AND A VARIETY OF OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION. ALSO A POSTOFFICE DIRECTORY OF OHIO. COMPILED AND PUBLISHED BY . B. MONTGOMERY & CO., DETROIT, MICH. PORTSMOUTH, OHIO: Printed at the Tribune and Republican Book and Job Rooms. i T F I I J PREFACE. In presenting to the public our first Directory of Portsmouth, we do so believing that it will be found more complete and reliable than any previous Directory. Notwithstanding the fact that omissions’and errors may be discovered, we claim for the work an accuracy and neatness seldom exhibited in a book of its kind. We have aimed to make our work a fit representative of the public spirit and importance of the City of Portsmouth, and an accurate and com plete guide to all public places, business locations, and private residences of the inhabitants of the city. The Business Directory contains a classified list of all trades, professions and pursuits in the city, alphabetically arranged, thus exhibiting at a glance the special business of each citizen. The miscellaneous department contains much information useful to both cititzen and stranger. As the architect, after long, anxious labor, views with satisfaction the completion of a pet task he has worked early and late to accomplish, and amid the assembled crowd gathered to gaze upon the work of his genius, he stands waiting for something more—their approbation and applause—to him the test of his success; so the publishers of this volume, after long weeks of earnest endeavor to make a work satisfactory to themselves, and acceptable to the public, now send it forth conscientiously completed on their part. Yet they await a larger judgment and appreciation of their efforts—the favor and approbation of their patrons. If this be granted, it will nerve them to make still greater trials, with renewed effort to still further please. While thanking the business community for the generous patronage given us, and the “Press” for their favorable notices, also Hon. Elijah Glover for revising Historical Sketch, we desire to express our intention of issuing the Portsmouth Directory biennially, with the promise that it shall be as complete as it is possible to make it.
