Garcia). The music of John Coltrane’s last group—his 1965-67 quintet—has been misrepresented, ignored and reviled by critics, scholars and fans, primarily because it is a music built on a fundamental and very audible disunity that renders a new kind of structural unity. Many of those who study Coltrane’s music have thus far attempted to approach all elements in his last works comparatively, using harmonic and melodic models as is customary regarding more conventional jazz structures. This approach is incomplete and misleading, given the music’s conceptual underpinnings. The present study is meant to provide an analytical model with which listeners and scholars might come to terms with this music’s more radical elements. I use Coltrane’s own observations concerning his final music, Jonathan Kramer’s temporal perception theory, and Evan Parker’s perspectives on atomism and laminarity in mid 1960s British improvised music to analyze and contextualize the symbiotically related temporal disunity and resultant structural unity that typify Coltrane’s 1965-67 works. -

GRADE LEVEL— MEDIUM EASY Alfred’s Growing Band Series Capriccio Espagnol Nicolai Kimsky-Korsakov / Arr. by Mark Williams Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol is known worldwide as one of the master- works of orchestration. It has been admired and studied by many composers including Tchaikovsky. It was written in 1887 at about the same time as his famous Scheherazade and Russian Easter Overture. This arrangement of the final sections of the work capture its exciting Spanish flavor and rhythms in a format that is very accessible to young bands. This piece can be conducted in one beat to the measure, or in three, or in a combination of the two. It is important that the tempo remain steady and not be allowed to bog down. The optimum tempo will be determined by how well the ensemble can play the fast eighth-note sec- tions at measures 44 and 103 . Generally, a faster tempo will contribute more to the energy and drive of the music. Educated in Grahamstown, Salzburg, Rome and Jerusalem, he is a member of Trinity College (Cambridge), the Meyerbeer Institute Schloss Thurmau (University of Bayreuth), the Salzburg Centre for Research in the Early English Novel (University of Salzburg) and the Maryvale Institute (Birmingham) as well as a panel tutor at ICE. Robert's publications number over 100 items, including books and articles on the late seventeenth-, eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century novel (particularly the Gothic Novel and Sir Walter Scott), the Bible, and European culture. He has specialized in the Romantic opera, especially the work of Giacomo Meyerbeer (a four-volume English edition of his diaries, critical studies, and two analyses of the operas), the opera-comique and Daniel-François-Esprit Auber, Operetta, the Romantic Ballet and Ludwig Minkus. A Musical Education: Lee Morgan and the Philadelphia Jazz Scene of the 1950s Byjeffery S. McMillan The guys were just looking at him. They couldn't believe what was coming out of that horn! You know, ideas like . where would you get them? Michael LaVoe (1999) When Michael LaVoe observed Lee Morgan, a fellow freshman at Philadelphia's Mastbaum Vocational Technical High School, playing trumpet with members of the school's dance band in the first days of school in September 1953, he could not believe his ears. Morgan, who had just turned fifteen years old the previous July, had remarkable facility on his instrument and displayed a sophisticated understanding of music for someone so young. Other members of the ensemble, some of whom al- ready had three years of musical training and performing experience in the school's vocational music program, experienced similar feelings of dis- belief when they heard the newcomer's precocious ability. Lee Morgan had successfully auditioned into Mastbaum's music program, the strongest of its kind in Philadelphia from the 1930s through the 1960s, and demon- strated a rare ability that begged the title "prodigy." Almost exactly three years later, in November of 1956, Lee Morgan, now a member of die Dizzy Gillespie orchestra, elicited a similar response at the professional level after the band's New York opening at Birdland. Word spread, and as the Gillespie band embarked on its national tour, au- diences and critics nationwide took notice of the young soloist featured on what was often the leader's showcase number: "A Night in Tunisia." Nat Hentoff caught the band on their return to New York from the Midwest in 1957. -

These works which are also used for training repertoires are the works that provide technical and musical development for the students. Weber clarinet concertino is among these works. This concertino with single part consists of three parts in itself. These are Adagio ma non troppo, Andante and Allegro. There are more or less technical and musical difficulties of the concertino that changes from one clarinetist to the other. However, each teacher and student have his/her own methods to solve these difficulties. What is important is to be aware of these difficulties and to apply a correct way to study it. In this study, first, some information about Romantic Period music is presented in a historical order, the place and the importance of Weber in the history of music are mentioned, and some methods are described in order to decrease the musical and technical difficulties in clarinet concertino.
