To asssit them in the interpretation of pollen diagrams is annexed an overview of the regional flora based on former detailed monographs more reliable than recent observations carried on the current environment strongly degraded. 119 taxa are described representative of 108 genus and 61 families Résumé : L’Atlas pollinique des régions montagneuses bordières du Lac Kivu n’a pas pour objectif d’être un ouvrage palynologique exhaustif de la riche flore des hauts reliefs de la branche occidentale du rift. Son but est de venir en aide aux chercheurs paléoenvironnementalistes dans leurs analyses de séquences sédimentaires quaternaires. Pour affiner l’interprétation des diagrammes polliniques, est annexé à l’atlas un aperçu des flores régionales basé principalement sur d’anciennes monographies plus fiables que les observations effectuées actuellement sur une flore fortement dégradée. Sont décrits et figurés 119 taxa représentant 108 genres et 61 familles. 5 6 INTRODUCTION L’Atlas pollinique des régions montagneuses bordières du Lac Kivu n’a pas pour objectif d’être un ouvrage exhaustif illustrant la riche flore des hautes terres d’Afrique centrale mais plutôt d’être un outil destiné à faciliter l’étude paléoenvironnementale quaternaire des reliefs de la branche occidentale du grand rift est-africain. -

A botanical inventory of vascular plants of Kitui county was compiled from specimens collected during field investigations in Kitui county, at the East African (EA) herbarium and from literature reporting on plants of Kitui county. To obtain an inventory of wild edible plants found in Kitui county, literature reporting on wild edible plants of Kenya were searched and combined with the use reports obtained from field surveys in Kitui county. A total of 199 wild plants found in Kitui county have the potential of being utilized as foods in different ways. Plant species growing either as trees or shrubs (83 species) and herbs (36 species) are the dominant life forms while the best represented plant families are Leguminosae (25 species) and Malvaceae (17 species).
