2015 YALE FOOTBALL GAME NOTES

2015 YALE FOOTBALL • 143RD SEASON • 14 IVY LEAGUE TITLES • 26 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS • 1ST TEAM TO 800 WINS •

ANCIENT EIGHT Dartmouth and Harvard are 2-0 atop the league standings with Princeton (1-0) third and Yale (1-1) fourth. Everyone else is still seeking their fi rst Ivy victory.

DEBUT Christopher Williams-Lopez made his varsity debut Saturday and caught seven passes for 30 yards. The sophomore WR from Duluth, Ga., missed the fi rst three games of 2015 with an injury.

LEADING THE D Sophomore FS Hayden Carlson had a team-high six solos and nine overall tack- les, while junior LB Victor Egu had a Yale-best 1.5 sacks. Egu also had nine total stops.

BIG BANG BULLDOG Yale’s biggest hit of the day last Saturday was Copache Tyler’s tackle for loss in the third quarter. Dartmouth RB Brian Grove took a handoff near mid fi eld and headed up the middle before he was run over by the junior DT with such force that it knocked the runner backwards for a four-yard loss.

STRONG DOG LEG Yale junior kicker/punter Bryan Holmes leads the team with 22 points while handling all aspects of kicking. He is 5-for-7 on fi eld goals, including a career-long of 44 at Lehigh. He has a 40.0 punting average with six landing inside the 20. Holmes has kicked off 20 times with seven going as touchbacks. . Holmes, Ivy League Special Teams Player of the Week after the Cornell game, is a 6-foot, 197-pound kicker who began his collegiate career as a kickoff specialist his freshman season before exclusively handling the punting duties in 2014. His 2015 responsibilities make him the fi rst Yale player to handle all three areas since Tom Mante in 2008.

COMEBACKS The Bulldogs have come from behind in two of the three victories. Yale was down by 14 in game one against Colgate and 19 in the sec- ond contest before marching back to victory. The 33-point combined defi cit was erased by the Elis outscoring the fi rst two opponents 42-7 in the second half. The Bulldogs erased three big defi cits last year to register victories over Lehigh, Army and Brown.

BLOCKED KICKS The Bulldogs lead the FCS with four blocked kicks this fall. Junior FS Foyesade Oluokun blocked two Colgate fi eld goals on Sept. 19. Junior DE Marty Moesta knocked down a Cornell PAT, while freshman DE J. Hunter Roman got to a Big Red fi eld goal attempt in week two.

CAPTAIN CHAMPION Cole Champion, Yale’s senior captain, was part of two high school national championships at St. Thomas Aquinas in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The Bulldog strong safety and two-time All-Ivy pick has 190 career tackles and four . Champion has started the last 30 straight games.

BIG DONATION Junior DT Jack Rushin recently donated marrow to a needy recipient. He is the 32nd donor that has come from the Mandi Schwartz Marrow Drive, which takes place each spring on the Yale campus and honors the memory of the former Bulldog women’s hockey player. Rushin, the nephew of Sports Illustrated writer Steve Rushin, only missed a day of practice.

CONSISTENCY ON THE LINE The fi ve starters on the Yale offensive line have started all 10 games the last two seasons. That is not the case this fall, but there is experience up front in 2015. Center Luke Longinotti has 24 straight starts, while left tackle Khalid Cannon has 14. Guard Jon Bezney and tackle Beau Iverson got their fi rst starts at Colgate this fall, while left guard Anders Huizenga has a pair.

BULLDOG CAPTAINS, COACHES It’s very rare to have an ex-Yale football captain on the coaching staff, but the Elis now have two. Paul Rice ’10 (outside LB, special teams), who joined Tony Reno’s staff in February of 2013, became the fi rst captain to return as a “full-time” or “primary” coach since Albie Booth in the late 1930s. Chandler Henley ’07 (TEs), who led the Elis to a 2006 Ivy title as captain, came back to New Haven last spring. Six Yale graduates currently serve on col-lege coaching staffs. Bob Shoop ‘88 is defensive coordinator at Penn State. Dartmouth has Kyle Metzler ’02, the running game and recruiting coordinator who focuses on the offensive tackles. AJ Haase ‘09 is graduate assistant with Iowa, while Josh Grizzard ‘12 is graduate assistant at Duke.

NFL COACHES Pat Graham ‘01 (see photo), a former Yale tight end and defensive lineman, is a defensive assistant coach for the 2015 Champion . He is in his seventh season at Foxboro. Graham, a Waterbury, Conn., native, was a member of Yale’s 1999 Ivy title team. Michael McDaniel ‘05 is in his ninth NFL campaign and fi rst as offensive assistant with Atlanta. Last year, he was a receivers coach with the . He also coached the , and Washington Redskins. The Yalie with the longest NFL tenure (player/coach) in Ivy history is Dick Jauron ‘73, who played eight seasons between two teams and then spent 32 years as a coach. His last was 2012 with Cleveland.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN It’s not easy to make a schedule, which is drawn out many years in advance with potential mov-ing parts. This fall just happened to shake out with a school-record (low) four home games for the Elis. Last year, Yale had six at home, this fall it’s six on the road.

LAST YEAR Here’s what the Bulldogs did in 2014. Ranked 22nd among 124 FCS teams by NCAA simple rating system; Team (FWAA Team of Week) – Sept. 27 win over Army FCS Top 5 Stats: Total Offense (571.5) – 1; Third-Downs (.517) – 1; Scoring (41.3) – 3; Passing (323.6) – 5th Major School (modern) Records Broken: Scoring, 411 points; Touchdowns, 53; Total Plays, 836; Total Offense: 5,715 yards; First Downs in a game, 36 vs. Army National Stats Leaders: Receiving Yards per game - Grant Wallace (113.0); Scoring – Tyler Varga (15.6)

VARGA Tyler Varga ’15, Yale’s All-American running back, made the 53-man roster. Varga played in all four Indy pre-season games and fi nished with 18 carries for 69 yards, includ- ing a against the Rams on Aug. 29. He had fi ve receptions for 36 yards, made a tackle on special teams and returned a pair of kickoffs. He has played in three of the four regular season games, returning kicks, playing on other special teams and get-ting into the offensive backfi eld on third downs.

2015 YALE FOOTBALL GAME NOTES

2015 YALE FOOTBALL • 143RD SEASON • 14 IVY LEAGUE TITLES • 26 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS • 1ST TEAM TO 800 WINS • CAPTAIN PERFECT This past summer we mourned the loss of former Yale and Bears captain Mike Pyle ‘61, who led the Bulldogs to their last perfect season in 1960. The 2015 Elis honor the fallen legend with a “Pyle 59” sticker on the back of their helmets. The 1960 team will gather on Nov. 21 at Yale Bowl for The Game.

WALK OF FAME Chris Getman ’64, an ex-Yale player, has been “pitching” for Yale since 1983. The former lefty hurler has been the caretaker of the school mascot – walking the sidelines of home games - since former AD Frank Ryan asked him to take the role. Getman, whose role at Yale encompasses much more than games at the Bowl, is a community leader and a highly successful owner of Soundview Capital Management Corp. He is on his fourth Yale mascot. Sherman, the 17th edition of Handsome Dan, is eight years old and weighs 65 pounds.

IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME The last time a head coach brought two different teams to the Bowl to play Yale in consecutive years was Earl “Red” Blaik with Dart- mouth in 1940 (Yale win, 13-7) and then Army in 1941 (20-7 Army). When Columbia comes to town on Halloween, Al Bagnoli will become the next guy to do that. The former Penn coach, who brought the Quakers to the Bowl in 2014, took over this year at Morn- ingside Heights.

IN OT Yale is now 6-3 in OT games after the win against Army in 2014. The Elis are 4-1 at home in extra sessions, the only loss against Har- vard in triple OT in 2005. Yale has a pair of triple-session OTs (Penn, 2007) and a two dou-ble-dippers (Princeton, 2003; Holy Cross, 2008)

TONY RENO Joel E. Smilow ‘54 Head Coach

Anthony (Tony) Reno became the Joel E. Smilow ‘54 Head Coach of Yale Football on Jan. 12, 2012. The 34th head coach of the Bulldogs came back to the program after serving as an assistant at Yale and Har- 2015 YALEFOOTBALL vard. Since returning to New Haven, the Elis went from two wins to fi ve in 2013 and then eight last fall.

Yale’s 2014 campaign brought much national attention back to New Haven’s gridiron. Not only was it the Yale Bowl’s 100th anniversary, it was a remarkable season for the Bulldogs, who went 8-2 and had a shot at the Ivy title while ESPN’s GameDay broadcast live from the season fi nale.

The 2014 Elis led the FCS in total offense while TB Tyler Varga ‘15 led the nation in scoring and WR Grant Wallace was tops in yards per game receiving. The season included an OT win over Army and an award for the nation’s team of the week by the College Football Writer’s Assocation of America. Reno was also honored as a fi nalist for the 2014 Eddie Robinson Award.

His 2013 Yale team made national news by beating a ranked Cal Poly team on the road in October. His Bull- dogs also produced numerous league and national honors.

Reno, the Harvard special teams coordinator and defensive secondary coach from 2009 to 2011, helped en- gineer an undefeated 2011 Ivy League Championship team, which earned a No. 14 Football Championship Subdivision National Ranking. Three of his Crimson special teams units were ranked statistically among the nation’s top 20 in 2011.

The 40-year-old Oxford, Mass., native and a 1997 Worcester State College graduate, helped develop 10 All-Ivy players and an All-American over the last two seasons in Boston. His defensive backs enabled the Crimson to lead the league in scoring defense while earning impressive national rankings in numerous categories.

Reno, who spent six years in New Haven and rose to assistant head coach under Jack Siedlecki, helped the Bulldogs win a 2006 Ivy title. He was Yale’s wide receivers coach in 2003 and the defensive secondary leader from 2004 to 2008. His 2003 receivers played an integral role in the Blue’s No. 2 national ranking in total of- fense. When he took over the Eli defensive backs, they helped the defense rise to new heights. The 2007 and 2008 Bulldogs were No. 1 in FCS scoring defense, while 14 of his players earned all-league honors during his Yale tenure.

A 2002 AFLAC/Coach Magazine National Assistant of the Year Award winner, Reno served as Worcester State’s defensive coordinator from 1998 to 2002. The Lancers, who made two post-season appearances and went 27-5 with Reno as defensive coordinator, were 2001 ECAC Northeast Champions and made it to the title game the following year.

Reno, whose fi rst job was defensive assistant coach at King’s (Pa.) College for the 1997 season, earned a de- gree in history before completing a master’s of science in health education from WSC in 2000. As a player at WSC, Reno was a three-year starter at free safety, and his team was league champion his last two seasons. His 1996 team led the nation in scoring, rushing and pass effi ciency defense.

Reno is the fi rst Yale football head coach from since ‘10 in 1910. He and his wife, Toni, have three children: Dante, Angelina and Vince.
