Head. Clypeus: anterior margin medially without a dentiform projection, or distinct ZOOTAXA swelling. 1099 Antennae. Antennomere 2 pyriform (Fig. 11D), relatively long (about two thirds length of antennomere 3—Table 11); antennomeres 5–10 moderately asymmetric (Fig. 11F), each article 1.5–1.6X longer than wide. Male genitalia. Endophallus with sclerite x small, and in inverted position near basal lobe of phallus (Figs. 17D–E). Included taxa. This species group includes two species, C. basale Dejean and C. semirubricum Reitter. Habitat. The members of this species group occupy the temperate grassland, and tropical deciduous forest and savannah vegetation zones and are marginal in the desert and semi-desert zone (Table 17 and Fig. 24). Geographical distribution. The range of the basale species group (Fig. 16) extends in the Eastern Hemisphere from Palaearctic Afghanistan westward to the Atlantic coast of Africa, in the northern part of the Afrotropical Region. Relationships and chorological affinities This species group is postulated to be the adelphotaxon of the semelederi + schueppelii species groups. The geographical ranges of all three groups overlap broadly in southwestern Asia and in the northern part of the Afrotropical Region (Figs. 16, 18, 20, 21, 23). Coleoptera, Carabidae, food choice, omnivorous, granivorous ground beetles Abstract. Many species of carabid beetles are important pre- and post-dispersal seed feeders of herbaceous plants. Here we summarise data from dissections, fi eld observations, rearing and “cafeteria” experiments on 55 granivorous and 188 omnivorous species that occur in Italy. We tested the hypothesis that seed feeding carabids are restricted to taxa with pronounced morphologi- cal adaptations for manipulating and crushing seeds in both the larval and adult stages. The feeding guilds of carabids were rear- ranged into the following groups: (i) strict predators with long mandibles and predaceous larvae, often depending also on non-prey food; (ii) omnivorous species with stout mandibles and larvae of a seed-eating morphotype; (iii) granivorous species, feeding only on seeds with larvae sometimes of the scarabeoid c-form type. The seed feeding carabids in the Italian fauna belong to the tribe Zabrini (Amara and Zabrus genera) and to all the Harpalinae (sub)tribes, from Anisodactylini to Ditomina. -

Insects were collected mostly by hand and pitfall traps. The habitat preferences of ground beetle species are also discussed. In total 65 species belonging to 45 genera, 24 tribes, and nine subfamilies were found, whose six species are new records for Tunisia and seven species are endemic to northern Africa. The present study gives new faunistic data and better knowledge on the biogeography of Tunisia. Key words: Carabidae, taxonomy, new records, endemic, distribution, Tunisia. INTRODUCTION The family Carabidae, or ground beetles, currently includes about 40,000 (Thiele, 1977) to 50.000 species (Desender, 1987) but some authors consider it could be about 60,000 species (Gaston, 1991). Carabidae are the most abundant beetle families (Dajoz, 2002). They are located in all terrestrial habitats and represent a major part of the invertebrate predator for the soil fauna (Arndt et al., 2011). Their evolutionary differentiation took place during the Quaternary ice ages (Palestrini et al., 2012). Studies on the distribution and survival of many Carabidae species in different habitats serve to consolidate our level of knowledge of the environmental and climate change (Kerr et al., 2007; Vaibhao et al., 2013). -

Hovore, Compilers Introduction The Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorned beetles, longicorns, capricorns, round-headed borers, timber beetles, goat beetles (bock-käfern), or sawyer beetles, comprise one of the largest and most varied families of Coleoptera, with body length alone varying from ± 2.5 mm (Cyrtinus sp.) to slightly over 17 cm (Titanus giganteus). Distributed world-wide from sea level to montane sites as high as 4,200 m elevation wherever their host plants are found, cerambycids have long been a favorite with collectors. Taxonomic interest in the family has been fairly consistent for the past century, but the description of new taxa has accelerated in recent decades thanks to the efforts of Chemsak, Linsley, Giesbert, Martins, Monné, Galileo, Napp, and other workers. This checklist builds upon the efforts of Blackwelder (1946), Chemsak & Linsley (1982), Chemsak, Linsley & Noguera (1992), and Monné & Giesbert (1994), and presently includes nearly 9,000 described species and subspecies, covering the terrestrial hemisphere from Canada and Alaska to Argentina and Chile, and including the Caribbean arc. Adult Cerambycidae, upon which most taxonomic studies in the family have been based, vary widely in their habits. Some species are nocturnal, many are attracted to artificial light, and they also may be found at night on the trunks and branches of their host plants, or on foliage. Diurnal species also may be found on or near their host plants, but many species are attracted to blossoms of shrubs and trees, where they may serve as pollinators. -

Ditomina is a subtribe of ground beetles included in the large tribe Harpalini, with most species restricted to the Mediterranean basin. To date, affnities within Harpalini have mainly been derived from morphological data, and the placement of several genera within Ditomina has been subject to discussion. In this study we provide a regional molecular phylogeny for Ditomina with representatives from seven of the eight known genera from the West Mediterranean region, the Australian Phorticosomus Schaum, 1862, and selected Harpalini outgroup taxa. DNA sequences from two different markers, the mitochondrial protein coding gene cox1 and the nuclear gene ITS2, were sequenced and analysed from 19 taxa. Molecular phylogenetic analyses consistently support (i) the sister relationship of genera Carterus Dejean, 1830 and Eocarterus Stichel, 1923; (ii) a close relationship among Ditomus Bonelli, 1810, Tschitscherinellus Csiki, 1906 and Odontocarus Solier, 1835, which form a lineage well separated from Dixus Billberg, 1820; and (iii) the exclusion of Graniger Motschul- sky, 1864 and the Australian Phorticosomus from the subtribe Ditomina.
