More than 100 districts gave formal notice of interest in adding pre-K last October. • 80,000 four-year-olds across the state – mostly outside New York City – still have no full-day pre-K. -

With only five days left, the time to work together and act is now. Action is needed to protect crucial state funding for schools from each of the districts that we represent. Linking essential school funding with the implementation of a teacher evaluation system which has been universally discredited and rushed makes little sense. Moreover, evidence demonstrates that many schools are having difficulty meeting the Albany-mandated criteria, raising deep concerns that the impending deadline will negatively impact public students. So far, only 121 out of the over 700 school districts in the state have submitted evaluation plans. Our children’s education is too important for partisan politics. That is why I urge you to join me in doing the right thing for our children, families and schools by signing on to my letter urging Majority Leader Flanagan to bring Senate Bill S.7632 to the floor for a vote. By putting partisanship aside and working together we can ensure all of New York’s public school districts receive the state funds they were promised. -

June 11, 2011 The Honorable Mitch McConnell Majority Leader Unites States Senate Washington, DC 20510 Dear Leader McConnell, As proud New York Republicans, we are writing to make the case for significant additional federal funding for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). The nearly $4 billion directed to the MTA in the CARES Act approved by Congress and signed by President Trump has been crucial in allowing the agency to continue running service. But it is ultimately not enough to meet the full need. We are asking Congress to act again and provide an additional $3.9 billion to support the MTA’s operations through 2020. A failing MTA will be a huge blow not just to New York, but the country as a whole as it seeks to rebound economically from the COVID-19 global pandemic. New York has been the epicenter of this crisis in the United States. The essential workers on the frontlines who have rightly received so much praise and appreciation depend on mass transit to get to their critical jobs. Healthcare providers, pharmacists, first responders and grocery store workers cannot be left stranded at the time when they’re needed most. As this pandemic subsides, the need for a robust transportation network will only be greater. The MTA has always been the economic lifeblood of the New York metropolitan region. The system connects more than 15 million residents across New York City, Long Island, Westchester and Connecticut with employment and educational opportunities that help drive the downstate economy, which accounts for nearly 10 percent of the national GDP. -

Today, Senator Rob Ortt (R,C,I,Ref-North Tonawanda) and his colleagues in the Senate called for multiple public forums to be held in various rural communities so that residents may properly ask questions and voice their opinions regarding the Farmworkers Fair Labor Practices Act. The Act, which was proposed by Sen. Jessica Ramos of Queens, would make sweeping changes to the state’s agriculture industry and allow seasonal, part-time workers to unionize, leading to higher labor costs for family farms. Also joining Sen. Rob Ortt in calling for multiple public forums was Sen. Fred Akshar, Sen. Daphne Jordan, Sen. James L. Seward, Sen. Robert E. Antonacci, Sen. Patty Ritchie, Sen. Patrick M. Gallivan, Sen. Pam Helming, Sen. George A. Amedore, Jr., Sen. Chris Jacobs, Sen. Sue Serino, Sen. Thomas F. O’Mara, and Sen. Betty Little. “Owning and running a successful farm in New York has become more difficult than ever before,” said Sen. Ortt. “In the last five years, approximately 20 percent of New York’s dairy farms have been forced to close their doors, and legislation like this bill could be the final nail in the coffin for countless more family-owned farms across our state. It is paramount that a thorough round of public forums is held from Niagara County to Suffolk so that those communities that will be impacted most by this legislation have their opportunity to let legislators know that they think.” In a study conducted by Farm Credit East, it is estimated that the Farmworkers Fair Labor Practices Act would add at least $299 million of costs on the backs of New York’s farming community, which would reduce net farm income by a staggering 23 percent. -

Andrea Stewart-Cousins Majority Leader of the New York State Senate Legislative Office Building 907 Albany, NY 12247 Dear Governor Cuomo, Speaker Heastie, and Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins: On behalf of the New York City Bar Association (“City Bar”), we write to express our continued support for the bail reforms enacted in last year’s budget that became effective last month.1 The City Bar is an organization of more than 24,000 members dedicated to improving the administration of justice, with a long record of commenting on and testifying about statutes, programs, and policies relating to the reform of the New York criminal justice system. We are cognizant of the pressures created by recent attacks on bail reform but we urge you to keep these vital changes intact for long enough to permit thoughtful study and analysis of the effects of the changes. We urge you to resist calls to act precipitously to reconsider a reform that has only been on the books for a matter of weeks. The City Bar has long supported the Governor and State Legislature’s dedicated efforts to fix New York’s two-tiered bail system, which has historically jailed thousands of New Yorkers each year solely because they were unable to afford cash bail.2 The reforms at issue were informed by studies showing that overuse of pretrial detention not only disproportionately affects poor and minority communities, but also makes New Yorkers less safe.
