It is distinguished from congeners in having a unique combination of the following characters: narrow snout, causing head to appear acutely triangular; length of pectoral spine 17.1-22.2 % SL; length of adipose-fin base 18.8-21.1 % SL; body depth at anus 13.5-16.0 % SL; depth of caudal peduncle 7.4-9.2 % SL; length of caudal peduncle 19.0-22.8 % SL; head length 27.1-30.2 % SL; interorbital distance 24.5-28.8 % HL; length of nasal barbel 37.8-48.3 % HL; length of max- illary barbel 84.9-96.6 % HL; smooth posterior edge of pectoral spine; forked caudal fin; presence of two light saddle-shaped patches on upper surface of postdorsal region; absence of brown coloration on abdomen. It is superficially similar to D. choprae from northern Myanmar in having a series of vertical bars anteriorly on the side, but differs from it and other species of Danio in having six instead of seven or more branched dorsal-fin rays, and from all other species of Danio except D. erythromicron and D. kerri in having 12 instead of 10 or 14 circumpeduncular scale rows. Key words: Rakhine Yoma, Thandwe, Danio choprae, endemism Introduction The cyprinid fish genus Danio Hamilton includes 14 small species in South and Southeast Asia (Kullander et al. 2009), as a rule diagnosable by distinct species-specific colour patterns. About half of the species of Danio have a pigment pattern that consists of one or more dark or light horizontal stripes (Fang, 1998). Among the others, Danio kyathit Fang differs in having the stripes broken up into rows of small brown spots, D. margaritatus (Roberts) has a pattern of small light spots on the sides, D. dangila (Hamilton) has rows of dark rings with light centres, and D.

These countries have a high diversity of freshwater fishes, especially described and undescribed species of Cypriniformes; together these species and other flora and fauna represent an extraordinary opportunity for worldwide collaboration to investigate the biodiversity, conservation, management and evolution of Borneo’s wildlife. Much of the fauna and flora of Borneo is under significant threat, warranting an immediate and swift international collaboration to rapidly inventory, describe, and conserve the diversity. The Sunda drainage appears to have been an important evolutionary centre for many fish groups, including cypriniforms (Cyprinidae, Balitoridae and Gyrinocheilidae); however, Northwestern Borneo (Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak) is not connected to Sundaland, and this disjunction likely explains the non-homogeneity of Bornean ichthyofauna. A previous study confirmed that northern Borneo, eastern Borneo and Sarawak shared a similar ichthyofauna, findings that support the general hypothesis for freshwater connections at one time between western Borneo and central Sumatra, and south Borneo and Java island.

It can be distinguished from congeners of the A. variegatus species group in having the following unique combination of characters: an emarginate caudal fin, the presence of 3-5 serrae on the posterior edge of the pectoral spine, an evenly-sloping ethmoidal region, the sides of head gently curving, 1+5-6 gill rakers on the first branchial arch, conical-shaped tubercles on head and body, the lightly contrasting colour pattern, and tubercles arranged in prominent longitudinal rows on the ventral third of the body. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Akysis pulvinatus, new species, is described from southern Thailand. It can be distinguished from congeners in having a combination of: length of adipose-fin base 23.0–25.2% SL, body depth at anus 13.2–16.0% SL, caudal peduncle depth 9.4–10.3% SL, head length 27.6–29.8% SL, head width 21.9–25.1% SL, length of nasal barbel 13.9–57.5% HL, length of maxillary barbel 78.5–105.0% HL, smooth posterior edge of pectoral spine, gently forked caudal fin with lower lobe longer than upper, yellow snout, and rounded pale colored patches on body. A possible case of Müllerian mimicry with the syntopic Pseudobagarius leucorhynchus is mentioned and briefly discussed. Key words: Siluriformes, Akysidae, catfish, Akysis, new species Introduction Akysis species are diagnosed by the anterior margin of the pectoral spine with a notch visible dorsally and the nasals with expansions beyond the canal-bearing region (de Pinna, 1996). Externally, they can be distin- guished by a combination of tuberculate skin, small size (typically under 50 mm SL), and a color pattern typi- cally consisting of yellow patches or bands on a brown body.
