ACTA UNI VERSITATIS LODZIENSIS FOLIA LITTER ARIA ANGLICA 4, 2000 David Gilligan University of Łódź ONCE ALIEN HERE: THE POETRY OF JOHN HEWITT John Hewitt, who died in 1987 at the age of 80 years, has been described as the “elder statesman” of Ulster poetry. He began writing poetry in the 1920s but did not appear in book form until 1948; his final collection appearing in 1986. However, as Frank Ormsby points out in the 1991 edition of Poets From The North of Ireland, recognition for Hewitt came late in life and he enjoyed more homage and attention in his final years than for most of his creative life. In that respect he is not unlike Poland’s latest Nobel Prize winner in literature. His status was further recognized by the founding of the John Hewitt International Summer School in 1988. It is somewhat strange that such a prominent and central figure in Northern Irish poetry should at the same time be characterised in his verse as a resident alien, isolated and marginalised by the very society he sought to encapsulate and represent in verse. But then Northern Ireland/Ulster is and was a strange place for a poet to flourish within. In relation to the rest of the United Kingdom it was always something of a fossilised region which had more than its share of outdated thought patterns, language, social and political behaviour. Though ostensibly a parliamentary democracy it was a de-facto, one-party, statelet with its own semi-colonial institutions; every member of the executive of the ruling Unionist government was a member of a semi-secret masonic movement (The Orange Order) and amongst those most strongly opposed to the state there was a similar network of semi-secret societies (from the I.R.A. -

On the Derry air” Seamus Heaney, A Birl For Burns, 2009 It is just one of our many historic connections with Scotland, expressing our shared heritage of the Scots language and literature on both sides of the narrow North Channel. A selection of Robert Burns Belfast artefacts, 1896–1966 2 3 Introducing Belfast’s Bonnie Burns Belfast is a city with many cultural influences, and the Ulster-Scots dimension is a proud part of that. Our history, our oldest buildings, many of our placenames, and our daily speech all still display an undeniably Scottish skirl and birl. So it’s no surprise that Robert Burns’ poetry has been enjoyed here for centuries, and his song collections include one that he acquired from Belfast, entitled ‘To A Rose Bud’. In 1792 when the Belfast church organist Edward Bunting organised the first Belfast Harp Festival which famously celebrated and preserved Irish traditional music, Robert Burns was already a superstar in our city. The Ulster-Scots community was by then almost 200 years old. Earlier Scots language poets had already been printed and read The 1787 Belfast edition in Ulster. Local poet Samuel Thomson of Carngranny near Mallusk wrote a poem to Courtesy Linen Hall Library Burns that same year: Sweet Scottish Bard! still as I read Thy bonie, quaint, harmonious lays, I aft exulting bless thy head, That weel deserves to wear the bays. -

Bodily Abjection and the Politics of Resistance in Tom Paulin’s Greek Tragedies Isabelle Torrance (Aarhus University) Accepted Manuscript Published: 21 December 2020 Classical Receptions Journal, claa030, https://doi.org/10.1093/crj/claa030 Abstract Tom Paulin’s Greek tragedies present extremes of bodily abjection in order to service of a politics of resistance that is tied, in each case, to the political context of the drama’s production. The Riot Act (1984), Seize the Fire (1989), and Medea (2010), share a focus on the degradation of oppressed political groups and feature characters who destabilize the status quo. Yet the impact of disruptive political actions is not ultimately made clear. We are left wondering at the conclusion of each tragedy if the momentous acts of defiance we have witnessed have any power to create systemic change within politically rigged systems. The two 1980s plays are discussed together and form a sequence, with The Riot Act overtly addressing the Northern Irish conflict and Seize the Fire encompassing a broader sweep of oppressive regimes. The politics of discrimination in Medea are illuminated by comparison with similar themes in Paulin’s Love’s Bonfire (2010). Unlike other Northern Irish adaptations of Greek tragedy, Paulin’s dramas, arrested in their political moments, present little hope for the immediate future. Yet in asking us to consider if individual sacrifice is enough to achieve radical change they maintain an open channel for political discourse. Paulin’s Greek Tragedies Tom Paulin has published versions of three Greek tragedies, reworking Sophocles’ Antigone and Aeschylus’ Prometheus Bound in the 1980s and returning to Greek tragedy in 2010 with his Medea. -

P1:FYX/FGC P2:FYX 0521822244c10.xml CUUK124B-Kelleher & O’Leary Vol-1 December 25, 2005 14:45 10 Irish Romanticism, 1800–1830 claire connolly Ireland entered the period of Romanticism scorched by what Quaker writer Mary Leadbeater called the ‘ruthless fires’ of the 1798 rebellion.1 Reacting against the threat of Ireland separating from Britain and becoming a client state of France, William Pitt’s government moved quickly to draw the neigh- bouring island more securely to its side. Ireland was in future to send its electoral representatives (considerably reduced in number) to Westminster: the uneasy constitutional compromise that was the Dublin parliament was concluded. Other legal anomalies were cleared up also. The Copyright Act of 1709 wasextended to Ireland, all but killing off an Irish publishing industry that was reliant on markets for cheap reprints in Ireland, Britain, the American colonies and the West Indies.2 More profoundly, the Union created a profes- sional literary culture characterised by movement between and across the two islands. A chapter such as this one therefore has to account for an ‘Irish’ liter- ature that developed both outside and inside Ireland: the vast majority of the writers discussed here either lived in Britain or published there, and London and Edinburgh play as important a part in the shaping of Irish Romanticism as Dublin, Belfast or Cork. Moreover, the experience of travel and cultural bi-location was itself to become an object of interest in the literature of the period. Romanticism and Ireland Romanticism across Europe took its political bearings from the Enlighten- ment, with its radical faith in social progress and human perfectibility. -

Hewitt's work is of crucial importance because of his insistently biographical style, and the length of his career which began soon after Northern Ireland was founded. The approach consists of close textual analysis of Hewitt's body of work and of material available in public archives, unpublished private sources, and from interviews with his acquaintances and professional associates. Chapters One and Two are a comparative study of Hewitt's, partly self-constructed, presentation as a martyr and the tarnishing of Samuel Ferguson's relationship to Ireland. Ö Analysis of criticism of Ferguson by Robert O'Driscoll, Greagoir Will and David Cairns and Shaun Richards reveals that he was increasingly traduced as a reactionary Protestant and purloiner of Ireland's cultural assets for the Ascendancy. A parallel study of Hewitt shows that he metamorphosed from neglected `exile' to `father of modern Ulster poetry', exemplary Protestant and icon of cultural liberalism. Chapters Three to Seven examine the use of Hewitt by Northern intellectuals, primarily Edna Longley, Michael Longley, Gerald Dawe, Tom Clyde and Frank Ormsby. -

(Brian Patten,The Story Giant) This exhibition celebrates the diverse and abundant talents of local writers who have had an association with the BBC. It profiles the work of poets, playwrights, novelists and critics and acknowledges their contribution to broadcasting and wider cultural and community life over almost 80 years of programme-making by the BBC in Northern Ireland. Poets and Writers looks back to some of the defining personalities and achievements of the past and forward to the creative possibilities that are being explored by a new generation of local writers. It chronicles a succession of social and technological changes and also the recurring themes and pre-occupations of broadcasting in a diverse society. Whilst no such exhibition can offer a definitive summary of all that has been accomplished, or work that is still in the making, what is presented here usefully illustrates the range and scale of material that the BBC has produced for local and Network audiences. BBC NI has a long-established and unique role as a supporter of the arts. It has worked hard to encourage creative excellence and remains committed to risk-taking and innovation, and to facilitating "those adventures of the spirit" that lie at the heart of all good broadcasting and literary activity. Preserving the BBC’s past, whilst building on its legacy by seeking out different voices and audiences, will present inevitable challenges over the coming period.
