albert Camus “the greatest of European writers” after Nietzsche and he was the driving force behind many intellectual projects. He founded the daily newspaper El Sol (1917), was the editor of Los Lunes de El Imparcial and Revista de Occidente (1923), and directed the Agrupación al Servicio de la República (1931) and the Instituto de Humanidades (1948).

The Foundation which carries his name has inherited this enterprising spirit. www.ortegaygasset.edu piso er FUNDACIÓN INSTITUTO UNIVERSITARIO UNIVERSITARIO FUNDACIÓN INSTITUTO Y GASSET ORTEGA DE INVESTIGACIÓN JOSÉ 53.
