Boron Depletion in F and G Dwarf Stars and the Beryllium-Boron
Boron Depletion in F and G Dwarf Stars and the Beryllium-Boron Correlation1 Ann Merchant Boesgaard2 Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, 2680 Woodlawn Drive, Honolulu, HI 96822 [email protected] Constantine P. To search for B depletions we have observed B in 13 F and G dwarfs with large Be depletions; for comparison we also obtained spectra of five stars which are undepleted in Li and Be. We have used HST with STIS to obtain spectra of the B I resonance line at 2497 A.˚ The spectral resolution is 30,000 or 114,000 and the median signal-to-noise ratio is 70 per pixel. In Silent Homage to Amaterasu: Kagura Secret Songs at Ise Jingū and the Imperial Palace Shrine
In Silent Homage to Amaterasu: Kagura Secret Songs at Ise Jingū and the Imperial Palace Shrine in Modern and Pre-modern Japan Michiko Urita A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2017 Reading Committee: Patricia Shehan Campbell, Chair Jeffrey M. Perl Christina Sunardi Paul S. Atkins Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Music ii ©Copyright 2017 Michiko Urita iii University of Washington Abstract In Silent Homage to Amaterasu: Kagura Secret Songs at Ise Jingū and the Imperial Palace Shrine in Modern and Pre-modern Japan Michiko Urita Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Patricia Shehan Campbell Music This dissertation explores the essence and resilience of the most sacred and secret ritual music of the Japanese imperial court—kagura taikyoku and kagura hikyoku—by examining ways in which these two songs have survived since their formation in the twelfth century. Kagura taikyoku and kagura hikyoku together are the jewel of Shinto ceremonial vocal music of gagaku, the imperial court music and dances. Kagura secret songs are the emperor’s foremost prayer offering to the imperial ancestral deity, Amaterasu, and other Shinto deities for the well-being of the people and Japan. I aim to provide an understanding of reasons for the continued and uninterrupted performance of kagura secret songs, despite two major crises within Japan’s history. While foreign origin style of gagaku was interrupted during the Warring States period (1467-1615), the performance and transmission of kagura secret songs were protected and sustained. In the face of the second crisis during the Meiji period (1868-1912), which was marked by a threat of foreign invasion and the re-organization of governance, most secret repertoire of gagaku lost their secrecy or were threatened by changes to their traditional system of transmissions, but kagura secret songs survived and were sustained without losing their iv secrecy, sacredness, and silent performance. -

Despite their close economic relationship since 1965, their conflicting historic and political relationships and deep-seated prejudice against each other have continued. The Korean government’s official ban on the direct import of Japanese cultural products existed until 1997, but various kinds of Japanese cultural products, including popular music, found their way into Korea through various legal and illegal routes and influenced contemporary Korean popular culture. Since 1998, under Korea’s Open- Door Policy, legally available Japanese popular cultural products became widely consumed, especially among young Koreans fascinated by Japan’s quintessentially postmodern popular culture, despite lingering resentments towards Japan. -

ASCII Art Classification Based on Deep Neural Networks Using Image Feature of Characters
Journal of Software ASCII Art Classification based on Deep Neural Networks Using Image Feature of Characters Kazuyuki Matsumoto1*, Akira Fujisawa2, Minoru Yoshida1, Kenji Kita1 1 Tokushima University, Tokushima, Japan. 2 Aomori University, Aomori, Japan. * *Corresponding author. Tel.: +81886567654; email: [email protected] Manuscript submitted August 31, 2018; accepted October 10, 2018. doi: 10.17706/jsw.13.10.559-572 Abstract: In recent years, a lot of non-verbal expressions have been used on social media. Ascii art (AA) is an expression using characters with visual technique. In this paper, we set up an experiment to classify AA pictures by using character features and image features. We try to clarify which feature is more effective for a method to classify AA pictures. We proposed five methods: 1) a method based on character frequency, 2) a method based on character importance value and 3) a method based on image features, 4) a method based on image features using pre-trained neural networks and 5) a method based on image features of characters. We trained neural networks by using these five features. In the experimental result, the best classification accuracy was obtained in the feed forward neural networks that used image features of characters. Key words: ASCII art, deep neural networks, classification, image feature, character feature 1. Introduction ASCII art is an expression that is often used on electronic bulletin board or on other Internet communication as a non-verbal expression. Because ASCII arts are multiline expressions, therefore, character-based analysis of ASCII arts is more difficult compared to emoticons. -

■ FEATURE Nobel Prize Dialogue Tokyo 2015 No. 51 2015 Spring Nobel Prize Dialogue Tokyo 2015 On 1 March, Nobel Prize Dialogue Tokyo 2015 was held in the conference hall at the Tokyo International Forum. Produced by JSPS and Nobel Media, this was the first time for this publically open-forum to be held outside of Sweden. From 2012, the event had been held under the title “Nobel Week Dialogue” around the time of the Nobel Prize Ceremony. At this whole-day event, a vibrant constellation of seven Nobel laureates, including Drs. Shinya Yamanaka, Koichi Tanaka and Hiroshi Amano from Japan, and world-leading scientists delivered lectures on science at the frontiers of their respective fields and participated in panel discussions. In the opening ceremony, welcoming messages were offered by JSPS president Dr. Yuichiro Anzai and Nobel Foundation executive director Dr. Lars Heikensten on behalf of the cosponsoring organizations. Then, opening remarks were delivered by Mr. Hakubun Shimomura, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. This dialogue on “The Genetic Revolution and Its Future Impact” explored the impacts of life science advances in such fields as genetics and genomics on future society. Among the various cutting-edge topics addressed were medical applications of iPS cell research, personalized medicine, and ramifications of genetically modified foods. On these and other topics inter-connecting science and society, a spirited discussion was advanced via a program of lecturers, panel discussion streams, and Q&A sessions with the audience. The curtain closed on this immensely powerful event with a panel discussion among exclusively the Nobel laureates.
