Most importantly, in order to make them more easily accessible to readers without any Russian, I have deleted all quota- tions in Russian and replaced them with English equivalents. Besides, I have where possible used Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky’s excellent translations of Dostoevsky’s novels instead of the older ones by David Magarshack. Apart from these adjustments, the essays reflect the Stand der Forschung at the time when they were written. The book uses the Library of Congress transliteration system, with the exception of certain names where other forms are commonly used in English, such as Dostoevsky, Gogol, or Tolstoy. I am indebted to a number of colleagues and students of Russian lit- erature in the Nordic countries and further afield for their responses to my analyses. Introduction The essays collected in this volume, written at various times and in various places, range from an account of early East Slavic (Old Russian) literature, through a number of readings of the classic nineteenth-centu- ry Russian novel, to an exposition of Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of genre. Despite the differences, however, they have at least one basic theme in common. This common theme may be described as “prose poetics,” or as “the poetry of prose,” as I call it in my discussion of Turgenev’s novel Fathers and Sons. The poetry of prose may seem like a contradiction in terms. We are used to thinking of “prose” and “poetry” as opposite concepts, associating poetry with verse composition, in particular with the short lyric poem, and prose with narrative literature. In contrast to the latter, in which the characters’ story develops in a sequence of events, linked together in time and space, by cause and effect, lyrics are composed according to the principle of parallelism. In other words, two or more units are brought together in such a way that they form a series of analogies, in which the units are perceived as similar or equivalent in some respects, retaining their differences in others. Examples of such similarity in difference on the level of sound are: metre, rhyme, alliteration and assonance, and on the level of sense: comparison, allegory, parable and metaphor. Such jux- taposition of different units immediately activates the principle of simi- larity. Either the units are juxtaposed because they are similar, or they become similar through being juxtaposed. On the level of meaning, the establishment of analogy between different concepts is the source of po- etic “imagery,” often considered to be the essence of poetic composition. 10 introduction In the bipolar system of language, equivalence or similarity pertains to the metaphoric pole, whereas combination and contiguity are related to the metonymic pole.1 Because of this, the basic distinction between metaphoric and metonymic predominance is important for the way we read a text. The foregrounding of similarity or equivalence in lyric verse prompts us to look for a meaningful interplay between sound and mean- ing, as well as between meanings. Narrative prose, on the other hand, stimulates the readers’ curiosity about what happens to the characters in the development of the plot as it unfolds in space and time, and to their interaction with one another and with their social and natural environ- ments. When we read fictional prose, our perception is directed by these two forms of sequencing, the causal and the temporal. It is the principle of contiguity that prevails as we follow the characters in their movements through a fictional time-space that is “natural” enough to allow us to identify our perception of our own life with that of fiction.2 However, in addition to these “prosaic” structures, based on combination and con- tiguity, the art of fiction also involves a rich variety of parallelistic pat- terning. And it is this patterning that gives the “life” material a higher symbolic dimension.3 The art of transforming sequential prose narrative into symbolic par- allelism is manifest in Russian literature from its very beginning. Already by the eleventh century East Slavic preachers and hagiographers had as- similated the traditional Christian method of juxtaposing their own discourse with biblical quotations in order to bring out the conformity of events and characters from their own recent history with events and characters in the Bible and the Christian tradition. We see it very clearly in Nestor’s Reading on the Life and Slaying of the Blessed Martyrs Boris and Gleb and his Life of Saint Feodosii. Today, the method exemplified by Nestor’s hagiographic writings is usually referred to as “figural interpre- tation,” a term introduced into literary studies by Erich Auerbach.

Morning, evening and night they prayed the “divine services” of the Byzantine Church, and this study is the first to examine how these rituals shaped the way they wrote and compiled the Povest’ vremennykh let (Primary Chronicle, ca. 12th century), the earliest surviving East Slavic historical record. My principal argument is that several foundational accounts of East Slavic history—including the tales of the baptism of Princess Ol’ga and her burial, Prince Vladimir’s conversion, the mass baptism of Rus’, and the martyrdom of Princes Boris and Gleb—have their source in the feasts of the liturgical year. The liturgy of the Eastern Church proclaimed a distinctively Byzantine myth of Christian origins: a sacred narrative about the conversion of the Roman Empire, the glorification of the emperor Constantine and empress Helen, and the victory of Christianity over paganism. In the decades following the conversion of Rus’, the chroniclers in Kiev learned these narratives from the church services and patterned their own tales of Christianization after them. The ii result was a myth of Christian origins for Rus’—a myth promulgated even today by the Russian Orthodox Church—that reproduced the myth of Christian origins for the Eastern Roman Empire articulated in the Byzantine rite.

    1 Pagan Beliefs in Ancient Russia. By Luceta di Cosimo, Barony Marche of the Debatable Lands, Aethelmearc. [email protected] ©2006-2017 Slavic mythology is a difficult subject. The historical evidence is fragmented, with many conflicting sources and multiple later literary inventions. This is a brief reconstruction of ancient Russian mythology. The first archaeological findings that can be attributed to Slavs date to approximately 6th c. AD. The origins of Slavs are still debated. The pagan Slavic society was an oral society. Christianity, which introduced writing, was more concerned with eradication rather than preservation of pagan beliefs. No one really tried to preserve and record whatever remained, until late period. Then, there is some evidence recorded from the Germans who visited Russia in 18th c., but a lot of it is based on the written 15thc. sources, rather than eyewitness accounts. The 19th c. Europe saw renewed interest in folklore, and combined with rise of nationalism and need for developed mythos, a lot of what was left was recorded, but a lot was altered to make it more palatable, and questionable things (especially with fertility rituals) were edited out as not to besmirch the emerging national character. During the Soviet time, the study of any religion was problematic, due to mandatory atheism. Eventually, the study of the early Slavic traditions was permitted, and even encouraged, but, everything had to pass stringent censorship rules, and could not contradict Marxist-Leninist philosophy. So, people who had the material (in the USSR) could not publish, and people who actually could publish (in the West) did not have access to the materials.

    M!"#$% V!%#&'!($* !e complex and often puzzling personality of Father André Scrima was misapprehended for a long time. !is article discusses the reasons for such a misapprehension and o"ers some possible explanations for his paradoxical behaviour. An overview of the reception of Father Scrima’s life and works shows a dynamic at work that can only generate optimism. His participation in the Burning Bush group at the Antim monastery in Bucharest was one of the most important formative experiences, where a wide cultural and scienti#c perspective was fused with an in- depth religious experience. Father Scrima may be better understood if we consider him the #rst of a new kind of fools for Christ, a kind that is well-equipped to face the challenges of tomorrow. Could this be the reason why the impressive erudition of Father André Scrima is still hard to accept and to understand in the Orthodox ecclesiastical environment? The PIE (proto-Indo-European) names are reconstructions of the Scandinavian names only! Listen in brackets are the names of the regions of Thulê (the world of MYFAROG), and their corresponding 'real world' inspirations (e. g. Roman and Etruscan for the region Troskenia). I am completely missing the Baltic, Basque, Celt-Iberian, Dacian/Thracian, Egyptian, Finnish, Iberian, Illyrian and Sanskrit names for the deities. What I want from you is that you make lists like those below, of the deities according to your culture, and then post this in the comment section of the Comparative Mythology YouTube video on my channel. You can list them in the same order as below, or with the PIE names next to the names you list. You can also post comments with suggestions to alternative names than those already listed by me or others. Don't worry about the gender of the deities; Originally they were all defined as hermaphroditic spirits, and were only later anthropomorphized and named as gods or goddesses. Some of them became gods, others goddesses, and they were not anthropormorphized the same way all over Europe. They are still the same though, and e. g. any god of justice defined as a goddess somewhere in Europe, is the same as the other deities of justice in Europe. Please list the gender of the deities only when they differ form the deities listen in the PIE column below.
