The UEFA Champions League has its first all-French encounter when Olympique Lyonnais and FC Girondins de Bordeaux square off in the quarter-finals. • Bordeaux broke Lyon's seven-year stranglehold at the top of last season and are now aiming to destroy Les Gones' dream of reaching a first UEFA Champions League semi-final. • There will be cause for confidence in both camps going into this first leg: Lyon are unbeaten at home in the competition this season and defeated Real Madrid CF in the last round, while Bordeaux are the UEFA Champions League's form team with seven successive victories. Previous meetings • The teams have already met in Lyon in Ligue 1 this term, 's 86th-minute header earning Bordeaux a 1-0 victory on 13 December. • Bordeaux won the clubs' first league meeting in Lyon by the same score on 11 February 1952. The pair's overall head-to-head record in the French top flight could hardly be closer: Bordeaux have 32 wins and Lyon 31 with 26 draws. The record between them at the Stade de Gerland is 21 wins for Lyon, 12 for Bordeaux and 12 draws. • Lyon's most emphatic home victory against Bordeaux, a 5-1 win on 15 May 2005, secured a fourth successive league title. Cris and both scored twice. • In the French Cup, Néstor Combin struck twice as Lyon defeated Bordeaux 2-0 in the 1964 final. In 1972/73 Lyon prevailed 4-3 on aggregate (3-0 at home, 1-3 away) in the last 16 en route to winning the trophy again. • Bordeaux have won two of the clubs' three French League Cup meetings, notably in the 2007 final decided by Henrique's 89th-minute header. • Les Marine et Blanc defeated Lyon 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the last 16 of the 2001/02 competition, which they eventually won. That avenged a 1-0 win for Lyon at the same stage in 2000. Match background • Lyon have a strong home record in this season's UEFA Champions League. Including the 5-1 qualifying round win against RSC Anderlecht, they have collected four wins and a draw from five games. The Group E runners-up claimed the scalp of Real Madrid in the first knockout round by prevailing 1-0 at home, then drawing 1-1 in Spain. • Lyon are seeking their first appearance in the last four of the UEFA Champions League having fallen at this hurdle three times previously – in 2003/04, 2004/05 and 2005/06.

• Bordeaux's UEFA Champions League away form has been impressive with three wins and a draw from four games. • Indeed their overall efforts in reaching the quarter-finals have been eye-catching. From the group stage onwards, the French titleholders have won more matches (seven) than any other club and share with FC Barcelona the highest number of clean sheets (five). • This is Bordeaux's first quarter-final in Europe's elite club competition since the 1980s. In 1984/85 they defeated FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk on penalties after a 2-2 aggregate draw to reach their only semi-final, where they suffered an overall 3-2 reverse against eventual champions Juventus. • Les Girondins returned to the last eight in 1987/88, but went out on away goals after a 1-1 aggregate draw against a PSV Eindhoven side who went on to win the trophy. • In the intervening years Bordeaux have contested three UEFA Cup quarter-finals, most recently in 2003/04 when again they lost to the winners that year, Valencia CF. • While this is Bordeaux's first European tie against a compatriot club, Lyon beat Montpellier Hérault SC home (3-2) and away (1-0) in the 1997 UEFA Intertoto Cup final. Team ties • Puel has faced French opposition before in Europe. His previous experience as a coach came with LOSC Lille Métropole in the 2004/05 UEFA Cup when Les Dogues went down 1-0 on aggregate to AJ Auxerre in the round of 16, paying the price for a narrow first-leg home loss. Jean II Makoun and were in Lille's squad alongside Matthieu Chalmé. Another Bordeaux player, Michaël Ciani, featured for the opposition. • Blanc was captain of the Olympique de team that defeated AS Monaco FC in the third round of the 1998/99 UEFA Cup. Puel was then an assistant of Monaco coach Jean Tigana, whom he replaced at the helm soon after. • Puel coached Franck Jurietti at Monaco during 2000/01. • Lyon's Govou, , Anthony Réveillère and Jérémy Toulalan are colleagues of Bordeaux's Cédric Carasso, Ciani, and in the national squad. • Bordeaux captain Diarra spent the 2006/07 season with Lyon, making 15 Ligue 1 appearances and scoring one goal. • Brazilian internationals Cris and Michel Bastos will face countrymen Fernando, Henrique, Jussiê and Wendel. • There is also an Argentinian connection between the squads with Lisandro and César Delgado up against compatriots and Diego Placente. • Ederson and Hugo Lloris were formerly team-mates of David Bellion at OGC Nice, while Kim Källström and Gourcuff played together at Stade Rennais FC. Bodmer and Yoan Gouffran were in the same SM Caen squad in 2002/03, although they never played together. • Bernard Lacombe, Les Gones' presidential adviser and a former French international striker, played for both Lyon (1969-78) and Bordeaux (1979-87). • France coach has also played for both sides. He won the French Cup with hometown club Lyon in 1973 and the French title with Bordeaux in 1984. • The second leg takes place on 7 April. The victors will meet the winner of the quarter-final between FC Bayern München and Manchester United FC in the last four. Match facts

Olympique Lyonnais: Claude Puel Date of birth: 2 September 1961 Nationality: French Playing career: AS Monaco FC Coaching career: AS Monaco FC, LOSC Lille Métropole, Olympique Lyonnais • Olympique Lyonnais coach Claude Puel is no stranger to big European nights, having spent 22 years as player and coach at AS Monaco FC and then led LOSC Lille Métropole into the UEFA Champions League. • Puel amassed 488 league games as Monaco's midfield anchorman, winning two French titles (1982, 1988) and the 1991 French Cup in addition to reaching the 1992 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final and the UEFA Champions League semi-finals two years later. • Puel's coaching philosophy is simple: assemble a team with high fitness levels, stamina and speed in abundance and a miserly defence. Such virtues helped Monaco to the French title in 2000 and earned Lille UEFA Intertoto Cup victory in 2004, three years after Puel had taken charge. • When appointed Lille coach in summer 2001, Puel looked to the long term; his ambitions came to fruition ahead of schedule as he steered his team into Europe's premier club competition achieved with second place in Ligue 1 in 2005 – their best finish for 50 years. • Lille came third in 2006, going on to the UEFA Champions League first knockout round before Puel moved to Lyon in 2008. Although he oversaw the end of a seven-year run of league titles in his first season, Puel did guide Lyon to the UEFA Champions League first knockout round, where they lost to eventual winners FC Barcelona.

FC Girondins de Bordeaux: Laurent Blanc Date of birth: 19 November 1965 Nationality: French Playing career: Montpellier Hérault SC, Napoli SSC, Nîmes Olympique SC, AS Saint-Etienne, AJ Auxerre, FC Barcelona, Olympique de Marseille, FC Internazionale Milano, Manchester United FC Coaching career: FC Girondins de Bordeaux • The defender's 20-year club career saw him win a French Cup with Montpellier in 1990, a 1996 league and cup double with Auxerre, the 1997 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup with Barcelona and a title with United just before retirement in 2003. • Nicknamed 'Le Président' on account of his authority, elegance and leadership. • Famous for 'good-luck' kiss on keeper 's bald head before kick-offs, he won the 1998 FIFA World Cup on home soil after scoring France's Golden Goal winner against Paraguay in the last 16, but missed the Paris final after being sent off in the semis. • Helped France win UEFA EURO 2000, scoring against Denmark in the group stage, before retiring from international football that year with 97 caps and 16 goals. • Spent four years taking coaching qualifications before being appointed Bordeaux coach in June 2007, making an immediate impact. His team finished second in his first season in charge and won a championship and League Cup double in 2009.

UEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know? • Teams have recovered from a first-leg deficit to go through to the next stage on 22 occasions, although only once – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96 semi-finals – has a side gone through after losing the first leg at home. The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals when they fought back from a 4-1 defeat at AC Milan to win 4-0 at home. • Eighteen ties have been decided on the away goals rule, including five where the triumphant team lost the first leg. • FC Bayern München hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugal in the 2008/09 first knockout round, eventually going through 12-1 after a 7-1 home victory in the second leg. • Ten ties have now gone to penalties, including the game between Arsenal FC and AS Roma in the 2008/09 first knockout round. Five of these were finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2008. The first two-legged tie decided on spot-kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win against Olympique Lyonnais on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw. • In all, 17 ties have required extra time. So far seven have been decided by extra time alone: four quarter-finals, two first knockout round encounters and the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC. • The 2008/09 last-16 encounter between Bayern and Sporting featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any previous UEFA Champions League knockout tie, Bayern prevailing 12-1. • There has never been a knockout tie ending goalless after two legs. Nine have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Manchester United FC's narrow victory against FC Barcelona in the 2007/08 semi-finals. • Teams from the same country have contested the final on three previous occasions. Real Madrid CF overcame Valencia CF 3-0 in Paris in 2000. Three years later Milan defeated Juventus 3-2 on penalties after a goalless draw at , and United beat Chelsea, also on spot-kicks, after a 1-1 draw in Moscow in May 2008. • Clarence Seedorf is the only player to win the European Champion Clubs' Cup with three clubs (Ajax 1995, Madrid 1998, Milan 2003, 2007). Liverpool's Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981) is the only coach to win three times. • Ottmar Hitzfeld (BV Borussia Dortmund 1997, Bayern 2001) and Ernst Happel ( 1970, Hamburger SV 1983) are the only coaches to win the trophy with two clubs. • Only five capital cities have been home to teams that have won the European Cup: Madrid (Real Madrid), Belgrade (FK Crvena Zvezda), Bucharest (FC Steaua Bucureşti), Amsterdam (Ajax) and Lisbon (SL Benfica). • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having been aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid CF on Matchday 6 of the 2007/08 competition. • Laurent Blanc is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 36 years and 339 days, in Manchester United's 3-2 defeat of Olympiacos FC on 23 October 2002. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared in the UEFA Champions League. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against Steaua on 23 November 1994. He was then sent off in the 37th minute.
