Results are then pre- sented which suggest that the country’s Odonata fauna is currently in a period of fl ux, in a manner consist- ent with the actions of a high-level regulatory factor such as climate change. Th e ranges of many resident species are shifting. Leucorrhinia dubia has recently been lost from southern England, but many species are presently expanding their ranges to the north and west, some (such as Aeshna mixta and Anax imperator) with considerable speed. In addition to these changes, a number of ‘southern’ species have started to ap- pear in Britain for the very fi rst time. Th ese include Lestes barbarus, Erythromma viridulum (which has now become a locally-common resident in southeast England), Anax parthenope and Crocothemis erythraea. -

Despite their low species numbers, hornworts represent a key group for understanding the evolution of plant form because the best–sampled current phylogenies place them as sister to the tracheophytes. Despite their low taxonomic diversity, the group has not been monographed worldwide. There are few well-documented hornwort floras for temperate or tropical areas. Moreover, no species level phylogenies or population studies are available for hornworts. Here we aim at filling some important gaps in hornwort biology and biodiversity. We provide estimates of hornwort species richness worldwide, identifying centers of diversity. We also present two examples of the impact of recent work in elucidating the composition and circumscription of the genera Megaceros and Nothoceros. -
HBRG Atlas of Social Wasps
HBRG Atlas of Social Wasps HBRG has already produced atlases for bumblebees and ants. We are now planning a companion atlas for the social wasps. These are the ‘yellow-jacket’ wasps known (but not necessarily loved) by everyone. Saxon Wasp Dolichovespula saxonica (source). One major driver for this idea is the northward expansion of the Saxon Wasp Dolichovespula saxonica, which was first recorded in the UK in Surrey in 1987. It has since spread steadily northwards, and was in Highland by 2013. In 2018, it became obvious that it was well established in the north, at least as far north as Evanton on the Cromarty Firth in the east and Oban in the west. We in HBRG are in an ideal position to monitor its further spread. The German Wasp Vespula germanica, absent from Highland for decades, is now re-established in the Moray Firth area and is likely to spread farther. As we have only eight species recorded in Highland - and the Hornet has only a single record - it is a manageable group (see below). We know remarkably little about the distribution of even the common species. Another aim of the project is to establish a baseline against which to measure any changes in distribution caused by environmental change or by the colonisation by the Saxon Wasp. To succeed in discovering more, we do need the help of our members, especially those living in or visiting the more remote corners of the area. We will cooperate with a UK-wide project run by BWARS with very similar aims. The nature of the task Currently, only 11 of our 351 hectads (10km squares) have all 6 truly Highland species recorded since 1995 (the cut-off date for the Atlas); only 59 have three or more species; and 208 have none at all! In the coverage map opposite, blanks or pale grey squares need to be targeted. -

Dumfries & Galloway Wildlife Review Cover Image: Hedgehog by Keith Kirk. Keith is a former Dumfries & Galloway Council ranger and now helps to run Nocturnal Wildlife Tours based in Castle Douglas. The tours use a specially prepared night tours vehicle, complete with external mounted thermal camera and internal viewing screens. Each participant also has their own state- of-the-art thermal imaging device to use for the duration of the tour. This allows participants to detect animals as small as rabbits at up to 300 metres away or get close enough to see Badgers and Roe Deer going about their nightly routine without them knowing you’re there. The maintenance and management of this great place requires sensitivity and constant care.’ ROYAL PARKS REVIEW OF GREEWNICH PARK 1995 CHAIRMAN’S FOREWORD Greenwich Park is England’s oldest enclosed public park, a Grade1 listed landscape that forms two thirds of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site. The parks essential character is created by its dramatic topography juxtaposed with its grand formal landscape design. Its sense of place draws on the magnificent views of sky and river, the modern docklands panorama, the City of London and the remarkable Baroque architectural ensemble which surrounds the park and its established associations with time and space. Still in its 1433 boundaries, with an ancient deer herd and a wealth of natural and historic features Greenwich Park attracts 4.7 million visitors a year which is estimated to rise to 6 million by 2030. We recognise that its capacity as an internationally significant heritage site and a treasured local space is under threat from overuse, tree diseases and a range of infrastructural problems. I am delighted to introduce this Greenwich Park Conservation Plan, developed as part of the Greenwich Park Revealed Project. The plan has been written in a new format which we hope will reflect the importance that we place on creating robust and thoughtful plans. -

They have an intrinsic value as well as the much stated economic value, (estimated at £691 million per year to the UK economy). Our members, volunteers and staff are united around the shared purpose of ensuring their existence and conservation. But we need more people to understand, enjoy and cherish our bumblebees, that’s why at the AGM in December I urged everyone in the room to ‘Bee the Revolution’. Reversing the Buff-tailed bumblebee trend in their declines, needs a concerted effort by all of us who (Bombus terrestris) are passionate about them. “ Please help by asking friends and family to join the Trust. This results in 137 species, which is 41% of all species that occur in the Netherlands. The species of priority are: Andrena rosae, A. labialis, A. wilkella, Bombus jonellus, B. muscorum and B. veteranus. Potential species of priority are: Andrena pilipes, A. gravida Bombus ruderarius B. rupestris and Nomada bifasciata. Threats to bees are: scaling up in agriculture, eutrophication, reduction of flowers, pesticides and competition with honey bees. -

A SURVEY OF THE BEES AND WASPS OF FIFTEEN CHALK GRASSLAND AND CHALK HEATH SITES WITHIN THE EAST SUSSEX SOUTH DOWNS Steven Falk, 2011 A SURVEY OF THE BEES AND WASPS OF FIFTEEN CHALK GRASSLAND AND CHALK HEATH SITES WITHIN THE EAST SUSSEX SOUTH DOWNS Steven Falk, 2011 Abstract For six years between 2003 and 2008, over 100 site visits were made to fifteen chalk grassland and chalk heath sites within the South Downs of Vice-county 14 (East Sussex). This produced a list of 227 bee and wasp species and revealed the comparative frequency of different species, the comparative richness of different sites and provided a basic insight into how many of the species interact with the South Downs at a site and landscape level. The study revealed that, in addition to the character of the semi-natural grasslands present, the bee and wasp fauna is also influenced by the more intensively-managed agricultural landscapes of the Downs, with many species taking advantage of blossoming hedge shrubs, flowery fallow fields, flowery arable field margins, flowering crops such as Rape, plus plants such as buttercups, thistles and dandelions within relatively improved pasture. Some very rare species were encountered, notably the bee Halictus eurygnathus Blüthgen which had not been seen in Britain since 1946. This was eventually recorded at seven sites and was associated with an abundance of Greater Knapweed. The very rare bees Anthophora retusa (Linnaeus) and Andrena niveata Friese were also observed foraging on several dates during their flight periods, providing a better insight into their ecology and conservation requirements.
