This is important in providing a sound basis for the Local Plan policies and development decisions, as well as for the formulation of proposals for the preservation and enhancement of the character or appearance of the area. The Conservation Area was designated in 1975. This Statement includes a review of the Wilsford Conservation Area and is intended for all those with an interest in the village, or undertaking work on the buildings, landscape, roads or public spaces. It is also essential reading for The approach from the east is adjacent the Avon anyone contemplating development within the area. By drawing attention to the distinctive features of Wilsford it is intended that its character will be protected and enhanced for the benefit of this and future generations. LOCATION Wilsford is close to the centre of Wiltshire 6.5 miles south east of Devizes in the west part of the Vale of Pewsey half a mile north of Salisbury Plain and close to the River Avon. Parish Summary The parish of North Newnton is in Pewsey Community Area within the local authority area of Wiltshire. The parish is comprised of three hamlets: North Newnton, Bottlesford and Hilcott which lie in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in the Vale of Pewsey. Part of Hilcott is a conservation area. There are many great walks in the area suitable for dogs and bridleways for horses. There are several listed buildings, and three working farms in this traditional rural parish. The village hall, set back from the road in Hilcott, has seating up to 60 people with kitchen and toilet facilities, the hall is available for hire. There is a Community Coffee Morning on the third Saturday of the month from 10:30 to 12.00. There is usually a raffle and it is an excellent opportunity to meet friends old and new.     Kellys Directory Extract 1867 Beechingstoke Beechingstoke is a parish and village, in the Northern division of the county, Swanborough hundred, diocese of Sarum, archdeaconry of Wilts, rural deanery of Avebury, and the petty sessions division, union and county court district of Devizes, situate 7 miles east from that town, and one mile and a half from Woodborough railway station. The church of St. Stephen is a small structure, in the Second Pointed style of architecture, having a nave and chancel, with a small eastern gable pierced for 2 bells: the building was restored in 1861, and contains stained memorial windows. The register dates from 1566. The living is a rectory, value £285, with 33 acres of glebe land and residence, in the gift of G. W. H. Heneage, Esq., and held by the Rev. Richard Nicholson, M.A., of Oriel College, Oxford. Here is a Parochial school, with a house for the master. There is a charity, called the Mayow charity, bequeathed by a former rector, of the annual value of £3, to provide clothing for the old and bibles and prayer-books for the young, who shall be regular attendants of the church. The Earl of Normanton is lord of the manor, and, with Mrs. Bruges, who holds under Corpus Christi College, principal landowners. The soil and subsoil are greensand, with a little clay.
