Morning, evening and night they prayed the “divine services” of the Byzantine Church, and this study is the first to examine how these rituals shaped the way they wrote and compiled the Povest’ vremennykh let (Primary Chronicle, ca. 12th century), the earliest surviving East Slavic historical record. My principal argument is that several foundational accounts of East Slavic history—including the tales of the baptism of Princess Ol’ga and her burial, Prince Vladimir’s conversion, the mass baptism of Rus’, and the martyrdom of Princes Boris and Gleb—have their source in the feasts of the liturgical year. The liturgy of the Eastern Church proclaimed a distinctively Byzantine myth of Christian origins: a sacred narrative about the conversion of the Roman Empire, the glorification of the emperor Constantine and empress Helen, and the victory of Christianity over paganism. In the decades following the conversion of Rus’, the chroniclers in Kiev learned these narratives from the church services and patterned their own tales of Christianization after them. The ii result was a myth of Christian origins for Rus’—a myth promulgated even today by the Russian Orthodox Church—that reproduced the myth of Christian origins for the Eastern Roman Empire articulated in the Byzantine rite. -

Prokhorov, 2010 1 n several articles we have already compared the Russian% IUkrainian Baptist brotherhood, especially in its late Soviet form, with Russian Orthodox monasticism (first of all, with the not unfamiliar “monasticism in the world”).[1] However, this point of view perplexes many Baptist church members of our acquaintance; it evokes doubt or sometimes even an emotional rejection. The present article attempts to clear up the misunderstandings connected with the subject and at the inter% confessional level, in the context of church history in general, to demonstrate the legitimacy of the thesis of the “monastic way” of Russian Baptists, based in a certain measure on the Eastern Constantine Prokhorov is a graduate of North Christian understanding of holiness. ON THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDATION ABSTRACTS 19th May, Wednesday, morning session Tatyana YUDENKOVA State Tretyakov Gallery; Research Institute of Theory and History of Fine Arts of the Russian Academy of Arts, Moscow Peredvizhniki: Between Creative Freedom and Commercial Benefit The fate of Russian art in the second half of the 19th century was inevitably associated with an outstanding artistic phenomenon that went down in the history of Russian culture under the name of Peredvizhniki movement. As the movement took shape and matured, the Peredvizhniki became undisputed leaders in the development of art. They quickly gained the public’s affection and took an important place in Russia’s cultural life. Russian art is deeply indebted to the Peredvizhniki for discovering new themes and subjects, developing critical genre painting, and for their achievements in psychological portrait painting. The Peredvizhniki changed people’s attitude to Russian national landscape, and made them take a fresh look at the course of Russian history. Their critical insight in contemporary events acquired a completely new quality. Touching on painful and challenging top-of-the agenda issues, they did not forget about eternal values, guessing the existential meaning behind everyday details, and seeing archetypal importance in current-day matters. 1 Pagan Beliefs in Ancient Russia. By Luceta di Cosimo, Barony Marche of the Debatable Lands, Aethelmearc. [email protected] ©2006-2017 Slavic mythology is a difficult subject. The historical evidence is fragmented, with many conflicting sources and multiple later literary inventions. This is a brief reconstruction of ancient Russian mythology. The first archaeological findings that can be attributed to Slavs date to approximately 6th c. AD. The origins of Slavs are still debated. The pagan Slavic society was an oral society. Christianity, which introduced writing, was more concerned with eradication rather than preservation of pagan beliefs. No one really tried to preserve and record whatever remained, until late period. Then, there is some evidence recorded from the Germans who visited Russia in 18th c., but a lot of it is based on the written 15thc. sources, rather than eyewitness accounts. The 19th c. Europe saw renewed interest in folklore, and combined with rise of nationalism and need for developed mythos, a lot of what was left was recorded, but a lot was altered to make it more palatable, and questionable things (especially with fertility rituals) were edited out as not to besmirch the emerging national character. During the Soviet time, the study of any religion was problematic, due to mandatory atheism. Eventually, the study of the early Slavic traditions was permitted, and even encouraged, but, everything had to pass stringent censorship rules, and could not contradict Marxist-Leninist philosophy. So, people who had the material (in the USSR) could not publish, and people who actually could publish (in the West) did not have access to the materials. -

Father André Scrima – a New Kind of Fool for Christ Marius
M!"#$% V!%#&'!($* !e complex and often puzzling personality of Father André Scrima was misapprehended for a long time. !is article discusses the reasons for such a misapprehension and o"ers some possible explanations for his paradoxical behaviour. An overview of the reception of Father Scrima’s life and works shows a dynamic at work that can only generate optimism. His participation in the Burning Bush group at the Antim monastery in Bucharest was one of the most important formative experiences, where a wide cultural and scienti#c perspective was fused with an in- depth religious experience. Father Scrima may be better understood if we consider him the #rst of a new kind of fools for Christ, a kind that is well-equipped to face the challenges of tomorrow. Keywords: André Scrima, Daniil Sandu Tudor, !e Burning Bush, foolishness for Christ, hesychasm He was a man that would experience the enthusiasm of a child when a new decimal of a universal constant was discovered. He used to tame an unbro- ken sacred text in a generous hermeneutics by o!ering it the "re of certain astrophysical theories and blending them with the phenomenology of the opening one’s heart in a hesychastic manner. Could this be the reason why the impressive erudition of Father André Scrima is still hard to accept and to understand in the Orthodox ecclesiastical environment? Our hypothesis that will be dealt with in the current paper is that all the things mentioned above are not enough to explain his misapprehension: most likely, Father André Scrima was the "rst person belonging to a new kind of fool for Christ. -

COMPARATIVE MYTHOLOGY for MYFAROG Thank you for your interest in this project. Below (on page 2 and 3) is a list of names for the different pan-European deities. The PIE (proto-Indo-European) names are reconstructions of the Scandinavian names only! Listen in brackets are the names of the regions of Thulê (the world of MYFAROG), and their corresponding 'real world' inspirations (e. g. Roman and Etruscan for the region Troskenia). I am completely missing the Baltic, Basque, Celt-Iberian, Dacian/Thracian, Egyptian, Finnish, Iberian, Illyrian and Sanskrit names for the deities. What I want from you is that you make lists like those below, of the deities according to your culture, and then post this in the comment section of the Comparative Mythology YouTube video on my channel. You can list them in the same order as below, or with the PIE names next to the names you list. You can also post comments with suggestions to alternative names than those already listed by me or others. Don't worry about the gender of the deities; Originally they were all defined as hermaphroditic spirits, and were only later anthropomorphized and named as gods or goddesses. Some of them became gods, others goddesses, and they were not anthropormorphized the same way all over Europe. They are still the same though, and e. g. any god of justice defined as a goddess somewhere in Europe, is the same as the other deities of justice in Europe. Please list the gender of the deities only when they differ form the deities listen in the PIE column below.
