5 , Remember the Team .... . 25 Years Ago Thurles Sorsfi elds County Minor Hurling Champions 1985

With the excitement of the G.A.A.'s Centenary celebrations of 1984 becoming a distant memory, Sorsfields in '85 were eager to return to winning ways in minor hurling_ Despite much work and effort, a county minor title had eluded the dub since 1973, when Tom Barry hod captained the team to victory. With the founding of Durlos 6g in 1979 a new refreshing impetus drove juvenile hurling in the parish and by '85 many of these players were seen in Sarsfields blue.

The Mid Championship that year was played on a league system with Moycarkey Borris and SorsfieJds qualifying for the final. Moycarkey had easily beaten Holycross in the semi -final, while in the other semi -finol Sorsfields didn't have to puck 0 boll as Clanmore fai led to field a team. The Thurles boys led by nine points at half-time in the final and although Moycarkey piled on the pressure in the third quarter, Thurles rose to the challenge to nnish com'lncmg wmners. Thurles Sorsfields 2-10 Moycarkey Borris 0-6.

In the county semi finals , SI. Mary's, accounted for Rossmore, while Sorsfields looked very good beoting by 2-15 to 1- 8.

The county final at Semple Stadium on October 13th sow Sarsfields face St. Mary's, Clonmel. In a keenly contested game Sorsfields hurling croft was decisive. At half time they led 1-4 to 0-4 but a storming second half put the verdict beyond doubt, with St.Mary's only goal coming on the stroke of fulltime. Sorsfields hod won their sixth ti~e in this grade.

Scorers were-Andy Rossiter 0-5, Garry loughnane and Jim Woodlock 1-0 each, Noel Sheehan 0-2 and 0-1 each from Paul Murphy, Ronan Keher and Tom Sullivan.

Final Score - Thudes Sorsfields 2-10 St. Mary's, ClonmeI1 -7.

The Tom O'Hara Perpetual Trophy will be presented to the "MAN OF THE MATCH" in today's Senior Hurling Final. The Trophy is named in honour of the late Tom O'Hara from Fennor in the parish of -Glengoole, who served as Secretary of the Mid·Board for many years.

17 Referees Profile: - An Reiteoir

The referee for todoy's Mid Tipperary senior hurling finol is Tom McGrath loughmore/Costleiney. Tom is 0 member of thai well known loughmore dynasty of McGraths. He is on uncle of Noel McGrath who won two All Ireland hurling medals within a week, senior agoinst Kilkenny and on U21 against Galway. Tom first look up the whistle as for bock as 1978 refereeing mainly juvenile gomes. However, his commitment 10 his dub, where he played both hurling and football, meant that Tom could nol devote the time necessary to referee on a continuous basis. Since returning to refereeing a few yeors bock, Tom has officiated in a number of finols in this and other divisions in both hurling and football at all levels. We wish Tom and his officials well today in his first Mid Senior Hurling Final. We also wish Eamon Clohessy (Moycorkey/Borris) and his officials the best of luck refereeing the Mid Junior B Hurling Final.

Drom & Inch lotto, a fundraising success story!

In the troubled financial times we curren~y find ourselves, the very necessary work of fundraising has become ever more difficult for clubs right across the country. The generosity of the people of Drom and Inch towards their GAA club has been tried and tested down the years and never found wanting. Very successful fundraisers were organized in the past but this year the club, faced with ever increasing costs, began to look at some new ideas to keep our ship aRoat. Various plans were mooted by the ever hard working committee but one we kept returning to was the idea of a weekly Club lotto Draw. Nat a novel idea to be sure but in a rural parish possibly a hord one to organise. In the early part of this year a lotto sub committee was formed and many meetings took place at both ends of the parish. Advice and help was sought from other successful lotto committees and we were particularly grateful to Sean Treacy's GAA Club and St. Kevin's Soccer Club in Two Mile Borris for their courteous and willing assistance. With the help of a great many promoters and ticket sellers the Drom & Inch lotto was launched to great success in April of this year. Our model of encouraging supporters to toke out 6·monthly or yearly membership of our draw proved a major attraction resulting in on immediate and badly·needed cash injection inta our Club's funds.

Our community has really embraced the lotto draw and ticket sales have been tremendously strong. We hold our draws on Tuesday nights, alternating weekly between Donal Younge's of The Ragg and Sean Ryan's Rapporee Inn in Drom . Both of these establishments are tremendous supporters of the Club and the Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank them both for their fantastic support. Our most recent draw on Tuesday night lost in the Rapporee in Dram resulted in our first Jackpot winner with young Mark Conroy of winning a very nice prize of € 5,200. Heartiest congratulations are extended to Mark and his family on this fantastic win. Our Jackpot will now start off again at a healthy € 2,OOO for next weeks draw. The main reasons for setting up a Club lotto were obviously to keep our Club viable financially and maintain and develop our existing facilities. Already this year we have put new dugouts in place in Drom field . We are also in the process of upgrading our main pitch in Inch . New fencing, toilet facilities and nets are only port of our ongoing plans. It has proven a very happy circumstance of our lotto Draw that the Club has hod the opportunity to give back some financial support to deserving causes in our wider community. The local "lifesavers" Defibrillator Committee, Suir Haven Hospice Group and Drom & Inch Juvenile Camegie Club have all benefitted from

Did You Know??

The reason the 1887 All Ireland Hurling Finol did nol take place until 1888 was because of a disogreement within Central Council. At their meeting held in Limerick in April '87, the President, Maurice Davin, resigned. After the intervention of Archbishop Croke later in the year, Davin returned to the office as President. It was in 1887 that the provincial championships, the parish rule and a whis~e for the referee were all introduced.

The late Bob Stakelum - Mid Boord President 1993-2010.

The Mid Board and The Gaels of Tipperary were soddened at the passing of our President earlier this year. Bob was a excellent historian and story teller. His contributions at our annual Awards Presentation nights were well worth attending just to hear his stories of bygone days and gomes. Bob won Mid and County Senior Hurling Championships with Holycross/Bollycahill in '48, '51 and '54. He was also a noted referee and took charge of the 1955 All Ireland Senior Hurling Final and the 1956 Munster Senior Hurling Final. He also refereed the 1954 and '55 Munster Senior Foolball Finals. Bob was elected to the Mid Tipperary Board Hall of Fame in 1999. Ar Dheis De go Raibh Ar Anam.
