Nigel Swift (West Police) to Natalie Davison (ACPO media) 13/9/12 11:41 Hi Natalie, I understand someone there may be staying in touch with developing national media lines re Hillsborough? We're keeping a watching brief from here, but if you become aware of anything further that imapcts on us/Sir Norman could you or whoever is looking at it give us a heads up please. From Sian Freestone-Walker (ACPO media) to Natalie Davison (ACPO media) Ta… not true… but thanks! I’ll drop him a line! S

From Sian to Nigel 12:54

Hi Nigel,

We’re not developing any national lines on Hillsborough. I think you’re aware of article we’re drafting with Andy Holt. Jason spoke to Matt this morning and will forward the final draft to the generic in box as requested.

Kind regards,

Sian

From Sian to ******** (********) 12/9/12 17:12 Totally ashamed to work in the policing field on a day like today… but so pleased for the families and for Liverpool as a whole…..

It might go some way to educate the minds of some!!!!

From ******** to Sian 12/9 17:09 I can imagine – all this Hillsborough stuff is horrific. Really shocking.

12/9 12:57 From Sian to Derek Smith Thanks ….. about time….. they’ve got to have a new inquest now….. there’s no other answer

From Sian to Natalie 12/9 13:06 Subject: Bettison-Hillsborough http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/215112.stm

From Natalie to Oliver Cattermole (ACPO media) 12/9/12 11:49 I’ll get cracking on the Hillsborough comment piece now

From Natalie to Oliver 12/9/12 12:58 Oliver,

The Hillsborough stuff is dropping.

There is detail here re the role of SYP and the Federation to brief . I'll send the PMs statement across in a bit.

It's quite damning of the role of police - 164 statements were altered - 116 explicitly removed criticisms of the police role. The PM went on to say police officers then used PNC to impune the reputation of the deceased.

From Natalie to Oliver 12/9/12 14:02 Subject: Urgent!!!! David Crompton wants to speak with Hugh and can't get through

Can you get Hugh to give him a call – Dave is on ******** or ********

He wants to speak to Hugh ASAP!

From Oliver to Natalie 12/9/12 14:03 He'll be free in 5 mins

From Natalie to Oliver 12/9/12 14:03 Ok – I think he just needs a hug and some reassurance. The report is quite critical of police – Cameron’s statement sums it up best.

Nat

From Oliver to Natalie 12/9/12 14:09 What's his number? Free now

From ******** at Merseyside Police to Natalie 12/9/12 14:10 No worries, its the same here too.

Cheers,

To ******** at Merseyside Police from Natalie 12/9/12 14:14 All incorporated .... i got my head in Hillsborough now – so any further amends will need doing by yourself!

From Natalie to Andy Holt 12/9/12 15:41 Andy,

Some more coverage which wraps up most of the salient points.

Just saw David Crompton on the BBC and thought it handled it well.

My bash at a comment piece is with Oliver at the moment for views. I'll ping it over when he's looked over it

12/9/12 21:26 From Emma Pyne at ITV to ACRO media mailbox Just wondering if you would have a spokesman to appear on ITV Daybreak live tomorrow morning about Hillsborough

13/9/12 8:53 From ACRO media mailbox to ACPO press officer Morning

Forwarded for your attention

From James to Natalie 13/912 13:31 Brigg Ford West Mids calling about Football Policing programme next Wednesday.

He just wants to let you know that while they will not question the interviewed officers on Hillsborough they will now be framing the piece in that context.

Any queries give him a buzz ********

From Natalie to Tony Conniford at Football Policing Unit 14/9 9:39 Tony,

Thought you might want sight of our morning summary this morning – given all the Hillsborough stuff.

We’ve done a comment piece for Andy which is due to go on the Guardian website at some stage today.

From Tony to Natalie 14/9 14/9/12 10:07 Thanks Nat. Not good reading.

From Natalie to Tony 14/9/12 10:41 Here’s the comment piece that’s going over to the Guardian today. He may to today as well.... I’m just going to have a chat to him now.

From Natalie to Andy Holt 14/9/ 10:48 Andy,

BBC World at One want to do a piece at 1.20pm with you. It would be live, one-to- one about the lessons learnt from Hillsborough. The particular angle they are interested in is whether football policing has benefited and in particular, given the news of the past few days, if the changes to football policing are in fact the right ones. What she intimates is that given the new information of the past few days – whether the “wrong lessons” have been learnt.

The point we need to make is that while Hillsborough allowed lessons, we’ve combined those lessons from what we have learnt from other incidents at football matches.

She also wants to know if Hillsborough has damaged the reputation between football fans and police, and she particularly wants to know the picture in South Yorkshire re police relations with fans.

I rang the office and I know that you’re at a police authority meeting, but would you be willing to do this? It can be done down a phone line.

From Natalie to Jason 14/9/12 10:49 The contact at the World at One is ********. It may be worth emailing her the comment piece from Andy Holt.

Her number is ********.

I’ve emailed Andy – he’s at a police authority meeting so just waiting to hear back.
