    2021 MOUNTAIN LAKES GUIDE Silver Lake ABSAROKA - BEARTOOTH & CRAZY MOUNTAINS Fellow Angler: This booklet is intended to pass on information collected over many years about the fishery of the Absaroka-Beartooth high country lakes. Since Pat Marcuson began surveying these lakes in 1967, many individuals have hefted a heavy pack and worked the high country for Fish, Wildlife and Parks. They have brought back the raw data and personal observations necessary to formulate management schemes for the 300+ lakes in this area containing fish. While the information presented here is not intended as a guide for hiking/camping or fishing techniques, it should help wilderness users to better plan their trips according to individual preferences and abilities. Fish species present in the Absaroka-Beartooth lakes include Yellowstone cutthroat trout, brook trout, rainbow trout, golden trout, arctic grayling, and variations of cutthroat/rainbow/golden trout hybrids. These lake fisheries generally fall into two categories: self-sustaining and stocked. Self-sustaining lakes have enough spawning habitat to allow fish to restock themselves year after year. These often contain so many fish that while fishing can be fast, the average fish size will be small. The average size and number of fish present change very little from year to year in most of these lakes. Lakes without spawning potential must be planted regularly to sustain a fishery. Standard stocking in the Beartooths is 50-100 Yellowstone cutthroat trout fingerlings per acre every eight years. Special situations may call for different species, numbers, or frequency of plants. For instance, lakes with heavy fishing pressure tend to be stocked more often and at higher densities.

    Land use and landscape evolution in the West : a case study of Red Lodge, Montana, 1884-1995 by Meredith Nelson Wiltsie A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Earth Sciences Montana State University © Copyright by Meredith Nelson Wiltsie (1998) Abstract: During the last 100 years, Red Lodge, Montana has evolved from a tiny prospectors’ camp into a substantial mining community and finally into a center for amenity-based recreational tourism and rural in migration. This process has been tangibly . preserved on the landscape and, in essence, exemplifies a case study in the evolution of capitalism. Indeed, Red Lodge owes its origins to the industrial era of productive capitalism and has evolved into an economy based on a postindustrial era of consumption capitalism. This study reconstructs changes in land use and landscape in the Red Lodge area through these eras and interprets how these changes illustrate broader processes of deindustrialization and the changing nature of capitalism in the American West. This research also identifies how local citizens’ own sense of place has both shaped and been shaped by these broader economic and cultural shifts. As a case study, Red Lodge is representative of a shift in land use and landscape occurring in many mountainous communities in the nonmetropolitan West. Abstract Fens are common wetlands in the Beartooth Mountains on the Shoshone National Forest, Clarks Fork Ranger District, in Park County, Wyoming. Fens harbor plant species found in no other habitats, and some rare plants occurring in Beartooth fens are found nowhere else in Wyoming. This report summarizes the studies on Beartooth fens from 1962 to 2009, which have contributed to current knowledge of rare plant distributions and biodiversity conservation. The study area is the Wyoming portion of the Beartooth Mountains in the Middle Rocky Mountains. Here, we profile 18 fens that occur over the range of elevations, settings, geomorphic landforms, and vegetation. The wetland flora from these 18 fens is composed of 58 families, 156 genera, and 336 vascular plant species—more than 10 percent of the known Wyoming flora.   • TRIP LIST Yellowstone Birds Bears June 2021
    Yellowstone: Birds, Bears & Wildlife June 9 - 16, 2021 With guides Carlos, Hugh, and Rick and twelve trip participants: Steve and Linda B., Edith and Wayne, Kathy and Bob R., Sandy and Cathy, Elaine and Linda L., Linda S., and Dave Compiled by Carlos Sanchez (HO)= Distinctive enough to be counted as heard only (I)=introduced Summary: A fantastic to one of the most iconic parks in the world. High temperatures and dry conditions remained with us for nearly the entire length of the tour, with temperatures soaring into the 90s on more than one day. The region is also experiencing an unprecedented drought, which might explain the paucity of some bird species such as Mountain Bluebird. Over the course of eight days, we recorded nearly a 100 bird species along with 19 mammal species. Avian highlights included Harlequin Duck, American Dipper, Sandhill Crane, MacGillivray’s Warbler, and Black Rosy-Finch, while Grizzly Bear stole the show for us in mammals. We even had some drama when a baby Mule Deer, perhaps just a few hours old, got stuck in a hole – but eventually got out! We also had a few wildflower enthusiasts on the tour, and we managed to key out about 26 different species and counting. Trip participants loved many experiences in the trip, but the day at the Beartooth Highway remains unchallenged as the best day of the tour on every Yellowstone tour I have ever run in the summer. BIRDS (97 species recorded, of which 5 were heard only): DUCKS, GEESE AND SWANS: Anatidae (17) Canada Goose Branta canadensis—common and widespread, recorded daily at most wetland sites.

All park roads close The first in a series of meetings that have been to the public at 8 a.m. on Monday, November scheduled to accept public comment on the Draft 8th. The North Entrance to Upper Mammoth Winter Use Plan/Environmental Impact Terrace, and Mammoth via Tower Junction to Statement for the Yellowstone and Grand Teton Northeast Entrance remain open year round, National Parks and the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. weather permitting. Mem~rial Parkway began Thursday in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Through November 7th, Lake Junction to Bridge Bay and West Thumb remains open from 6 a.m. The other meeting locations include: - 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays, with possible 30 minute delays. On weekends October 21 - West Yellowstone, MT the road is open from 6 a.m. Saturday through October 23 - Livingston, MT 1O p.m. on Sunday with possible 30 minute October 26 - Cody, WY delays. October 28 - Jackson, WY November 3 - Lakewood, CO Dunraven Pass and the Beartooth Highway have already closed for the season. All meetings will be held from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the exception of the Livingston meeting Groomed roads open December 1 5, 1999 at which will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. 8:00 a.m. for snow machines, snow conditions permitting. Members of the public will each be offered five minutes (on a first-come, first-served basis) to offer their substantive comments on the various alternatives.
