A Lesson in Humility
A Lesson in Humility There was so much to admire in Spain’s journey to the summi of world football during the 2010 World Cup: Vicente Del Bosque’s wise management, Xavi’s brilliant orchestration of the play, Andrés Iniesta’s incisive running with the ball, David Villa’s prowess in front of goal, and the goalkeeping exploits of Iker Casillas. But for those of us who observed the current World and European champions at close quarters, it was not only their football ability that impressed. Their human qualities, in particular the humility displayed by many of the Spanish players, gained them respect beyond their technical achievements. Was this positive behaviour just a lucky coincidence or was it the result of a culture within the Spanish game? It is easy to see that this successful generation of Spanish footballers are modest, unpretentious and happy to promote a “we” mentality. As Xavi stated during the World Cup: “We are a group of very normal, very hard working people who love the game.” The same can be said of their head coach, Vicente Del Bosque, who has won both the UEFA Champions League and the World Cup with his respectful, patient and unassuming style of management. What is not on public display is the process which has nurtured many of these gifted players, young men who have their feet firmly on the ground. As Fernando Hierro, sports director at the Spanish FA (the RFEF), and Ginés Meléndez, RFEF coaching school director, informed the participants at UEFA’s recent national coaches conference in Madrid, the aim in Spain is to educate talented youngsters to play, to compete and to develop a psychological balance. -
FIFA World Cup 2018
JOSE RAMIREZ BARRETO Published on 17.6.18 Final-minute goals a common feature of almost all games so far A ready but cautious Brazil will begin their 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign against Switzerland on Sunday. Memories of that heart breaking 1-7 loss to Germany cannot have been easy to overcome but it’s something they have to put aside or it will not leave much room for an easy run through the group stage. Their preparations have gone to plan, with the focus more on tactical training as many of the players were coming off tough club seasons. Under coach Tite, the team has seen a turnaround, and what could have been a difficult road to Russia turned out to be a straightforward one. It’s really great to see the way the boys have responded to Tite. They are pushing themselves and working hard, and responsibly, to reach top form. They have carried their qualification form into the warm-ups over the last few weeks, and are displaying the right attitude and desire. And this means that fans are now again excited about their team. The defence of the team has proved to be unquestionable under Tite with a clean sheet in 16 games out of 21 games. From the middle to the front the performance of the new version of the “magic square”, formed by Neymar, Gabriel Jesus, Willian and Philippe Coutinho, has been indisputable. This tactic has been productive for the attack and it is the individual quality of the players that has brought the results. -

Globo Brings Russian Culture to Brazil for World Cup Coverage
Globo Brings Russian Culture to Brazil for World Cup Coverage 06.26.2018 With the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia underway, prominent networks in Latin America-including DirecTV, Globo, ESPN and Fox Sports-are using magic, humor, music and pride to position campaigns around the excitement soccer brings, and the networks' capacity to offer fans the best content anytime, anyplace. Here, Brief digs into Globo's marketing strategy for the World Cup. Brazilian network Globo went with a comedic campaign that delivers some Russian culture to viewers, and uses music as a hook. "At Globo, we are in constant motion, following what happens in Brazil and around the world, and always maintaining a very close relationship with our audience. We focused on emphasizing the joy and excitement of covering the World Cup by connecting Brazil and Russia through a light-hearted and entertaining campaign that uses music-a universal cultural expression-to mix the two cultures," says Leandro Castilho, creative director at Globo. Globo produced special programming to bring a bit of Russia's spirit into Brazil. An example is As Matrioshkas (The Matrioshkas), a program hosted by journalist Glenda Kozlowski, who traveled to Russia along with the mothers of Brazilian players Neymar, Gabriel Jesus and Fernandinho. Globo's studios also have a LED-based stage, which turns guests and members of the audience into figures of a tactical table. The network also worked with traditional Russian musicians and instruments, such as the balalaika and the accordion, to create a new version of the song Coração Verde e Amarelo (Green and Yellow Heart) composed by Tavito and Aldir Blanc. -
