The Cantor Column Reflections on Liturgy and Music

During the first week of August, I attended the national conference of the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians. Through the theme "God's People Sing: Abundance, Challenge, Joy" scholars, pastors, and musicians explored music and its relation to the church. Please allow me to share some insights and thoughts I gathered during that week.

The theme grew out of the idea that there is a ton of music out there (abundance), and not all of it is good. So, how to choose what is good? That is the challenge. Before the internet, Lutheran churches mostly used the synodically published resources, which are painstakingly put together to serve as the main diet of song for congregations. Now, anything is available to anyone, so we're back to challenge. Time and time again I was reminded of how important it is to delight in the law of the Lord (Psalm 1) even with regard to music. We should use the Bible to give us the words and ideas to sing and they should be centered on word and sacrament organized by the lectionary. How wonderful that our hymnal notates for us the biblical reference for our texts sung in the liturgy – when we sing the liturgy we sing scripture.

Following these guidelines still leaves us with an abundance of song and that is joy. But joy also presents us with a challenge: how should music be honored as a gift of God to be used for God's glory and edification of the neighbor (Col. 3:16)? Music participates in proclamation when it tells forth God's mighty deeds. By focusing on singing what God has done, the church can avoid the ways in which music is used to manipulate in the world. Many musicians in the culture are singing and jingling to sell, to attract customers, to influence for selfish gain. Being in but not of the world, focusing on the word and sacraments will keep us on the right path. Following the lectionary ensures that we sing through the whole story of God's work, not just whatever may please ourselves. Keep in mind that music may woo, but the word will win.

With high delight let us unite In songs of great jubilation. Ye pure in heart, all bear your part, Sing Jesus Christ, our salvation. To set us free forever, He Is ris'n and sends to all earth's ends Good news to save ev'ry nation. LSB 483:1

Growing a New Generation of PRAY-ERS ~Ellie Grimm

"Continue in what you have learned and have been convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation, through faith in Christ Jesus." 2 Timothy 3:14, 15

The apostle Paul was dying in a Roman prison, convicted as a follower of Jesus. He was alone, and had only his writing material. 1 and 2 Timothy were the final letters of his inspirational insight and passing the torch of leadership to Timothy, his assistant, his protégé, his "beloved son", now pastor at the church at Ephesus. These were letters of counsel, encouragement, emphasizing the importance of prayer and a faithful ministry.

Timothy had a solid Jewish training in Scripture from his mother Eunice and grandmother Lois. This God-fearing family helped shape his life, promote his spiritual growth and taught him the importance of prayer.

Every day in every way, we model our values. Parents in particular demonstrate to their children and friends what they consider important and valuable. Experience proves that children often follow the lifestyle of their parents, repeating their successes and mistakes, as well.

What kind of prayer heritage are you modeling to your children? What will they remember in later years? Will they learn to trust in God, asking for guidance, thanks for answered prayer? Are they being taught to pray for and with each other?

Impress upon your children, friends and others that prayer to God is a privilege. It is a relationship, a meeting with God who gives you His undivided attention, at any time. It is an integral part of life. Use the situations of daily life to teach your children to see and feel 'God's hand' each day, not just in church on Sunday. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, caregivers, the seeds you sow now, will grow in love, understanding, communication, confidence and security, and a closer walk wit God. Consider the dire consequences if we skip a generation by neglecting to teach them. Today is planting time…. "whatever a man sows, that shall he also reap." Galatians 6:7

"I urge, then first of all that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone." 1 Timothy 2:1 "I want men everywhere to lift up holy hands in prayer; without anger or disputing." 1 Timothy 2:8

If Jesus needed to pray, how can we do any less?
