2011-2012 Annual Report
2012-2013 Annual Report In 2006, a group of committed educational and community leaders participated in--and won--a competition to attract the KIPP network of high performing charter schools to Columbus. In 2008, KIPP Central began enrolling 5th graders and opened its first middle school, KIPP Journey Academy, in the Linden neighborhood. Every student at KIPP Journey Academy had one collective goal: do everything possible to climb the mountain to and through college. With over 90% of them qualifying for free or reduced-price meals, college seemed like an unattainable goal, but they used every moment at KIPP to advance toward college. They read hundreds of books, solved thousands of math problems, and wrote countless essays. After four years of tireless work, KIPP Journey Academy promoted its first class of 8th graders this June. The Class of 2016 took the next step in their journey to and through college and enrolled at some of the top performing high schools in Columbus. Some even received scholarships to prestigious schools like Columbus School for Girls, The Wellington School, and Thomas Worthington High School. With the support of the community, KIPP Central Ohio was able to change the lives of these students. Although this was our first class of 8th graders, it will not be our last. We look forward to helping many more KIPPsters climb the mountain to and through college in the coming years. Judge Algenon L. Marbley Hannah Powell Tuney Chairman of the Board Executive Director KIPP, the Knowledge Is Power Program, is a national network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public charter schools with a track record of preparing students in underserved communities for success in college and in life. -

Sub-4 Register 2021
The Sub-4 Alphabetic Register (1663 athletes as of April 13, 2021) WITHIN A YEAR of the death of the first sub-4:00 miler, Sir Roger Bannister, at the age of 88, the total number of athletes who have broken through the once historic barrier was already past 1550, and no country has kept greater faith with the legend of the sub-4 mile than the USA. Even during the COVID-ravaged year of ’21 there were 51 men who broke 4:00 indoors, of which 32 were Americans. Outdoors in ’20 there were 33 who enterprisingly did so in Australia, Great Britain, Italy, Lithuania, Norway, Switzerland and, of course, the USA. The total of US sub-4 milers is now 594, far ahead of Great Britain’s 215 and Kenya’s 152, with no other country yet nearing 100. The year ’21 has very soon passed another landmark, as Nick Willis, of New Zealand, has broken 4:00 for a record 19th successive year. The previous best of 18 was held by his countryman John Walker, but Steve Scott of the USA, is still the most prolific sub-4 miler in history, with 137 such times to his credit. Elsewhere, even the distant past has eventually yielded its secrets: a hitherto overlooked performance from as long ago as 1974 by a Bulgarian was not discovered until 36 years later! Bulgaria remains something of a mystery because another sub-four minute mile by a Bulgarian in ’92 (no venue or exact date) has only recently been caught up with! There are now 19 sets of brothers, including 5 sets of twins, and 11 sets of fathers and sons who have broken 4:00. -

PREFACE. 1 HAVE condensed into this little volume a consi- derable part of the local etymologies contained in " The Origin and History of Irish Names of Places." 1 have generally selected those names that are best known through the country, and I have thought it better to arrange them in alpha- betical order. The book has been written in the hope that it may prove useful, and perhaps not uninteresting, to those who are anxious for information on the subject, but who have not the opportunity of perusing the larger volume. Soon after the appearance of "The Origin and History of Irish Names of Places," I received from correspondents in various parts of Ireland communications more or less valuable on the topo- graphy, legends, or antiquities of their respective localities. I take this opportunity of soliciting further information from those who are able to give it, and who are anxious to assist in the advancement of Irish literature. IRISH LOCAL NAMES EXPLATKED. THE PROCESS OF ANGLICISING. 1. Systematic Changes. Irish prommciation preserved. —In anglicising Irish names, the leading general rule is, that the present forms are derived from the ancient Irish, as they were spoken, not as they were written. Those who first committed them to writing, aimed at preserving the original pronunciation, by representing it as nearly as they were able in English letters. -
