PEER-REVIEW FEEDBACK on the GOODNESS FIELD: a Guidebook for Proactive Nonviolence
PEER-REVIEW FEEDBACK ON THE GOODNESS FIELD: A Guidebook for Proactive Nonviolence Bob Aldridge's powerful book, The Goodness Field: A Guidebook for Proactive Nonviolence points out the need and opportunity for a Global Satyagraha Movement – nonviolent, active, creative, and compassionate – to challenge the US addiction to power and greed which feeds our nation's endless wars and empire. Aldridge gives some very helpful suggestions for how to build that movement. This is not a pipe dream. We, the world's people can make it happen! – David Hartsough Author, Waging Peace: Global Adventures of a Lifelong Activist Co-Founder, Nonviolent Peaceforce and World beyond War - - - - I am in wholehearted agreement with Bob Aldridge's call for a "Global Satyagraha Movement inspired by a Global Constructive Pro- gram.” I'm glad to say, also, that these very ideas are catching on. If humanity is to rescue itself from the materialism, the low human image based on outdated science, and the devastation that they are causing to our personal and social lives -- indeed for our continued existence -- I can see no other way of doing that than the discovery of what he calls the "goodness field" that science is beginning to discover and traditional wisdom has long spoken of, by whatever name. – Michael N. Nagler President, Metta Center for Nonviolence Author, The Third Harmony: Nonviolence and the New Story of Human Nature - - - - Every so often an elder, whose life has embodied the way of faith, peace and justice, writes a “testament” (as Jim Douglass rightly calls this book), one that peers well past what the rest of us see. -

Framing Trump: How Do the Trump Administration, the Guardian and Greenpeace USA Frame Issues on Twitter During the First 100 Days of the Trump Presidency?
• Framing Trump: How do The Trump Administration, The Guardian and Greenpeace USA frame issues on Twitter during the first 100 days of the Trump Presidency? Abstract: This paper analyses four Twitter users - @RealDonaldTrump, @POTUS, @Greenpeaceusa, and @GuardianUS - during the first 100 days of Donald Trump’s Presidency, and highlights the methods used by each user to frame contemporary political and social issues to their followers. It is found that each user frames issues differently to other users in the study, with contrasts most clearly observed between @Greenpeaceusa and @GuardianUS, on one side, and @RealDonaldTrump and @POTUS, on the other. These findings are supplemented with humanities scholars such as Marres, Scheufele, Tewksbury, and more. The paper relies on the Digital Methods Initiative Twitter Capture and Analysis Tool (DMI-TCAT) for data accumulation and subsequent research investigations. Key Words: Donald Trump, POTUS, The Guardian, Greenpeace USA, Framing, Agenda Setting, Twitter, US Politics. 2 Table of Contents Section 1: Introduction ........................................................................................................................... 5 1.1 Introduction and Research Question ............................................................................................ 5 1.2 Clarification of Research Question and Research Limits .............................................................. 5 1.3 Definition of Platform .................................................................................................................. -

Citizen Journalism, Alternative Media and US Social
Blurring the boundaries: Citizen journalism, alternative media and U.S. social movements. An exploration of alt-right citizen journalists’ coverage of the 2017 Berkeley protests. Elizabeth Louise Roberts Master’s Thesis - May 2018 Graduate School of Communication Master’s programme Communication Science Erasmus Mundus Journalism, Media and Globalisation Supervisor: Penny Sheets Thibaut Student ID: 11896663 Abstract This study qualitatively analyses the evolution of citizen journalism in the U.S., which has coincided with the rapid technological development of media tools, the rise of ‘fake news’ and a decline in trust for the mainstream media. In line with these developments, one U.S. social movement in particular has risen to prominence; the so-called ‘alt-right’, which advocates an anti-establishment, anti-globalist and extreme far-right agenda. The convergence of these two developing phenomena in the U.S., the alt-right and citizen journalism, represents the stimulating sample of this study, more specifically, their reportage of the 2017 ‘free speech’ protests which took place in Berkeley, California. Through in-depth qualitative analysis the study found that, despite their varying self-conceptualisations, the alt- right citizen journalists utilised the same journalistic tools and routines, and broadcast the same skewed narrative of events. Ultimately, their striking similarities provides evidence to support the notion that the six citizen journalists in this study were working together within an unofficial alt-right citizen journalist network. The implications of such a digitalised network, for both the mainstream media and the public sphere, are discussed in detail. Word count: 9,812.1 1 In consultation with my supervisor, and given the qualitative and textual nature of the findings, a word limit of 10,000 was agreed upon to reflect the complexity of the movement under study and the rich meanings reflected in the analysed texts. -

In the report, all 17 intelligence agencies unani- mously assessed that Russian President Vladimir Putin had personally “ordered an influence campaign in 2016 aimed at the U.S. presidential election” with the specific aim of electing Donald Trump. The assessment in effect concluded that there were two campaigns to elect Trump—one operating out of Trump Tower and the other out of the Kremlin.1 Since then, the Russia investigation has revealed a sprawling scandal: Members of Trump’s campaign, including those in the president’s inner circle, were in constant contact with representatives of the Russian government throughout the election and transition. The two campaigns discussed tactics and policy, including the release of “dirt” on their mutual opponent, Hillary Clinton, and rolling back American sanc- tions against Russia. And they executed their strategies timed to maximally benefit Trump’s chances of victory. -

By Muna Al-Fuzai [email protected] olunteer work is an act of charity that someone may decide to do in their spare time. But when a person Vsigns a work contract and works, they expect to get paid a salary. In fact, it is a requirement in religion and in law that those who do work be paid 0n a timely manner. But almost daily we hear stories from across the Gulf of foreign workers who sometimes go months and months without receiving their salaries. This is a blatant abuse of human rights and shows the lopsided and unjust system that allows sponsors to treat employees thus. How many of us would work for free for even a week? Now consider how you would feel not receiving your income for months on end and with limited, to no recourse with the authorities. We are all responsible before Allah for these abuses.
