THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE KNOXVILLE

FACILITIES SERVICES Specifications for Sanding, Sealing, Court Lining, Finishing, Resurfacing, and Repair of Stationary and Portable Floors

Procedures for Sanding a Wood Floor All materials and workmanship is to be of first-rate quality and the University shall be the sole judge as to whether the work is acceptable. If the work is judged to be unacceptable, the contractor shall make any and all corrections deemed necessary by the University at no additional expense to the University. All unfinished floors should be sanded with a minimum of three cuts, using coarse, medium, and fine . The final sanding should provide a smooth and even surface, free from scratches, drum stop marks, or gouges. After sanding, the contractor should thoroughly vacuum the wood surface with a heavy-duty commercial type vacuum to remove sanding dust and grit prior to sealing and finishing. Water-based finishes need a smoother surface than oil based finishes. Do not use tack cloths or steel wool when using water based finish. Tack cloths contain oil and will contaminate the surface. Steel wool will rust under the water-based finish if any is leftbehind. The contractor should at all times use measures to insure dust from the sanding process does not travel to other parts of the area. In areas where return air ducts exist, the system should be shut down during the process or return air ducts to be covered with adequate filter material to prevent any dust infiltrating the HVAC system.

Procedures for Sealing and Finishing (Schedule 1) The University is currently using Magee Waterthane 901 Premium PerformanceTwo Part Urethane Coating for new applications and refinishing. We wish to continue with this product. If any other product line is to be used, it must be approved by the University. The edges and tongue and sides of portable wood floors are to be free of overrun that causes the to stick or not fit together properly. The possibility of using oil-modified products may be specified for some products. Always follow material manufacturers' guidelines for application of sealer and finish, as procedures may vary from product to product.

Water-Based Urethane Finishes

Page 1 of 4 Always follow material manufacturers' guidelines for application of sealer and finish. Water-based urethane product will always require a minimum of 3 finish coats. The edges and tongue and groove sides of portable wood floors are to be free of overrun that causes the tongue and groove to stick or not fit together properly.

Oil-Modified Urethane Finish Always follow material manufacturers' guidelines for application of sealer and finish. The edges and tongue and groove sides of portable wood floors are to be free of overrun that causes the tongue and groove to stick or not fit together properly.

Sealing All unfinished wood floors should be sealed as soon as possible after final sanding is completed. Thoroughly clean the floor surfaceprior to applying the first coat of sealer. Following the manufacturer's guidelines, apply a uniform coat of penetrating sealer with at least the minimum coverage per the manufacturer's instructions. The surfaceshould then be prepared using the manufacturer's guidelines in preparation for court layout and painting for sports floors. Non-sports floors should go to the next manufacturer's step. Follow the manufacturers' recommendations for providing adequate ventilation during the entire sealing and finishing process.

Court Lining The University shall furnish game line drawings with complete color selections prior to the commencement of floor sanding and finishing of sports floors. Apply game markings using that is compatible with the chosen sealer and finish. Mask and paint game lines with proper colors according to the University's drawings and with the aid of precision taping machines or striping tools. When using masking tape, pull it up as soon as the paint begins to dry or set. After the game markings have thoroughly dried, follow the finishing guidelines furnished by the manufacturer.

Finishing Immediately before applying the first coat of finish, wood floors should be thoroughly cleaned using the manufacturer's guidelines, giving particular attention to edges and corners. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for applying water-based finishes. Do not use steel wool or tack rags if applying water-based urethane products. The edges and tongue and

Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for applying oil-modified finishes. The contractor shall work with the University during preparation, finishing, and drying time to assure the area remains free of air currents that carry dust and dirt, that indoor temperatures are approximately 65 degrees Fahrenheit or higher during application, adequate ventilation for proper drying is present, and normal humidity conditions are present inside the facility to avoid blistering, flaking, and abnormally long drying and cure times. The edges and tongue and groove sides of portable wood floors are to be free of overrun that causes the tongue and groove to stick or not fit together properly.

Maintenance/Refinishing (Schedule 2) Refinishing will cover both stationary and portablewood . Facility use and maintenance will determine the appropriate refinishing schedule. Before abrading the wood surface, walk the entire area to ensure that all foreign matter has been removed. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for preparation and application of finish. Touch-up any game line paint or markings if necessary.

Complete Resurfacing of Existing Wood Floors (Schedule 3) Complete resurfacing will cover both stationary and portable . The frequency of complete resurfacing will be determined by the University. A complete resurfacing is to be accomplished by first removing all layers of finish and game lines, where applicable, down to raw wood. Next, repair/replace any split boards or damaged areas of the wood surface. The wood surfaceis then ready to be lightly sanded to remove accumulated minor dents and scratches. Once the sanding process is completed, the resurfacing process follows the same general sealing, court lining, and finishing procedures used during the initial installation of the wood floor. The edges and tongue and groove sides of portable wood floors are to be free of overrun that causes the tongue and groove to stick or not fit together properly.
