Capriccio Espagnol Legal Use Requires Purchase GRADE LEVEL— MEDIUM EASY Alfred’s Growing Band Series Capriccio Espagnol Nicolai Kimsky-Korsakov / Arr. by Mark Williams Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol is known worldwide as one of the master- works of orchestration. It has been admired and studied by many composers including Tchaikovsky. It was written in 1887 at about the same time as his famous Scheherazade and Russian Easter Overture. This arrangement of the final sections of the work capture its exciting Spanish flavor and rhythms in a format that is very accessible to young bands. This piece can be conducted in one beat to the measure, or in three, or in a combination of the two. It is important that the tempo remain steady and not be allowed to bog down. The optimum tempo will be determined by how well the ensemble can play the fast eighth-note sec- tions at measures 44 and 103 . Generally, a faster tempo will contribute more to the energy and drive of the music. PROGRAM NOTES by Phillip Huscher Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov – Capriccio espagnol, Op. 34 Born March 18, 1844, Tikhvin, near Novgorod, Russia. Died June 21, 1908, Liubensk, near Saint Petersburg, Russia. Capriccio espagnol, Op. 34 Rimsky-Korsakov composed this work in the summer of 1887 and conducted the first performance on November 12 of that year in Saint Petersburg. The score calls for two flutes and piccolo, two oboes and english horn, two clarinets, two bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones and tuba, timpani, snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, triangle, tambourine, castanets, harp, and strings. Performance time is approximately fifteen minutes. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s first subscription concert performances of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol were given at the Auditorium Theatre on March 29 and 30, 1901, with Theodore Thomas conducting. Our most recent subscription concert performances were given at Orchestra Hall on May 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14, 2000, with Bobby McFerrin conducting. The Orchestra first performed this work at the Ravinia Festival on July 31, 1936, with Werner Janssen conducting, and most recently on July 26, 2003, with Christoph Eschenbach conducting. Rimsky-Korsakov had never heard an orchestra until his father took him to Saint Petersburg to enroll in the College of Naval Cadets at the age of twelve. When he attended his first opera there, it was not the stage spectacle or the singing, but the great sound rising from the pit that excited him most. Early in 1857, he wrote home: Imagine my joy, today I’m going to the theater! I shall see Lucia! I shall hear the enormous orchestra and the tam-tam! and I shall see how the conductor waves his little stick.

  • RUSSIAN & UKRAINIAN Russian & Ukrainian Symphonies and Orchestral Works
RUSSIAN & UKRAINIAN Russian & Ukrainian Symphonies and Orchestral Works Occupying a vast land mass that has long been a melting pot of home-spun traditions and external influences, Russia’s history is deeply encrypted in the orchestral music to be found in this catalogue. Journeying from the Russian Empire through the Soviet era to the contemporary scene, the music of the Russian masters covers a huge canvas of richly coloured and immediately accessible works. Influences of folklore, orthodox liturgy, political brutality and human passion are all to be found in the listings. These range from 19th-century masterpieces penned by ‘The Mighty Five’ (Balakirev, Rimsky-Korsakov, Mussorgsky, Borodin, and Cui) to the edgy works of Prokofiev and Shostakovich that rubbed against the watchful eye of the Soviet authorities, culminating in the symphonic output of one of today’s most noted Russian composers, Alla Pavlova. Tchaikovsky wrote his orchestral works in a largely cosmopolitan style, leaving it to the band of brothers in The Mighty Five to fully shake off the Germanic influence that had long dominated their homeland’s musical scene. As part of this process, they imparted a thoroughly ethnic identity to their compositions. The titles of the works alone are enough to get the imaginative juices running, witness Borodin’s In the Steppes of Central Asia, Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh, and Mussorgsky’s St John’s Night on the Bare Mountain. Supplementing the purely symphonic works, instrumental music from operas and ballets is also to be found in, for example, Prokofiev’sThe Love for Three Oranges Suite, Shostakovich’s four Ballet Suites, and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite.

  • NIKOLAY Rimsky~Korsakov
NIKOLAY RImsKY~KORsakov Nikolay RImsKY-KORsakov PIANO DUOS Although Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov composed in most of the usual forms, it is for his operas and orchestral works that he is chiefly remembered. It is also in these Artur Pizarro & Vita Panomariovaite compositions that his best music is to be found. He did compose choral works, chamber and instrumental music and songs but this part of his output is neither widely known Scheherazade Op.35 about by the general music lover nor thought very highly of by the musicologist. (arr. Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov) Indeed, gerald Abraham, a prolific biographer of the composer, when writing for the 1 I: Largo e maestoso 11.18 New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (macmillan, 1980) claimed that Rimsky- 2 II: Lento 11.24 Korsakov’s solo piano compositions, although including some well-made fugues, are, 3 III: Andantino quasi allegretto 10.32 ‘like the handful of chamber works, negligible in value.’ In his book – Six Great Russian 4 IV: Allegro molto 13.14 Composers (Rockliff, 1946) – Donald Brook also suggested that several of the minor works Rimsky-Korsakov produced, in particular the piano pieces, were ‘absolutely 5 Sadko Op.5 11.52 (arr. Nadezhda Nikolayevna Rimskaya-Korsakova) devoid of the vivid spontaneity that characterizes so much of his music’. Apart from the aforementioned fugues, the piano works include two or three sets of variations Capriccio Espagnol Op.34 (one on a theme by the composer’s eldest son, misha), various preludes, scherzos (arr. Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov) and the like, and, written in collaboration with Borodin, Cui, Liadov and others, a set 6 I: Alborada 1.17 of Paraphrases on that irritating little tune known in english as ‘chopsticks’ and in 7 II: Variazioni 4.19 Russian as Táti-táti.

  • Rimsky-Korsakov, Capriccio Espagnol Op. 34
Nikolai RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Capriccio Espagnol Nikolai Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov (18 March 1844 – 21 June 1908) was a Russian composer, and a member of the group of Russian composers known as The Mighty Five (along with Mily Balakirev, César Cui, Modest Mussorgsky, and Alexander Borodin). Before Rimsky-Korsakov began studying music, he had joined the naval academy in St. Petersburg at 12 as a result of his family’s involvement in the Russian navy. Under the guidance of Balakirev, he would begin writing his first symphony at 18, and finished the first 3 movements while on board a nearly 3-year long cruise around Europe and the Americas. Upon returning to Russia, Rimsky-Korsakov completed and premiered his first symphony, as well as his Fantasy on Serbian Themes (1867), which won him significant public acclaim. Due to his reputation, he began teaching composition at St. Petersburg Conservatory at 27, despite never studying theory systematically. He would embark on a rigorous 3-year education, trying to “catch up to his students.” As his popularity grew, Rimsky-Korsakov befriended Russian music patron and industrialist, Mitrofan Belyayev, in 1882. Belyayev would look to Rimsky-Korsakov for direction regarding his publishing enterprise, and Rimsky-Korsakov – alongside Alexander Glazunov and Anatoly Lyadov – would become the head of this project, which was centrally involved with the promotion of certain Russian music and composers. Unfortunately, the stresses of the Russian revolution in 1905 made his chronic angina more severe, and he would pass away shortly after in 1908. Despite the popularity of Rimsky-Korsakov’s operas in Russia today – as well as his orchestral pieces “The Flight of the Bumblebee” and “Song of India” – his influence as a teacher is perhaps more profound.
