702 ABC Sydney Announces Morning and Evening Presenters for 2012 For immediate release Tuesday 6 December 2011 702 ABC Sydney announces Morning and Evening presenters for 2012 702 ABC Sydney today announced Linda Mottram will present the Morning program and Dominic Knight will present the NSW/ACT Evening program for 2012. Linda Mottram has 25 years journalistic experience, most of it with the ABC. She is a Walkley Award winning foreign correspondent who has covered the Middle East, Moscow and the Balkans for Australian listeners. Linda has presented the ABC’s flagship program AM, worked as Radio Australia’s Canberra correspondent, has worked in ABC News online and most recently been responsible for leading editorial training in the ABC. Linda says: “This appointment is as exciting and daunting as getting my first overseas posting. I am delighted to join the 702 team and be given the chance to bring the stories of Sydney’s people, in all their diversity, to a large audience on the radio, online and through social media. Engaging with the city’s decision makers and along with the audience, keeping a close eye on the issues that matter to Sydney, will be both rewarding and fun. It is a very great honour to host a show that checks in daily with such an exhilarating, complex, fun and fast changing city and its people.” Dominic is a founding member of The Chaser, has blogged for The Sydney Morning Herald, is a satirical comedy writer and an author. He has a long history with the ABC and an impressive background in the media, marked by his distinctive style and sense of humour. Dominic says “I am thrilled to be donning the iconic black skivvy and joining the ABC Local Radio team. Hosting Evenings will give me not only the chance to talk to heaps of interesting people, but the excuse for sleeping in that I’ve always wanted.” “I’m also delighted to be taking custody of Norman the Quiz, and will look after him as though he were my own child who constantly asks random questions.” Local Radio NSW Content Manager, Andy Henley says, “We are delighted with these appointments. Linda brings with her a wealth of ABC journalistic experience and Dominic will entertain us with the irreverent wit that has been so present in The Chaser work. They are both great additions to the station's already stellar line-up and join Adam Spencer, James Valentine, Simon Marnie and Richard Glover in creating relevant, thought-provoking and entertaining radio for Sydney audiences in 2012." Dominic starts his on air shift from 16 January, and Linda starts 23 January 2012. PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE BEYOND JOURNALISM: INFOTAINMENT, SATIRE AND AUSTRALIAN TELEVISION STEPHEN HARRINGTON BCI(Media&Comm), BCI(Hons)(MediaSt) Submitted April, 2009 For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Creative Industries Faculty Queensland University of Technology, Australia 1 2 STATEMENT OF ORIGINAL AUTHORSHIP The work contained in this thesis has not been previously submitted to meet requirements for an award at this or any other higher education institution. To the best of my knowledge and belief, the thesis contains no material previously published or written by another person, except where due reference is made. _____________________________________________ Stephen Matthew Harrington Date: 3 4 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the changing relationships between television, politics, audiences and the public sphere. Premised on the notion that mediated politics is now understood “in new ways by new voices” (Jones, 2005: 4), and appropriating what McNair (2003) calls a “chaos theory” of journalism sociology, this thesis explores how two different contemporary Australian political television programs (Sunrise and The Chaser’s War on Everything) are viewed, understood, and used by audiences. In analysing these programs from textual, industry and audience perspectives, this thesis argues that journalism has been largely thought about in overly simplistic binary terms which have failed to reflect the reality of audiences’ news consumption patterns. The findings of this thesis suggest that both ‘soft’ infotainment (Sunrise) and ‘frivolous’ satire (The Chaser’s War on Everything) are used by audiences in intricate ways as sources of political information, and thus these TV programs (and those like them) should be seen as legitimate and valuable forms of public knowledge production.

  • The Chaser Team
The Chaser Team Satirical Entertainment The Chaser is a satirical media empire which rivals Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp in all fields except power, influence, popularity and profitability. The Chaser is the group behind ABC TV series The Election Chaser (2001), CNNNN (2002) and CNNNN Live (2003) which together have lost a host of Australian and international TV comedy awards. However, their credibility-building run of losses ended in 2004 when CNNNN tied with Kath & Kim to win the Logie for Most Outstanding TV Comedy. In 2005 they won the Logie for Most Outstanding TV Comedy with the hugely popular, The Chaser Decides (ABC). In 2006, the team returned to ABC TV with The Chaser’s War On Everything, which won them two AFI Awards (Best Comedy and Best Comedy Performer for Andrew Hansen), as well as several court appearances. The show returned in 2009. Extremely popular in the corporate arena, The Chaser Team offer a range of speaking and entertainment options tailored to client’s needs. As hosts and presenters, they are beautifully irrelevant with just the right amount of professionalism. As after dinner and keynote speakers, they can present custom-written satirical songs and parodies of corporate presentations including powerpoint and trivia quizzes. More about The Chaser: The Chaser was founded in 1999 as a fortnightly satirical newspaper produced out of a spare bedroom by The Chaser Team: Charles Firth, Craig Reucassel, Julian Morrow, Dominic Knight, Andrew Hansen, Chas Licciardello and Chris Taylor. Since those humble beginnings, the Chaser team has lost its humility and has produced ClassicTM comedy in all media, including print, online, radio, television and Christmas crackers.

  • 'The Thin Black Line': Black Comedy and Its Descent from Subversive
1 The Thin Black Line Black comedy and its descent from subversive comic provocation to mainstream inglorious offence By Chris Beck A thesis submitted for the Master of Arts (Research) Swinburne University 2017 1 2 ABSTRACT This thesis examines whether black comedy still lampoons influential institutions and probes social mores with sharp satire and strong language or simply aims to offend for its own sake. It questions whether the freedom of speech that comedians in the 1960s advocated to defend their social and political subversion is now assumed, as a right, by comedians for the less edifying practice of humiliating people and targeting the vulnerable. Black comedy in the 1960s questioned our attitudes to politics, religious power, and sexuality. While black comedy In the 21st Century addresses complex issues of social importance it tends to do so through humiliation, deception and mockery. Black comedy is inspired by politics, protest, provocation and the broad array of experiences that could be described as the human condition. The Thin Black Line explores the intersections between social acceptability and social outrage. This study concentrates on prolific exponents of black comedy and treats the terms dark and black comedy as interchangeable. This thesis argues the political agitation that characterised much of dark comedy in the 1960s and 1970s has been largely replaced in the 21st Century by what might be termed superficial abuse, in that the comedy does not seek to right perceived injustices or expose prejudice, but aims to do little more than cause offence. The common element in the comedy being examined is that it created controversy by taking on taboo subjects, including child abuse and the sensitivity of minorities, such as people with a disability and various religions.
