Global Loss
350,000 women die during pregnancy or childbirth every year. 24,000 mothers mourn the loss of a child every day.
Mothers' Index
53
Norway tops the list while Afghanistan ranks last in the Mothers' Index. India ranks 73 in the list of 77 developing countries. Norway, with the highest ratio of female-to-male earned income, highest contraceptive prevalence rate, one of the lowest under-five mortality rates and one of the most generous maternity leave policies looks after mothers the best. The index was calculated as a weighted average of children's well-being, women's health, educational, economic and political status. Abysmal America
The US ranks 28th for having one of the highest maternal mortality rates (1 in 4,800) among the wealthy nations: a woman in the US is more than five times as likely as one in Bosnia to die of pregnancy-related causes; the under-five mortality rate is twice of that in Finland, Iceland, Singapore or Sweden; it has the least generous maternity leave policy in the developed world; it also lags behind in women's political status, with only 17 per cent in the House of Representatives compared to 46 in Sweden. The Low Mark
India has the dubious distinction of having the highest number of maternal deaths at 68,000 every year and under-five deaths at 18.3 lakh. Not just that, it also has the
54 greatest shortfall of health workers (doctors, nurses and midwives), estimated to be over 515,000. mosimage

This high level political event is scheduled from November 12- 14, 2010 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi
Co- Hosted by The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. This high level political event is scheduled from November 12- 14, 2010 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. Her Excellency, The President of India will inaugurate this global Forum on 13 November 2010. Invitations have gone out to UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon and Chair of the African Union, The President of Malawi. This Forum is especially significant as it is a follow up the UN Secretary-General’s launching of the Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health at the UN Millennium Development Goal’s Summit held in New York, 20 - 22 September, 2010.
“Each year, millions of women and children die from preventable causes. These are not mere statistics; they are people with names and faces. Their suffering is unacceptable in the
56 21st Century. We must, therefore, do more for the newborn who succumbs to infection for want of a simple injection: for the young boy who will never reach his full potential because of malnutrition. We must do more for the teenage girl facing an unwanted pregnancy; for the married woman who has found she is infected with the HIV virus; and for the mother who faces complications in childbirth”, UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon.
“Our meetings with The Partnership in India this year, to discuss the MDG’s 4 and 5 on reducing maternal and child mortality, have been extremely valuable on both a National and International basis. Together we have also tackled some of the most important related issues in India itself. These include the importance of increasing midwifery training, improving the strength and coherence of advocacy messaging in regard to reducing maternal and child deaths, promoting community and media monitoring, and addressing social determinants of maternal and child mortality in India, such as early marriage. During this year of very significant events, The Partnership is making a tremendous contribution towards progress. We look forward to even closer engagement with it this year and beyond”, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, India, Ghulam Nabi Azad. 700 participants from around the world and India, including health and development ministers, senior government and UN officials, donors, health care professionals, civil society representatives and academics will review the commitments made to the Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health and will identify action to be taken by the Partners. Over the past decade many countries have taken significant steps towards achieving the MDGs, but there is need for renewed energy and commitment in this last mile, particularly in regard to achieving MDGs 4, to reduce child mortality & 5, to improve maternal health. “This year, the issue of maternal, newborn and child health has reached the top of the political agenda. From the G8 Muskoka Initiative and the African Union, to the UN Secretary General’s Strategy on Women’s and Children’s Health, the world has agreed that it is time to join forces and act together in moving pledges to action”, Dr Julio Frenk, Chair, The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health. The Forum programme is being designed with the hope of directing all efforts towards driving the key goals identified in the Global Strategy; to strengthen our resources for accountability, to share the knowledge and networks needed to scale-up models for change, and to deepen our connections across sectors and across regions to enhance financing, policies and service delivery.

We must, therefore, do more for the newborn who succumbs to infection for want of a simple injection: for the young boy who will never reach his full potential because of malnutrition. We must do more for the teenage girl facing an unwanted pregnancy; for the married woman who has found she is infected with the HIV virus; and for the mother who faces complications in childbirth”, UN Secretary- General, Ban Ki-moon.
“ Our meetings with The Partnership in India this year, to discuss the MDG’s 4 and 5 on reducing maternal and child mortality, have been extremely valuable on both a National and International basis.
From the G8 Muskoka Initiative and the African Union, to the UN Secretary General’s Strategy on Women’s and Children’s Health, the world has agreed that it is time to join forces and act together in moving pledges to action”, Dr Julio Frenk, Chair, The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health
67 The Forum programme is being designed with the hope of directing all efforts towards driving the key goals identified in the Global Strategy; to strengthen our resources for accountability, to share the knowledge and networks needed to scale-up models for change, and to deepen our connections across sectors and across regions to enhance financing, policies and service delivery.

Partners’ forum on women’s and children’s health in Nov
Co- Hosted by The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, this high level political event is scheduled from November 12- 14, 2010 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
These are not mere statistics, they are people with names and faces. Their suffering is unacceptable in the 21st Century. We must, therefore, do more for the newborn who succumbs to infection for want of a simple injection: for the young boy who will never reach his full potential because of malnutrition. We must do more for the teenage girl facing an unwanted pregnancy; for the married woman who has found she is infected with the
90 HIV virus; and for the mother who faces complications in childbirth”, UN Secretary- General, Ban Ki-moon.
“ Our meetings with The Partnership in India this year, to discuss the MDG’s 4 and 5 on reducing maternal and child mortality, have been extremely valuable on both a National and International basis. Together we have also tackled some of the most important related issues in India itself. During this year of very significant events, The Partnership is making a tremendous contribution towards progress. We look forward to even closer engagement with it this year and beyond”, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, India, Ghulam Nabi Azad.

New Delhi, Sep 24(IANS): Health experts and political leaders from across the world will meet in Delhi mid-November to discuss the state of women's and child's health across the globe.
The Partners Forum on Women's and Children's Health to be held Nov 12-14 is expected to be inaugurated by President Pratibha Patil at Vigyan Bhawan.
The forum, co-hosted by the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH), is significant as it is a follow-up of the UN secretary general launching the Global Strategy for Women's and Children's Health at the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Summit in New York on Sep 20-22.
92 "This year, the issue of maternal, newborn and children's health has reached the top of the political agenda. From the G8 countries and the African Union to the UN secretary general's Global Strategy, the world has agreed that it is time to join forces and act together in moving pledges to action," Julio Frenk, the PMNCH chair, said. About 700 participants from around the world, including health and development ministers, senior government and UN officials, donors, healthcare professionals and civil society representatives will review the commitments made to the Global Strategy and will identify action to be taken by the partners. "Over the past decade, many countries have taken significant steps towards achieving the UN MDGs, but there is need for renewed energy and commitment in this last mile, particularly in reducing child mortality and improving maternal health," he said. PMNCH joins together the maternal, newborn and child health communities into an alliance of more than 300 members representing partner countries, the UN and multilateral agencies to ensure that all women, infants and children not only remain healthy, but thrive. The partnership is hosted by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Innovation for Scaling Up: Highlighting innovation in MNCH - political, financial, delivery of interventions, technology. Success stories will be featured. Engaging All Actors: Expanding partnerships beyond the MNCH community to include other health communities (HIV/AIDs, malaria), as well as other sectors that determine MNCH outcomes (water and sanitation, nutrition, education, gender, etc.) Events Events will begin on Friday 12 November with side events, site visits and an evening reception. The meeting will be inaugurated on the morning of Saturday 13 November, to be followed by keynote speeches, plenaries and breakout sessions through the day and through Sunday 14 November. Background In 2010, the global community is two-thirds of the way to the target of achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015. Over the past decade many countries have taken significant steps towards reaching the MDGs, but there is need for renewed energy and commitment in this last mile, particularly as related to achieving MDGs 4 & 5.
In 2010, many high-level meetings have emphasized the importance of maternal, newborn and child health, including the G8 summit in June, the African Union Summit on MNCH, and the MDG Summit/UN General Assembly in September.
The Partners' Forum in New Delhi in November 2010 is to recap commitments pledged through this important year and provide a platform for developing strategies and networks that promote accountability for those pledges. The program of the Forum will build on the MNCH Consensus and Global Strategy for Women's and Children's Health by featuring success stories in financing, delivery and accountability, identifying innovative strategies, policies and programs that can be scaled up for change.
The meeting in Delhi is significant also as it is five years after the 2005 Lives in the Balance conference, at which the Delhi Declaration was launched and The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH) was born. Today PMNCH has more than 300 partner organizations including governments, multilateral organizations, donors and foundations, civil society organizations, health care professionals' associations, and academic, research and training communities. This will be the second full meeting of PMNCH partners, following the first Partners' Forum in Dar es Salaam in April 2007.
