J.KAU: Islamic Econ., Vol. 23 No. 2, pp: 237-246 (2010 A.D./1431 A.H.) Muhammad Nejatullah Siddiqi Maqasid-e Shari`at (Objectives of the Shariah) Markazi Maktabah-e-Islami, New Delhi. 2009, 322 pp. Review by: Abdul Azim Islahi Islamic Economics Research Center King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia “Maqasid-e-Shariat” (Objectives of the Shariah) is the latest work by Prof. M.N. Siddiqi, first published by the Islamic Research Academy, Islamabad, and republished by the Markazi Maktabah-e-Islami, New Delhi. We have before us the one published from New Delhi. The subject of Objectives of Shariah has assumed utmost importance these days in the wake of numerous new issues faced by the Ummah in recent years. The Urdu language is spoken by a very large number of Muslim population and scholars in the world. But writings on this topic are very few in this Islamically rich language. Prof. Siddiqi seeks to fill this gap and wants to address those who master only this language. Since long time Dr. Siddiqi held that “envisioning Islamic economy in twenty-first century is better done with reference to goals of Islamic law. This will enable us to handle issues like poverty and inequality (observed in his Keynote Address on Islamic Economics: Current State of Knowledge and Development of the Discipline" delivered at the Round Table Discussion – Organized by IRTI during 26-27 May, 2004, Jeddah). He is of the view that there is need to differentiate between objectives of Islam as a way of life and objectives of Islamic jurisprudence.

Introduction Islam emerged in a society which already had an economic history. Despite the fact that the early Arab society was pagan in nature, they knew the value of earning and therefore traded. They were also engaged in a wide scale barter economy as this met their immediate needs and wants. Their would have naturally had people minting gold and silver coins since the prevalence of the gold dinār and the silver dirham bear testimony to the usage of these two metallic based coins as the store of economic value and as a medium of commercial exchange. We do take note that early Arab society had no standard mint. The coins must therefore have been produced by different goldsmiths and blacksmiths. However, the coins could be distinguished to some level or the other in regard to where they contained more gold/silver or more alloys.

  • Must Money Be Limited to Only Gold and Silver?: a Survey of Fiqhi Opinions and Some Implications(1)
JKAU: Islamic Econ., Vol. 19, No. 1, pp: 21-34 (2006 A.D/1427 A.H) Must Money Be Limited to Only Gold and Silver?: A Survey of Fiqhi Opinions and Some Implications(1) MUHAMMAD ASLAM HANEEF and EMAD RAFIQ BARAKAT Associate Professor, Department of Economics International Islamic University Malaysia, and Assistant Professor Department of Islamic Economics and Banking Yarmouk University, Jordan ABSTRACT. This paper attempts to provide a survey into the issue of money in Islam. Specifically, it looks at the views of Muslim scholars (primarily past fiqh scholars), on whether money has to be limited to gold and silver or not and discusses some implications of the findings of this brief survey on present day opinions. In this connection it discusses some general points on gold and silver as money, from a historical and ‘contextual’ perspective, followed by some points that are agreed upon by the majority of scholars. It also compares the views of scholars who take the position that only gold and silver can be used as money and the evidences given to support their stand with the views of those who do not limit money to only gold and silver, together with their evidences. 1. Introduction The discussion of money is certainly as old as the economics discipline itself. Early definitions of the discipline were even focused on money/wealth while most measurements today in economics are based on some money value. In the years since the 1997/98 financial crisis, there has been a renewed interest in and perception popularised by some that the Islamic currency as sanctioned in the shari’ah is gold and silver.(2) The crisis created renewed interest in the discussions and debates on money, the monetary system and even calls for a new international financial architecture.

  • Commercial Partnership in Islām: a Brief Survey of Kitāb Al-Muḍārabah of Al-Mabsūṭ by Al-Sarakhsī
TAFHIM Online © IKIM Press TAFHIM: IKIM Journal ofCommercial Islam and Partnership the Contemporary in Islam World 11 (2018): 79–111 Commercial Partnership in Islām: A Brief Survey of Kitāb al-Muḍārabah of al-Mabsūṭ by al-Sarakhsī Mohd. Hilmi Ramli* [email protected] Abstract Muḍārabah is a contract of profit-sharing known as partnership in capital and labour. Its concept and practices were notable in the history of Muslims specifically after its incorporation in the fiqh literatures that have spread to the entire education and economic institutions in the Muslim world. It combines two parties: those who have capital and those who are skilful in business to achieve a common economic objective underpinned by the Sharīʿah. This study analyses the work of al- Mabsūṭ by al-Sarakhsī (d. 483 A.H./1090 C.E.), an accomplished Hanafī jurist (fāqih) in the fifth/ eleventh century, pertaining to muḍārabah drawn from the analysis of the first chapter of the book titled Kitāb al-Muḍārabah. This study is significant as it fills the lacuna in the historiography of Islamic economic thought by focusing on al-Sarakhsī’s epistemic framework and definition of muḍārabah, as well as extending in its coverage from the individual * Zamalah UTM Recipient cum PhD candidate at the Centre for Advanced Studies on Islam, Science and Civilisation (CASIS), Technology University of Malaysia (UTM), Kuala Lumpur. 79 TAFHIM Online © IKIM Press Mohd Hilmi / TAFHIM 11 (2018): 79–111 to the institutional. It is a testimony of how Muslims conducted their economic activities based on the intellectual framework and moral guidance underlined by the Sharīʿah.

  • Islamic Perspective of Human Resource Management: Some Salient Features Shah Khan ∗
Islamic Perspective of Human Resource Management: Some Salient Features Shah Khan ∗ Abstract Islam integrates spiritual and material progress. It also integrates individual and collective growth and well being. It combines this world with the hereafter. It aims at developing all these aspects simultaneously. No aspect of the human being is allowed to develop unduly or at the cost of others. It combines its laws of (Ad’l) and spiritual morality (Ihsaan and Taqwa). In the national context, the Islamic principles of HRM can prove to be useful in dealing with the problems of in-efficiency, mis-use of authority in national institutions, myriad social divides afflicting the nation at large, which stem primarily from the HRM related challenges faced by these institutions and the nation. Application of Islamic HRM principles can significantly help in overcoming crisis in training, leadership, essential professional skills, knowledge and attitudes required for productive careers and useful role in society. In the international context also, these principles & practices can help tackle the challenges arising from increasing Muslim population across the globe in the realm of cultural gaps, diversity & leadership issues and managing effectively the increasing number of Muslim employees in the multi-national and multi-cultural organizations. The Islamic HRM practices are based on ethical values, trust and voluntary motivation, and consider employees more than mere resources as the modern practices do and thus focus more on HRD than HRM. • Muslim Intellectuals and the Perennial Philosophy in the Twentieth Century1
Sophia Perennis Vol. 1, Number 1, 2009 Iranian Institute of Philosophy Tehran/Iran Muslim Intellectuals and the Perennial Philosophy in the Twentieth Century1 Zachary Markwith Abstract: This paper will examine how Muslim intellectuals, as a result of their attachment to the doctrine of Divine Unity (tawh¤īd), the Quran, Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad, and the doctrines and methods of Sufism, were largely responsible for the restating of the perennial philosophy in the West in the twentieth century. The article consists of four sections: an introduction to the term 'philosophia perennis'; the place of the perennial philosophy in the Qur'an and Sunnah; the perennial philosophy and the Islamic intellectual Tradition; the lives, writings, and intellectual contributions of the five most important Muslim perennialists of the twentieth century, namely, Guénon, Schuon, Burckhardt, Lings, and Nasr The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the inextricable link between Islam and the perennial philosophy in the twentieth century, while defending the role that orthodoxy and orthopraxy play in any authentic expression of the perennial philosophy. Key terms: Perennial Philosophy, Rene Guenon, Frithjof Schuon, Titus Burkhardt, Martin Lings, Seyyed Hossein Nasr Number 1, Winter 2009 39 Muslim Intellectuals and the Perennial Philosophy There is an attempt from certain quarters to marginalize the relationship between Islam and the perennial philosophy, and specifically what Frithjof Schuon called, “the transcendent unity of religions.” On the one hand, some interpreters of Schuon and the perennial philosophy have denied, in the name of pure esoterism, the necessary religious forms and discipline which allow man to transcend himself, and have an authentic vision of Reality.

Religion/Philosophy of Science Zarandi Can the knowledge provided by modern science satisfy our need to know the most profound nature of reality and of humanity? Science “The great advantage of this book is that it puts together texts of authors (scientists, philosophers and theologians) whose lucidity about modern and the science goes far beyond emotional reaction and moralist subjectivity; and this ‘tour de force’ is accomplished from within the point of view of the Science yth main traditional religions. Here, Science and Faith are reconciled in an M unexpected way: scientific objectivity is not an issue; but the real issue, where one sees no proof of progress, is whether man is capable of using of modern science properly. A must for the reader who wants to sharpen his or her discernment about modern science.” —Jean-Pierre Lafouge, Marquette University rogress and the and P “Writing as an active research scientist, living in the present Culture of Disbelief created (partly unwittingly) by the science establishment, I can Essays by think of no Research and Development project more significant to the Wendell Berry future of humanity than putting ‘science’ back into its proper place as a Titus Burckhardt part of culture, but not its religion.
