Communications Coordinator Job Description Part-time Position

About Democracy at Work Democracy at Work (d@w) is a non-profit 501(c)3 that produces media and live events. Based on the book Democracy at Work: A Cure for by Richard D. Wolff, our work analyzes capitalism ​ ​ critically as a systemic problem and advocates for democratizing workplaces as part of a systemic solution. We seek a stronger, fuller democracy – in our politics and culture as well as in our economy - based on workers’ equal collaboration and shared leadership inside enterprises and throughout .

We create the following media projects: ● Economic Update with Richard D. Wolff, a weekly TV and radio show, podcast & video series; ​ ● Global Capitalism: Live Economic Update, a bi-monthly lecture in NYC, filmed and released on ​ Youtube; ● David Harvey's Anti-Capitalist Chronicles, a bi-weekly podcast & video series; ​ ● Capitalism Hits Home, a bi-weekly podcast & video series; ​ ● All Things Co-op, a bi-weekly podcast; ​ ● Books: The Sickness is the System: When Capitalism Fails to Save Us from Pandemics or Itself ​ (2020), Understanding (2019), and Understanding (2018). ​ ​ ​ ​

We are a 501(c)3 but work to operate internally as a to better embody the ideals we believe are a critical part of effective system change.

About the position This new addition to our team will have the growing ability and responsibility to participate in shaping and directing the development of d@w. We are looking for a teammate who is passionate about our work and committed to our mission.

This new, part-time position is responsible for supporting d@w communications activities. Duties can be performed remotely, though a candidate based in New York City would be preferred.

This position directly reports to / collaborates with: ● Primary: Liz Phillips, Communications Director. ● Other d@w team members in meetings and as needed for tasks.

Job Responsibilities Essential Functions ● Help implement d@w communications projects and strategies. ● Help ensure that all print and digital communications: ○ provide effective messaging consistent with d@w’s mission; ○ reflect d@w’s commitment to economic, social, and racial justice. ● Contribute to d@w’s Email Communications: ○ Draft and edit materials and communications copy for our email blasts; ○ Segment email lists according to set parameters; ○ Send and monitor email blasts; ○ Maintain email list regularly; ● Contribute to d@w’s Website Communications: ○ Write and publish weekly blog posts according to established guidelines; ○ Assist in updating, maintaining, and improving website; ● Contribute to d@w Social Media: ○ Assist in posting on and monitoring of d@w’s Facebook, , and Instagram pages. ● Receive audience feedback through the website's contact form and respond and/or connect to the relevant d@w staff member as needed. ● Collect communications performance data; ● Manage the d@w Translation / Transcription Volunteer team, who help make d@w’s work more accessible: ○ Onboarding new interested volunteers; ○ Regular updating of the volunteer task sheet; ○ Regular uploading / publishing finished translation and transcription work to relevant channels.

Other Responsibilities ● Participate in weekly video meetings with the Communications Director. Attendance to Core ​ Team Meetings as needed. ● Contribute to special projects, programs, and reports as assigned. Might assist in book ​ promotion & marketing during a new book release, or help with d@w social media for special events, etc.

Qualifications Hard Skills / Requirements ● Minimum one-year experience in a communications role that included segmented email marketing responsibilities. ● Must own a reliable computer with active internet connection; ● Must have strong written and oral communication skills, with strong attention to detail and proofreading; ● Must have familiarity with contemporary socio-economic justice movements issues; ● Must be familiar with or able to quickly learn the following platforms and programs: Google Drive, Microsoft Office, Facebook, Twitter, TweetDeck, Instagram, Canva, Whatsapp. ● Experience with Nationbuilder is highly preferred. Experience with a similar platform, demonstrating the ability to quickly learn Nationbuilder, is also a plus. ● Experience with website management is highly preferred. ● Social media experience is preferred; ● Content creation (graphics and videos) experience is preferred. Experience with the Adobe Premiere & Photoshop is a further plus;

Soft Skills ● Must be able to keep information organized and confidential; ● Must be able to work independently and as part of a group; ● Must have a commitment to the mission and vision of Democracy at Work; ● Strong creativity, collaborative leadership skills, and the ability to self-start preferred.

Hours & Payment This is a part-time position estimated at 20 hours a week with a flexible schedule as needed to fulfill the role. Some morning availability will be required for meetings, but not on every day of the week. This role is compensated at $2,250 a month.
